It can’t protect traffic that has left the Tor network, for example, where traffic becomes vulnerable to all the usual attacks. The solution to this is end-to-end encryption – preventing monitoring or tampering not only for Tor users but for everyone else on the internet too. Another potential weakness is flaws in other software used with Tor. The FBI distributed malware to every visitor to a group of hidden services, some of which claimed to distribute child abuse images. The malware exploited a vulnerability in the Firefox web browser in order to send the real IP address of the user and other identifying information back to the FBI. It’s been suggested that a flaw in the software behind the Silk Road gave the FBI the breakthrough that let them discover the IP address and so the real location of the Silk Road’s servers. But the lack of detail on this from the FBI, compared to the other evidence gleaned from Ulbricht’s server and laptop computer, has led some to ask whether the FBI used techniques it doesn’t want openly discussed – such as the involvement of the National Security Agency and its vast surveillance infrastructure. It could also have been what’s called a traffic confirmation attack, where the entry and exit Tor nodes are compromised or monitored. Our own research has shown that this can allow communications to be de-anonymised, and researchers including myself are working on how to address this – by making it difficult or unlikely for any one person to control the entry and exit nodes, and by reducing the potential damage if this occurs. The internet has come a long way since its beginnings, and simplifications and rationalisations made for good reasons at the time need to be re-visited in light of what’s been learned in the 40 years since. Conflating addressing and identity is one of these decisions. Tor – useful in its own right – also indicates how the internet’s architecture should provide strong assurance of identity when needed, and strong privacy when not. Given enough resources, attackers will be able to de-anonymise at least some of Tor’s users, some of the time, but it’s still the best web privacy solution we have today. New IS female militia manifesto advises girls to remain sedentary after marrying at 9 (Business Standard) A manifesto published by an all-female subgroup of the Islamic State (IS) has reportedly affirmed that girls can get married by the age of nine, should be hitched by age 16 or 17 and should lead "sedentary lives" as mothers. The manifesto, produced by IS' female militia Al-Khanssaa Brigade, stated that it is always preferable for a woman to stay hidden, veiled and to maintain society from behind the veil, reported New York Post. It also advised Muslim women to stay away from beauty salons and fashion boutiques and affirmed that matters of "adventure and excitement," themes that are most used by Western recruiters trying to recruit young women to IS, are the "realm of men." The document said in its conclusion, "Just as they have sexed up what it is to be a woman living in the so-called caliphate, this document dresses it down. Women, it is unambiguously stated, are homemakers and mothers." The guidelines were published on a jihadist forum last month and translated into English by the London-based Quilliam Foundation, a counterterror think tank. It said that the manifesto was aimed at providing a "more accurate description of how Muslim women are expected to behave" in the Islamic Caliphate, as opposed to accounts by Western female jihadists. The group has captured large parts of Iraq and Syria and declared an Islamic Caliphate in the areas under its control. Nigeria: 'More PDP Govs to Decamp Before Polls' (The Guardian) Tagged: Ilorin — FORMER Acting Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and now an All Progressives Congress (APC) chieftain, Abubakar Baraje, has said that more PDP governors would defect to his new party before the presidential polls, adding that even where they decide to remain, their souls and structures were already with the APC. Baraje, who spoke in Ilorin during his 64th birthday anniversary, stressed that the outcome of the presidential election in Nigeria must be masses-friendly to boost the nation's growing democracy. According to him, the Nigerian masses truly deserve a change, as the PDP has misruled the country. Nevertheless, he said the APC would no doubt accept in good faith the outcome of the polls "if it is free, fair and credible." However, he asked: "Even if we have free, fair and credible elections and the PDP wins, are the Nigerian masses ready to accept it? Are they ready to go for another four years of injustice and poverty?" On his part, Governor Abdulfatah Ahmed of Kwara State yesterday defended the boycott of the presidential debates by the APC candidate, Maj.-Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (rtd), saying that debates are not the key issues in electoral matters but interactive sessions with electorates. "Debate is not the key thing, as far as I am concerned. It is the interaction with people, where there would be questions and answers," he said. "Debate is good but you may not have the opportunity of asking the questions that are specific and getting the right answer, unlike during interactive session. "I intend to hold (interactive sessions) too as soon we finish campaign, where we meet with stakeholders - labour unions, students, market women, artisans - discuss with them, get their pulse and create the platform of change in the right direction." Addressing party supporters in Oke Ero council, Ahmed alleged that the Federal Government was starving states and councils of funds, therefore most of them could not embark on projects after paying salaries, with councils the hardest hit. He lamented that people were being killed daily in North-eastern Nigeria, claiming that soldiers were now retreating because they were not well equipped. Ahmed said: "We need a brave and courageous man to address the worsening insecurity, a man who would effectively manage our economy and stop the corruption being perpetrated at the centre." Urging Kwarans to vote for Buhari for his integrity, truthfulness and for fair play and progress, he noted that Kwara massively voted for Jonathan in 2011 but has nothing to show for it. Of the Peoples Democratic Party's (PDP) move to wrest power and liberate the state from the APC, Ahmed responded: "I don't know how they want to liberate us, they are the ones that require liberation. The whole activities today are hanging towards change. I want to assure you that as it is, APC is going to win the election with a landslide."
