Sound Practice

A. Listen to the fable. Transcribe the words containing the phonemes you have learnt. Practise their reading.

D. Listen to the fable, concentrate on the words containing the letter O; group the words in accordance with the sounds it represents in speech. Explain the reading rules in writing. Give qualitative and quantitative changes of some phonemes when used in unstressed positions.

E. Listen to the sentences, write them down, lay stresses and tone marks, transcribe the sentences, define the cases of reduction in them. Do it in writing.

a) One day a dog ran into a stable and jumped into the manger.

b) The manger had some hay in it.

c) If I can’t eat it, then I shall not let you eat it either!

d) You don’t eat hay, so you don’t need it.

 

Intonation Practice

A. Register the compound and complex sentences in the fable; write them down; concentrate your attention on the division of the speech flow into smaller passages (syntagms or intonation groups); mark the nuclear tones in each intonation group. In writing give your explanation of such sequences of tones. Listen to the fable and lay stress-and-tone marks. Give tonograms.

a) When the horse and cow wanted to eat their hay, the dog would not let them.

b) Because I don’t like to see you eat what I can’t eat too.

c) Do not stop others having what you don’t need.

B. Listen to the following sentences, write them down, divide them into syntagms, lay stresses and tone marks, give the number of rhythmic groups in each syntagm. Concentrate on the intonation of author’s words. Analyse it in writing.

a) “You don’t eat hay, so you don’t need it,” said the cow.

b) “We want the hay. It is ours. It is our dinner,” said the horse.

c) But the dog said, “If I can’t eat it, then I shall not let you eat it either!”

d) “Why?” asked the cow.

e) “Why?” asked the horse.

f) “Because I don’t like to see you eat what I can’t eat too,” said the dog. “Go away!”

C. Find the sentenses pronounced with the following intonation patterns:

a) Nuclear Tone + Tail

b) High Level Head + Nuclear Tone

c) Low Prehead + High Level Head + Nuclear Tone

d) Low Prehead + High Level Head + Nuclear Tone + Tail.

D. Record the fable imitating the speaker’s intonation.

Comprehension Practice

A. Listen to the fable. Write downyour answers to the following questions revealing the plot of the fable.

a) Where did a dog run into one day?

b) What did the dog do?

c) What was there in the manger?

d) Could the horse and cow eat their hay?

e) Why did the horse and cow want to it the hay?

f) What did the dog say when the horse and cow wanted to eat their hay?

g) Why didn’t the dog let the horse and cow eat the hay?

B. Listen to the text, divide it into communicative blocks, entitle them.

C. Listen to the fable, find the logical centre of each communicative block and of the whole text. Write them down.

D. Listen to the jumbled sentences and put them in the right order to complete the fable.

a) “Why?” asked the cow.

b) “Go away!”

c) “We want the hay.

d) So the horse and the cow had to go away hungry.

e) It is our dinner,” said the horse

Written Practice

A. Comment on the use of definite and indefinite articles in the fable.

B. Listen to the fable once again; write it down. Complete the fable adding your own moral. Explain your choice. Now listen to the moral of the fable, compare it with yours. Describe the differences, if any.

C. Find in the fable the reason why the horse and cow could not eat their dinner.

D. Comment on the moral describing selfishness. Express your attitude towards selfish people. Do it in writing.

F. Write down your own story, which proves the moral of the fable.
