A few passengers relax, watching a movie or listening to the audio channels. Most though have gone to sleep. Travellers in the Club World and First Class cabins are stretched out on their seat beds. In First, many of the passengers have changed into sleeper suits provided by flight attendants snuggled under cosy duvets and now doze away the flight, enabling them to arrive in Hong Kong refreshed and ready to do business. The snores are a testament to the comfort of the beds. In economy passengers have used pillows and blankets to transform their seats into makeshift beds. These seats may lack the creature comforts offered by the fancier seats upfront, but the drooping heads attest that they’re comfortable enough to enable a snooze of a few hours at least. With the workload much reduced, the flight attendants have begun their cycle of rest breaks. They have a demanding job, so they are all happy when their turn comes to rest for several hours. The 747-400 is equipped with a special rest area where flight attendants can take their breaks away from the distractions of the cabin. The optional crew rest area utilizes the unused space in the rear fuselage above the aft lavatories. The rest area is accessed through a doorway near the right rear cabin door. Getting there is like climbing into the jet’s attic. Three winding steps and then a short ladder lead up to this cosy nook. The size of the rest area gives a sense of how much empty space there is between the cabin ceiling and the actual fuselage. Victor Alpha has one of the older rest area designs. On the main deck, the rear lavatories have been moved forward, creating room for four seats secluded from the cabin by a door. Upstairs are eight bunk beds.
