The one of the possiblevariant of METAR weather information indication at the terminal of air traffic controllers is given in Fig.1.

1.1. Aviation Selected Special Weather Report (SPECI)

 

A SPECI is coded the same way as a METAR, but it is issued when the following criteria are found:

 

1. Mean surface wind direction has changed by 60 degrees or more as compared with that reported in the last METAR and/or after the change being 5MPS (10 KT) or more.

2. Mean surface wind speed has changed by 5MPS (10KT) or more as compared with that reported in the last METAR.

3. Wind gusts have increased by 5 MPS (10 KT) or more as compared to the last one reported in METAR and wind speed afer the change being 7 MPS (15 KT) or more.

4. Wind variations exceed values important for flight operation and it is necessary:

a) to change runways in use;

b) to indicate that the runway tailwind and crosswind components have changed through values representing the main operating limits for typical aircraft operating at the aerodrome;

5. Visibility changes to or passes

- 600, 800 or 1500 m (3000) (When RVR is given it is not required to issue SPECI)

- 5000 when significant numbers of VFR (visual flight rules) flights are operating.

 

6. RVR changes to or passes 150, 350, 800, 600, 800 m.

 

7. When any combination of weather in the significant weather table (appendix 1) begins, ends or changes intensity.

 

 

8. Height of the base of the lowest cloud layer of more than 4 octs changes to or passes:

 

a) 60, 150 or 300m (100, 200, 500 or 1000ft);

b) 450m (1500ft) when a great number of VFR flights are operating.

9. When the amount of cloud below 450m (1500ft) changes from:

a) SKC, FEW, SCT to BKN or OVC;

b) BKN or OVC to SCT, FEW, SKC.

 

10. When the sky is obscured and vertical visibility changes to or passes 30, 60, 150 or 300m (100, 200, 500 or 1000ft).

 

A selected special repor representing deterioration in conditions should be disseminated immediately after the observation. A selected special repor representing an improvement in conditions should be disseminated only after the improvement has been maintained for 10 minutes.

 

2. Terminal Aerodrome Forecast (TAF )

 

TAF is a detailed forecast of expected weather elements at an aerodrome that affect the air traffic significantly.

 

A TAF has the following basic format:

Content and interpreting groups constituting the TAF code is given in Table 3.

Terminal Aerodrome Forecasts are composed not less than 1 hour in advance of their beginning. The validity period of TAF is 9 or 18 hours. The 9 hour period forecasts are issued every 3 hours. The 18 hour period forecasts are issued every 6 hours.
