T. 5 Eavesdropping

You will overhear a couple having an argument. Which of these sentences do you think are true?

a The woman hasn’t been sleeping well.

b The man has found a job.

c The woman hasn’t been working very hard.

d The man has been sitting around doing nothing.

e They haven’t been getting on well for some time.

A I don’t think you can blame me just because you’ve been sleeping badly. It’s hardly my fault, is it?

B I didn’t blame you, I didn’t, I never blamed you, I just said I’m, I think I’ll go to bed early because I’ve not, you know, I didn’t sleep very well.

A Yeah OK but you seem to imply that just because I’m not working that somehow I’m just you know sitting around doing nothing.

B I just said I was going to bed early because I was very tired. I slept very badly last night, I’m tired, I’ve got a busy, you know, busy day ahead of me.

A Oh, oh and I haven’t (Well) Because I’m just going to be sitting around watching television and twiddling my thumbs.

B I didn’t say that, did I? Look I’m sorry you haven’t get enough to do. I’m sorry that you’re bored.

A I’ve got planty to do, thank you very much. I’ve been looking for five different jobs.

You will overhear bits of three more conversations. What are the conversations about? Imagine what the people have (or haven’t) been doing.

1 A We’ve just got to do something. I mean she came home again after midnight last night.

B I know, she hasn’t looked at a book for weeks. She’s never going to pass her exams at this rate.

2 A I bet you’ll be glad to see them go, won’t you?

B Yeah, it’s exhausting, I mean it’s nice to see them because they live so far away, but, well it is hard work.

3 A He’s a different. He used to be so shy and quiet.

B I know, it really is incredible. I think he’s changed since his divorce, don’t you?

T.6

I set off at six. It was still dark when I put my suitcase in the car and drove off. I had a good journey through London because it was Saturday so there was no rush hour traffic.

Soon I was on the M20 motorway heading towards Folkestone on the south coast. I stopped at a service station for a cup of coffee and a sandwich. I didn’t buy any petrol because it’s much cheaper in France.

I arrived in Folkestone at 8.10. The problem with travelling by car from England to France is that Britain is an island. There are 35 kilometers of water between England and France. You can get across it by ferry, but there’s a much better and quicker way-the Channel Tunnel!

The Channel Tunnel’s only a train tunnel, not a road tunnel and so you have to put your car on a train. The journey takes an hour and a half, and drivers have to sit in their cars because there are no seats on the train for passengers. I arrived at the terminal and joined the queue of cars waiting for the next train.

At 10.30 the train arrived in Calais and drove my car off the train and onto the road- a French road. I had to remember to drive on the right, not on the left!

The traffic in Calais was quite bad. Finally I got out of Calais and onto the motorway to the South of France. The speed limit on French motorways is 130 kilometers an hour and the road was clear so now I could travel quickly. But first I stopped at a service station to fill up with petrol.

Petrol’s cheaper in France than in Britain but on the other hand you have to pay to travel on French motorways. In Britain they’re free.

It’s 960 kilometers from Calais to Avingnon, and the journey on the motorway was boring. I listened to my favorite music to pass the time and stopped again for lunch.

At eight o’clock I finally arrived in Avingnon. I found my hotel and I was looking my hotel and I was looking forward to a lovely French meal.

1. Listen to four friends chatting about their favorite books and films. Tick the titles they mention in exercise.

2. Listen to the dialogue and answer the questions.

-What do they say about books? Whatdid they say about” Captain Corelli’s Mandolin"?

Discuss with your group, then with the class.

V = Vinnie, W = Will, S = Sue, M = Maeve,

V Hey, I just read a great book.

W A book? Hey Vinnie, we’re impressed! What was it?

V The Philosopher’s Stone

M Isn’t that a Harry Potter book?

V Well, yeah, yeah, but …. No, no, come on you guys, - really. it was terrific. I was so amazed. JK Rowling’s a really good writer. Lots of adults read her books, they’re not just for kids.

W Sure, Vinnie. You believe that, if you want.

S No, come on, he’s right. I mean, I’ve seen people reading Harry Potter on the Underground and I’ve seen the video – my nephew has it – it’s excellent!

M Actually, I’ve just bought Captain Corelli’s Mandolin on DVD. Has anyone read that book?

it was great. I could not read it.

W You have to skip the first hundred pages and after that it’s great.

V Hey guys! Call me old- fashioned but I like to begin a book at the beginning.

W but is it a great story, though-‘specially when it, you know, moves to him and the girl on the Greek island.

M Year, it’s fantastic love story. But so sad! Actually, I read it on holiday, on a beach on a Greek island – would you believe- and I just cried and cried. People kept asking me if I was OK!

V Hey, didn’t Nick Cage star in the film?

W Year, with Penelope Cruz… she is just so lovely…

M Er well right so… what is your favorite book then Sue?

S Oh… well… my all time best is… right, you’ll never believe this… it’s Drakula!

M Drakula? You’re kidding!

S No- no, I’m not. I know everybody’s heard of Dracula and seen Drakula films, but I bet not many people have read the book. It’s by a man called Bram Stoker and it’s by a man called Bram Stoker and it’s brilliant.

W Year – there are loads of Dracula films. Er, I saw one not long ago actually, with – er – Tom Cruise.

V Yeah, yeah, I love horror movies – the scarier the better!

M Well, actually I think Frankenstein’s a much better horror movie. You feel really sorry for that poor monster.

S: Well, it is good but not that good. I mean that’s my opinion of course.

V: Dracula is more scary… with huge teeth that he sinks into the necks of beautiful woman.

M: Aaagh! That is disgusting!

S: OK Vinney. OK. What else do you read?- I mean other than Harry Potter that is?

V: Hey-come on, come on! I had to read Ernest Hemingway at school and I quite enjoyed it…oh… what was it called? Oh yeah, yeah, The Sun also sets.

W: Rises.- The Sun also rises.

Journalist What subjects did you take?

Charlotte Physics, chemistry, maths, and biology.

Journalist Do you think you’ve passed?

Charlotte I’m sure I’ve passed, but I’m worried about what grades I’ll get.

Journalist Why?

Charlotte Because I want to study medicine at university – at Cambridge, and they won’t give me a place unless I get three As and B.

Journalist Do you think you’ll get them?

Charlotte I don’t know them. I think I did OK, but I’m a bit worried about maths.

Journalist When will you get your results?

Charlotte Tomorrow, by post. I’m really nervous – and so are my parents! As soon as the post comes, I’ll take the letter upstairs and open it.

Journalist And how will you celebrate if you pass?

Charlotte I don’t want to plan any celebrations, until I get the results.

Journalist And what will you do if you don’t get the grades you need?

Charlotte I don’t want to think about it. If I don’t get into Cambridge, my parents will kill me. No, I’m joking. I suppose I’ll do another year at school and take the exams again.

Journalist Well good luck!

Charlotte Thanks.

Charlotte No, my mum and dad have been really nice – they know how disappointed I am.

Journalist Well, Victor did you pass your FCE exam?

Victor yes, I passed – and I got a B. I’m very pleased. I didn’t think I’d get a B. I thought I’d get a C.

Voice over Week one

Jessica when I got to the studio on the first day, I was really nervous. I met my teachers, Adam and Sally, they were very nice to me but I could see that that they thought it was going to be impossible to teach me to be a reporter in just in a month.

Adam The problem with Jessica at the beginning was that she was too shy and too nice. Political reporters need to be hard-almost aggressive sometimes – and I’ve never met anyone less aggressive than Jessica. And also she knew nothing about politics – she knew who the Prime Minister was but not much else!

Jessica I spend the first week watching lots of political interviews on TV, and Adam and Sally taught me how to speak more clearly and more confidently. In the evenings they made me read the political sections of all the newspapers. It was boring. At the end of the week I was exhausted.

5.15 Voice – over Week two

Jessica Adam and Sally said I had to change my image for TV, so I had my hair cut and colored, and I got new, smarter clothes. I must say I liked my new look. I spend the week learning how to interview someone in front of a camera.

Adam Then came Jessica’s first big challenge. The Prime Minister was arriving home after a visit to the USA. She had to wait outside number 10 Downing Street with the other journalists and try to ask him a question

Jessica It was a disaster. I was so nervous I was shaking. There were a lot of other journalists pushing and shouting. They didn’t let me get near the Prime Minister. I tried to ask my question but he didn’t hear me. I felt really stupid.

5.16 Voice – over Week three

Adam Jessica was finally making some progress. She was more relaxed. This week she had to interview a politician from the Conservative party in the studio.

Jessica In the beginning it was fine. But then I made a stupid mistake.

Jessica So could you tell us what the Labour party are going to do about…Sorry, I mean the Conservative party I said the ‘Labour party’ instead of the ‘Conservative party’. And after that I was really nervous again.

Adam We all make mistakes sometimes. Jessica just has to learn to carry on, and not lose her confidence.

5.17 Voice – over Week four

Jessica I spend the last week preparing for the test. It was going to be live interview with the minister of education. There would be three professional reporters and me, all asking him questions. I’d done lots of research so although I was nervous, I felt well prepared.

Jessica Minister, many people think that the real reason why there aren’t enough teachers is because their salaries are so low. Are you proposing to increase teachers’ salaries?

Minister Well, let’s not forget that salaries are much higher today than they were under the previous government.

Jessica Yes, you haven’t answered my question. Are you going to increase them?

Minister There are no immediate plans to increase teachers’ salaries.

Jessica So it’s a no then. Thank you, Minister.

Jessica When it was all over came the worst part. I had to wait while the judges decided which of us they thought wasn’t a professional reporter.

Adam The judges gave their verdict – and incredible none of the three realized that Jessica wasn’t a professional! She did very very well. Who knows maybe one day soon you’ll be seeing her on TV…and this time she’ll be a real reporter, not pretending!

Jessica It was a great experience and I was pleased how I did, but actually I wouldn’t like to change jobs. I’m much happier working in the library.

T 12 [1, 4.19]

A Good morning. I’m Mrs Connors …Sean Connors mother.

B Oh hello. Nice to meet you. Please, sit down.

A So, what’s the problem with Sean? He is a lazy so and so, isn’t he?

B Yes, but that isn’t what I wanted to talk to you about.

A Did he fail his math exam again?

B Yes.

A What mark did he get?

B He got 90%.

A But that’s good, isn’t it?

B It would be excellent, except that he copied all the answers from the girl sitting in front of him. That’s what we need to talk about.

A That Sean! Just wait till I get home.

2.

A Do you see the woman over there? She used to go to my school.

B Which one? The tall one with long dark hair?

A No, the one next to her with short, blonde hair. What was her name? Janet. That’s right. She is changed a lot. She is really slim now. She used to be quit fat. But it’s definitely her.

3.

A So what have you decided about these three houses?

B Well, we both loved the cottage…but not the price.

A And the detached house?

B That would be ideal…

A But…?

B The kitchen’s tiny.

A And the terraced house.

B Could we see that one again?

A Certainly.

B How about tomorrow morning?

4.

A And our next caller is…

B Dennis.

A Go ahead, Dennis. We’re listening.

B Thank you. I used to go to a secondary school in North London and I am trying to find an old friend of mine, called Eddie. We lost touch with each other after we left school.

A And when was that, Dennis?

B Let me think. I started there when I was eleven, so that’s 19/71 and I left school six, no, seven years later.

A So if you are listening Eddie, your old friend Dennis wants to make contact with you. If you hear this message, you can call the show or send us an email. The phone number is…

5.

A Hi, this is Sophie.

B Oh hi, Sophie. Haven’t heard from you for ages.

A Sorry. I’ve just been so busy.

B Me too. We never have time to see each other these days.

A That’s why I’m calling. What about lunch next week?

B Great! What day?

A Monday?

B Can’t. I’ve got a business lunch. Tuesday?

A I’ve got my yoga class at 1.00. Best day for me would be Thursday.

B Let me see. I’ve got a meeting at 12.30, but I should be finished by 2.00 at the latest. How about a late lunch?

A Fine. I’ll come to you and meet you in the coffee bar downstairs.

B Perfect. I’ll see you then.

A Bye!
