The cornerstone of a strong AML compliance program is the adoption and implementation of comprehensive CDD policies, procedures, and processes for all customers, particularly those that present a higher risk for money laundering and terrorist financing.
Customer Due Diligence measures ensure that businesses know who their clients are, so that they do not accept clients outside of their normal risk tolerance, or whose business they do not fully understand.
These processes assist the bank in determining when transactions are potentially suspicious. The concept of CDD begins with verifying the customer’s identity and assessing the risks associated with that customer.

For customers that are legal persons, the financial institution should be required to take reasonable measures to understand the ownership and control structure of the customer; determine who are the natural persons that ultimately own or control the customer. Financial institutions should conduct ongoing due diligence on the business relationship. It should include scrutiny of transactions undertaken throughout the course of that relationship to ensure that the transactions being conducted are consistent with the institution‘s knowledge of the customer, their business and risk profile, and where necessary, the source of funds.
