Past Simple часто используется в сочетании с такими указателями времени как yesterday(вчера), last year(в прошлом году), in 2010, last week(на прошлой недели), on Sunday(в воскресенье), at 6 o’clock(в 6 часов), two days ago (два дня (тому) назад) и т.д.

He worked yesterday. I wrote a letter 5 minutes ago.

He was a student. – Was he a student? He worked every day. – Did he work every day? He wrote a letter. – Did he write a letter?

He did not (didn’t) play. He could not (couldn’t) swim. He was not (wasn’t) a student.
