ФЕДЕРАЦИЯ ТАНЦЕВАЛЬНОГО СПОРТА УКРАИНЫ 4 страница

She ate a hearty breakfast (она ела обильный завтрак), and watched a wee Munchkin baby (и наблюдала за крошечным ребенком-Манчкином; wee — крошечный, маленький), who played with Toto and pulled his tail (который играл с Тото и тянул того за хвост) and crowed and laughed in a way that greatly amused Dorothy (гукал и смеялся так, что сильно позабавил Дороти; to crow — кричать кукареку; гукать, издавать радостные звуки /о младенце/; way — путь, дорога; манера поведения). Toto was a fine curiosity to all the people (Тото был настоящей диковиной для всех людей; fine — ясный, хороший /о погоде/; эмоц.-усил. большой, крайний; curiosity — любознательность; диковина, редкость), for they had never seen a dog before (так как до этого они никогда не видели ни одной собаки).

"How far is it to the Emerald City (как далеко /отсюда/ до Изумрудного Города)?" the girl asked.

curl [kq:l], hearty ['hQ:tI], curiosity ["kju(q)rI'OsItI]

When she had tired watching the dancing, Boq led her into the house, where he gave her a room with a pretty bed in it.

The sheets were made of blue cloth, and Dorothy slept soundly in them till morning, with Toto curled up on the blue rug beside her.

She ate a hearty breakfast, and watched a wee Munchkin baby, who played with Toto and pulled his tail and crowed and laughed in a way that greatly amused Dorothy. Toto was a fine curiosity to all the people, for they had never seen a dog before.

"How far is it to the Emerald City?" the girl asked.

"I do not know (я не знаю)," answered Boq gravely (ответил Бок серьезно), "for I have never been there (потому что я никогда там не был). It is better for people to keep away from Oz (людям лучше держаться подальше от /Волшебника/ Оза), unless they have business with him (если только у них нет к нему /особого/ дела). But it is a long way to the Emerald City (но до Изумрудного Города путь долог), and it will take you many days (и он займет у тебя много дней). The country here is rich and pleasant (страна здесь = эта страна богатая и приятная), but you must pass through rough and dangerous places (но тебе придется пройти через дикие и опасные места; rough — грубый; дикий, необитаемый) before you reach the end of your journey (прежде чем ты доберешься до цели своего путешествия; end — конец, край; результат, итог)."

This worried Dorothy a little (это немного обеспокоило Дороти; worry — беспокойство, тревога; to worry — надоедать, докучать; беспокоить, волновать), but she knew that only the Great Oz could help her get to Kansas again (но она знала, что только Великий /Волшебник/ Оз мог помочь ей вернуться /снова/ в Канзас), so she bravely resolved not to turn back (поэтому она смело решила не поворачивать назад).

gravely ['greIvlI], business ['bIznIs], rich [rItS], rough [rAf], dangerous ['deIndZ(q)rqs], bravely [breIvlI], resolve [rI'zOlv]

"I do not know," answered Boq gravely, "for I have never been there. It is better for people to keep away from Oz, unless they have business with him. But it is a long way to the Emerald City, and it will take you many days. The country here is rich and pleasant, but you must pass through rough and dangerous places before you reach the end of your journey." This worried Dorothy a little, but she knew that only the Great Oz could help her get to Kansas again, so she bravely resolved not to turn back.

She bade her friends good-bye (она попрощалась со своими друзьями; to bid good-bye — желать всего хорошего), and again started along the road of yellow brick (и вновь отправилась в путь по дороге из желтого кирпича). When she had gone several miles she thought she would stop to rest (после того как она прошла несколько миль, она подумала, что остановится, чтобы отдохнуть), and so climbed to the top of the fence beside the road and sat down (для чего /она/ взобралась на верх забора = на забор и уселась /на нем/). There was a great cornfield beyond the fence (за оградой /расстилалось/ большое кукурузное поле; cornfield — поле, нива; амер. кукурузное поле), and not far away she saw a Scarecrow placed high on a pole (а неподалеку она увидела Пугало = Страшилу, размещенного = который стоял высоко на шесте; to place — помещать, размещать) to keep the birds from the ripe corn (чтобы отгонять птиц от спелой кукурузы).

Dorothy leaned her chin upon her hand (Дороти оперлась подбородком о руку; to lean — наклонять, нагибать; прислоняться, опираться) and gazed thoughtfully at the Scarecrow (и уставилась задумчиво на Страшилу; to gaze — пристально глядеть; уставиться). Its head was a small sack stuffed with straw (его голова представляла собой небольшой мешок, набитый соломой; stuff — материя; набивка, наполнитель; to stuff — набивать, напихивать), with eyes, nose, and mouth painted on it to represent a face (с нарисованными на нем глазами, носом и ртом, которые представляли /его/ лицо; to represent — быть изображением, представлять; означать, символизировать).

An old, pointed blue hat (cтарая, остроконечная синяя шляпа), that had belonged to some Munchkin (которая /ранее/ принадлежала какому-нибудь Манчкину = кому-то из манчкинов), was perched on his head (возвышалась на его голове; perch — насест, жердочка /для птиц/; to perch — сажать на насест; perched — посаженный, помещенный высоко), and the rest of the figure was a blue suit of clothes (остальным /одеянием/ фигуры был синий мужской костюм; rest — остаток, остальная часть; suit of clothes — мужской костюм), worn and faded (изношенный и выцветший; to wear — носить /одежду/; to fade — выцветать, выгорать на солнце), which had also been stuffed with straw (который также был набит соломой).

climb [klaIm], cornfield ['kO:nfi:ld], scarecrow ['skeqkrqu], thoughtfully ['TO:tfulI], straw [strO:], represent ["reprI'zent], figure ['fIgq], suit [sju:t]

She bade her friends good-bye, and again started along the road of yellow brick. When she had gone several miles she thought she would stop to rest, and so climbed to the top of the fence beside the road and sat down. There was a great cornfield beyond the fence, and not far away she saw a Scarecrow, placed high on a pole to keep the birds from the ripe corn.

Dorothy leaned her chin upon her hand and gazed thoughtfully at the Scarecrow. Its head was a small sack stuffed with straw, with eyes, nose, and mouth painted on it to represent a face.

An old, pointed blue hat, that had belonged to some Munchkin, was perched on his head, and the rest of the figure was a blue suit of clothes, worn and faded, which had also been stuffed with straw.

On the feet were some old boots with blue tops (на /его/ ногах были какие-то старые ботинки с синим верхом), such as every man wore in this country (подобные тем, которые носили все мужчины в этой стране: «какие каждый мужчина носил в этой стране»), and the figure was raised above the stalks of corn by means of the pole stuck up its back (и вся фигура была поднята над стеблями кукурузы посредством шеста, воткнутого вдоль его спины).

While Dorothy was looking earnestly into the queer, painted face of the Scarecrow (пока Дороти серьезно смотрела на странное разукрашенное лицо Страшилы), she was surprised to see one of the eyes slowly wink at her (она удивилась, увидев, что один глаз медленно подмигнул ей; wink — смыкание глаз /для сна/; подмигивание; to wink — мигать, моргать; подмигивать). She thought she must have been mistaken at first (она поначалу подумала, что, должно быть, ошиблась), for none of the scarecrows in Kansas ever wink (потому что ни одно пугало в Канзасе никогда не подмигивало); but presently the figure nodded its head to her in a friendly way (но вскоре фигура дружелюбно кивнула ей головой; nod — кивок; to nod — кивнуть головой). Then she climbed down from the fence and walked up to it (после чего она слезла с забора и подошла к нему), while Toto ran around the pole and barked (а Тото /стал/ бегать вокруг шеста и лаять).

stalk [stO:k], earnestly ['q:nIstlI], queer [kwIq], bark [bQ:k]

On the feet were some old boots with blue tops, such as every man wore in this country, and the figure was raised above the stalks of corn by means of the pole stuck up its back.

While Dorothy was looking earnestly into the queer, painted face of the Scarecrow, she was surprised to see one of the eyes slowly wink at her. She thought she must have been mistaken at first, for none of the scarecrows in Kansas ever wink; but presently the figure nodded its head to her in a friendly way. Then she climbed down from the fence and walked up to it, while Toto ran around the pole and barked.

"Good day (добрый день)," said the Scarecrow, in a rather husky voice (сказал Страшила довольно хриплым голосом; husky — сиплый, хриплый).

"Did you speak (ты /умеешь/ говорить)?" asked the girl, in wonder (спросила девочка в изумлении).

"Certainly (конечно)," answered the Scarecrow. "How do you do (как поживаешь)?"

"I'm pretty well, thank you (довольно хорошо, благодарю)," replied Dorothy politely (вежливо ответила Дороти). "How do you do (а как ты поживаешь)?"

"I'm not feeling well (я не /очень хорошо/ себя чувствую)," said the Scarecrow, with a smile (ответил Страшила с улыбкой), "for it is very tedious being perched up here night and day to scare away crows (потому что очень утомительно быть насаженным на шест = торчать на шесту здесь ночью и днем, чтобы распугивать ворон; perch — жердь, шест, насест; to perch — садиться на насест; взгромоздиться; располагать высоко)."

"Can't you get down (а ты не можешь спуститься)?" asked Dorothy.

husky ['hAskI], certainly ['sq:tnlI], politely [pq'laItlI], tedious ['ti:dIqs], scare [skeq]

"Good day," said the Scarecrow, in a rather husky voice.

"Did you speak?" asked the girl, in wonder.

"Certainly," answered the Scarecrow. "How do you do?"

"I'm pretty well, thank you," replied Dorothy politely."How do you do?"

"I'm not feeling well," said the Scarecrow, with a smile, "for it is very tedious being perched up here night and day to scare away crows."

"Can't you get down?" asked Dorothy.

"No, for this pole is stuck up my back (нет, потому что эта палка воткнута вдоль моей спины). If you will please take away the pole I shall be greatly obliged to you (если ты будешь так любезна и уберешь этот шест, то я буду премного тебе благодарен; if you please — пожалуйста, будьте так добры; to oblige — обязывать; obliged — обязанный; to be obliged to smb. — быть обязанным кому-либо = благодарным)."

Dorothy reached up both arms (Дороти вытянула вверх обе руки) and lifted the figure off the pole (и подняла = сняла фигуру с шеста), for, being stuffed with straw, it was quite light (потому что, будучи набитой соломой, она была довольно легкой).

"Thank you very much (спасибо тебе большое)," said the Scarecrow, when he had been set down on the ground (сказал Страшила, когда он был поставлен на землю). "I feel like a new man (я чувствую себя /так, словно стал/ новым человеком)." Dorothy was puzzled at this (Дороти была озадачена этим; puzzle — вопрос, ставящий в тупик; головоломка, загадка; to puzzle — приводить в затруднение, ставить в тупик), for it sounded queer to hear a stuffed man speak (потому что странно было слышать, как говорит набитый /соломой/ человек; sound — звук, шум; to sound — звучать, издавать звук; звучать, казаться), and to see him bow and walk along beside her (и видеть, как он кланяется и идет рядом с ней).

obliged [q'blaIdZd], puzzle [pAzl], sound [saund]

"No, for this pole is stuck up my back. If you will please take away the pole I shall be greatly obliged to you." Dorothy reached up both arms and lifted the figure off the pole, for, being stuffed with straw, it was quite light.

"Thank you very much," said the Scarecrow, when he had been set down on the ground. "I feel like a new man." Dorothy was puzzled at this, for it sounded queer to hear a stuffed man speak, and to see him bow and walk along beside her.

"Who are you (кто ты)?" asked the Scarecrow when he had stretched himself and yawned (спросил Страшила, после того как он потянулся и зевнул). "And where are you going (и куда ты идешь)?"

"My name is Dorothy (меня зовут Дороти)," said the girl, "and I am going to the Emerald City, to ask the Great Oz to send me back to Kansas (и я иду в Изумрудный Город, попросить Великого /Волшебника/ Оза послать меня обратно = вернуть меня в Канзас)."

"Where is the Emerald City (а где находится Изумрудный Город)?" he inquired. "And who is Oz (и кто такой Оз)?"

"Why, don't you know (как, разве ты не знаешь)?" she returned, in surprise (ответила она удивленно; to return — возвращаться, идти обратно; возражать, отвечать).

"No, indeed (нет, на самом деле /не знаю/). I don't know anything (я ничего не знаю). You see, I am stuffed, so I have no brains at all (видишь ли, я набит /соломой/, поэтому у меня вовсе нет мозгов)," he answered sadly (ответил он печально).

"Oh," said Dorothy, "I'm awfully sorry for you (мне ужасно тебя жаль)."

"Do you think (как ты думаешь)," he asked, "if I go to the Emerald City with you (если я пойду с тобой в Изумрудный Город), that Oz would give me some brains (даст ли мне Оз немного мозгов)?"

yawn [jO:n], return [rI'tq:n], surprise [sq'praIz], brain [breIn], awfully ['O:f(q)lI]

"Who are you?" asked the Scarecrow when he had stretched himself and yawned. "And where are you going?"

"My name is Dorothy," said the girl, "and I am going to the Emerald City, to ask the Great Oz to send me back to Kansas."

"Where is the Emerald City?" he inquired. "And who is Oz?"

"Why, don't you know?" she returned, in surprise.

"No, indeed. I don't know anything. You see, I am stuffed, so I have no brains at all," he answered sadly.

"Oh," said Dorothy, "I'm awfully sorry for you."

"Do you think," he asked, "if I go to the Emerald City with you, that Oz would give me some brains?"

"I cannot tell (не могу сказать = не знаю)," she returned, "but you may come with me, if you like (но ты можешь пойти со мной, если хочешь). If Oz will not give you any brains (если Оз не даст тебе /никаких/ мозгов) you will be no worse off than you are now (тебе /все равно/ будешь не хуже, чем сейчас; to be well off — быть в хорошем положении /например, материально/, быть удачливым, преуспевать; to be badly off — быть в трудном положении, нуждаться)."

"That is true (это правда)," said the Scarecrow. "You see (видишь ли)," he continued confidentially (продолжил он доверительно); "I don't mind my legs and arms and body being stuffed (я не возражаю, /чтобы/ мои ноги и руки, и тело были набиты /соломой/; to mind — возражать, иметь что-либо против), because I cannot get hurt (потому что мне невозможно причинить боль). If anyone treads on my toes (если кто-нибудь наступает мне на пальцы на ногах = на ноги; to tread — идти, ступать, шагать; наступать, давить; toe — палец на ноге) or sticks a pin into me (или втыкает в меня булавку), it doesn't matter, for I can't feel it (это не имеет значения = мне все равно, потому что я этого не чувствую: «не могу этого почувствовать»).

But I do not want people to call me a fool (но я не хочу, чтобы люди называли меня дураком; to call — кричать, окликать; называть, считать), and if my head stays stuffed with straw instead of with brains, as yours is (а если моя голова останется набитой соломой вместо мозгов, как у тебя: «как /набита/ твоя /голова/»), how am I ever to know anything (как же мне узнать хоть что-нибудь)?"

worse [wq:s], confidentially ["kOnfI'denS(q)lI], hurt [hq:t], toe [tqu], instead [In'sted]

"I cannot tell," she returned, "but you may come with me, if you like. If Oz will not give you any brains you will be no worse off than you are now."

"That is true," said the Scarecrow. "You see," he continued confidentially, "I don't mind my legs and arms and body being stuffed, because I cannot get hurt. If anyone treads on my toes or sticks a pin into me, it doesn't matter, for I can't feel it.

But I do not want people to call me a fool, and if my head stays stuffed with straw instead of with brains, as yours is, how am I ever to know anything?"

"I understand how you feel (я понимаю, что ты чувствуешь)," said the little girl, who was truly sorry for him (сказала маленькая девочка, которой было действительно жалко его). "If you will come with me I'll ask Oz to do all he can for you (если ты пойдешь со мной, я попрошу Оза сделать для тебя все, что он сможет)."

"Thank you (спасибо)," he answered gratefully (ответил он с благодарностью).

They walked back to the road (они пошли назад к дороге). Dorothy helped him over the fence (Дороти помогла ему /перелезть/ через забор), and they started along the path of yellow brick for the Emerald City (и они двинулись по дороге из желтого кирпича в Изумрудный Город).

Toto did not like this addition to the party at first (Тото сначала не понравилось это прибавление к /их/ компании).

He smelled around the stuffed man (он обнюхал набитого /соломой/ человека со всех сторон; to smell — чувствовать запах, чуять; нюхать; around — вокруг) as if he suspected there might be a nest of rats in the straw (словно подозревал, что в соломе может находиться выводок крыс; nest — гнездо; выводок, рой), and he often growled in an unfriendly way at the Scarecrow (и он часто недружелюбно рычал на Страшилу).

sorry ['sOrI], gratefully ['greItfulI], addition [q'dIS(q)n], suspect [sq'spekt], growl [graul], unfriendly [An'frendlI]

"I understand how you feel," said the little girl, who was truly sorry for him. "If you will come with me I'll ask Oz to do all he can for you."

"Thank you," he answered gratefully.

They walked back to the road. Dorothy helped him over the fence, and they started along the path of yellow brick for the Emerald City.

Toto did not like this addition to the party at first.

He smelled around the stuffed man as if he suspected there might be a nest of rats in the straw, and he often growled in an unfriendly way at the Scarecrow.

"Don't mind Toto (не обращай внимания на Тото)," said Dorothy to her new friend (сказала Дороти своему новому другу). "He never bites (он никогда = вовсе не кусается)".

"Oh, I'm not afraid (о, я не боюсь)," replied the Scarecrow. "He can't hurt the straw (он не может причинить вреда соломе). Do let me carry that basket for you (позволь мне понести ту корзину для тебя). I shall not mind it, for I can't get tired (я вовсе не против, потому что я не могу устать). I'll tell you a secret (я расскажу тебе один секрет)," he continued, as he walked along (продолжил он, пока шел). "There is only one thing in the world I am afraid of (в мире есть только одна вещь, которую я боюсь)."

"What is that (и что это)?" asked Dorothy; "the Munchkin farmer who made you (фермер-Манчкин, который тебя сделал)?"

"No," answered the Scarecrow; "it's a lighted match (это зажженная спичка; to light — зажигать)."

friend [frend], bite [baIt], secret ['si:krIt], match [mxtS]

"Don't mind Toto," said Dorothy to her new friend.

"He never bites."

"Oh, I'm not afraid," replied the Scarecrow. "He can't hurt the straw. Do let me carry that basket for you. I shall not mind it, for I can't get tired. I'll tell you a secret," he continued, as he walked along. "There is only one thing in the world I am afraid of."

"What is that?" asked Dorothy; "the Munchkin farmer who made you?"

"No," answered the Scarecrow; "it's a lighted match."

4. The Road Through the Forest (Дорога через лес)

After a few hours the road began to be rough (спустя несколько часов дорога начала становиться ухабистой; rough — грубый; неровный; ухабистый /о дороге/), and the walking grew so difficult that the Scarecrow often stumbled over the yellow bricks (и ходьба становилась такой трудной = и идти становилось так трудно, что Страшила часто спотыкался о желтые кирпичи), which were here very uneven (которые были здесь очень неровными). Sometimes, indeed, they were broken or missing altogether (иногда, на самом деле, они были разбиты или вовсе отсутствовали; to miss — промахнуться; недоставать; missing — недостающий, отсутствующий, пропавший), leaving holes that Toto jumped across and Dorothy walked around (оставляя /после себя такие/ ямы, через которые Тото перепрыгивал, а Дороти обходила вокруг). As for the Scarecrow, having no brains, he walked straight ahead (что же касается Страшилы, то, так как у него не было мозгов: «не имея мозгов», он шел прямо вперед), and so stepped into the holes and fell at full length on the hard bricks (и поэтому наступал прямо в эти ямы и падал во весь рост на жесткие кирпичи; to step — шагать, ступать; length — длина; one's length — чей-либо рост; to fall all one's length — растянуться во весь рост). It never hurt him, however (это, однако, никогда = вовсе /не/ вредило ему), and Dorothy would pick him up and set him upon his feet again (и Дороти поднимала его и снова ставила его на ноги), while he joined her in laughing merrily at his own mishap (и они вместе весело смеялись над его /собственной/ неудачей: «в то время как он присоединялся к ней в том, что смеялся весело…»; to join — соединять, объединять; присоединяться /принять участие в чем-либо/).

stumble [stAmbl], uneven [An'i:v(q)n], jump [dZAmp], straight [streIt], length [leNT], merrily ['merIlI], mishap ['mIshxp]

After a few hours the road began to be rough, and the walking grew so difficult that the Scarecrow often stumbled over the yellow bricks, which were here very uneven. Sometimes, indeed, they were broken or missing altogether, leaving holes that Toto jumped across and Dorothy walked around. As for the Scarecrow, having no brains, he walked straight ahead, and so stepped into the holes and fell at full length on the hard bricks. It never hurt him, however, and Dorothy would pick him up and set him upon his feet again, while he joined her in laughing merrily at his own mishap.

The farms were not nearly so well cared for here as they were farther back (фермы = поля /здесь/ вовсе не были так хорошо возделаны, как те, что /остались/ далеко позади; not nearly — совсем не, далеко не; to care for — заботиться /о ком-либо, о чем-либо/, ухаживать). There were fewer houses and fewer fruit trees (/здесь/ было меньше домов и меньше фруктовых деревьев), and the farther they went the more dismal and lonesome the country became (и, чем дальше они шли, тем более мрачной и пустынной становилась страна; lonesome — одинокий; малолюдный, пустынный).

At noon they sat down by the roadside, near a little brook (в полдень они присели на обочине, около маленького ручья), and Dorothy opened her basket and got out some bread (и Дороти открыла свою корзину и достала немного хлеба). She offered a piece to the Scarecrow, but he refused (она предложила кусочек Страшиле, но тот отказался).

care [keq], dismal ['dIzmql], lonesome ['lqunsqm], roadside ['rqudsaId], refuse [rI'fju:z]

The farms were not nearly so well cared for here as they were farther back. There were fewer houses and fewer fruit trees, and the farther they went the more dismal and lonesome the country became.

At noon they sat down by the roadside, near a little brook, and Dorothy opened her basket and got out some bread. She offered a piece to the Scarecrow, but he refused.

"I am never hungry (я никогда /не/ голоден)," he said, "and it is a lucky thing I am not (удачная вещь = и это удачно, что я не /голоден/), for my mouth is only painted (так как мой рот только нарисован), and if I should cut a hole in it so I could eat (и если я прорежу в нем дырку, чтобы я смог есть), the straw I am stuffed with would come out (то солома, которой я набит, вывалится наружу), and that would spoil the shape of my head (а это испортит форму моей головы)."

Dorothy saw at once that this was true (Дороти сразу же увидела, что это было правдой), so she only nodded and went on eating her bread (поэтому она только кивнула головой и продолжила есть хлеб; to go on — продолжать путь; продолжать /делать что-либо/).

lucky ['lAkI], painted ['peIntId], spoil [spOIl], bread [bred]

"I am never hungry," he said, "and it is a lucky thing I am not, for my mouth is only painted, and if I should cut a hole in it so I could eat, the straw I am stuffed with would come out, and that would spoil the shape of my head." Dorothy saw at once that this was true, so she only nodded and went on eating her bread.

"Tell me something about yourself and the country you came from (расскажи мне что-нибудь о себе и о той стране, откуда ты прибыла)," said the Scarecrow, when she had finished her dinner (сказал Страшила, когда она закончила свой обед). So she told him all about Kansas (поэтому она рассказала ему все о Канзасе), and how gray everything was there (и о том, каким серым там все было), and how the cyclone had carried her to this queer Land of Oz (и о том, как ураган принес ее в эту странную Страну Оз).

The Scarecrow listened carefully, and said (Страшила выслушал внимательно и сказал), "I cannot understand why you should wish to leave this beautiful country (я не могу понять, почему ты желаешь покинуть эту прекрасную страну) and go back to the dry, gray place you call Kansas (и вернуться в то засушливое серое место, которое ты называешь Канзасом; dry — сухой, обезвоженный; засушливый /о месте, климате/)."

"That is because you have no brains (это потому, что у тебя нет мозгов)," answered the girl.

listen ['lIs(q)n], understand ["Andq'stxnd], dry [draI], because [bI'kOz]

"Tell me something about yourself and the country you came from," said the Scarecrow, when she had finished her dinner. So she told him all about Kansas, and how gray everything was there, and how the cyclone had carried her to this queer Land of Oz.

The Scarecrow listened carefully, and said, "I cannot understand why you should wish to leave this beautiful country and go back to the dry, gray place you call Kansas."

"That is because you have no brains," answered the girl.

"No matter how dreary and gray our homes are (неважно, насколько унылы и серы наши дома; dreary — мрачный, безотрадный), we people of flesh and blood would rather live there than in any other country (мы, люди из плоти и крови, будем лучше жить там, чем в любой другой стране; flesh — плоть), be it ever so beautiful (какой бы красивой она ни была). There is no place like home (нет места, подобного /родному/ дому = в гостях хорошо, а дома лучше)."

The Scarecrow sighed (Страшила вздохнул).

"Of course I cannot understand it (конечно же, я не могу этого понять)," he said. "If your heads were stuffed with straw, like mine (если бы ваши головы были набиты соломой, как у меня: «как моя /голова/»), you would probably all live in the beautiful places (вы, возможно, все бы жили в прекрасных местах), and then Kansas would have no people at all (и тогда в Канзасе вовсе бы не осталось людей). It is fortunate for Kansas that you have brains (Канзасу повезло, что у вас есть мозги; fortune — счастье, фортуна; удача, успех; fortunate — счастливый, удачный; благоприятный)."

"Won't you tell me a story, while we are resting (а ты не расскажешь мне какую-нибудь историю, пока мы отдыхаем)?" asked the child.

The Scarecrow looked at her reproachfully, and answered (Страшила взглянул на нее укоризненно и ответил; reproach — упрек, попрек; to reproach — попрекать, укорять): "My life has been so short that I really know nothing whatever (моя жизнь такая короткая, что я действительно ничего не знаю; whatever — какой бы ни; любой; какой бы то ни было, любой; /в отрицательных предложениях и с отрицательным смыслом/ никакой, совсем не, вообще не: nothing whatever — абсолютно ничего)."
