TRAVELING

Task 1. Read the text and write out unknown words

TRAVELLING

Millions of people all over the world spend their holidays traveling. They travel to see other countries and continents, modem cities and the ruins of ancient towns, they travel to enjoy picturesque places, or just for a change of scene. It is always interesting to discover new things, different ways of life, to meet different people, to try different food, to listen to different musical rhythms.

Those who live in the country like to go to a big city and spend their time visiting museums and art galleries, looking at shop windows and dining at exotic restaurants. City-dwellers usually like a quiet holiday by the sea or in the mountains, with nothing to do but walk and bathe and laze inthe sum.

Most travelers and holiday-makers take a camera with them and take pictures of everything that interests them - the sights of a city, old churches and castles, views of mountains, lakes, valleys, plains, waterfalls, forests; different kinds of trees, flowers and plants, animals and birds.

Later, perhaps years later, they will be reminded by the photos of the happy time they have had.

People travel by train, by plane, by boat and by car.

All means of travel have their advantages and disadvantages. And people choose one according to their plans and destinations.

If we are fond of traveling, we see and learn a lot of things that we can never see or learn at home, though we may read about them in books and newspapers, and see pictures of them on TV, The best way to study geography is to travel, and the best way to get to know and understand the people is to meet them in their own town.

ADVICES TO TRAVELLERS ABROAD

Modern life is impossible without traveling. Some people travel to see other countries and continents, modern cities and ruins of ancient towns, some on business, some in search of health. Many people travel "for pleasure", because they are fond sightseeing, they want to meet new friends, to take photographs of themselves in picturesque places. It is always interesting to discover new things, different ways of life, to enjoy exotic food, to listen to different musical rhythms.

Travel is the name of a modern disease which started in the mid-fifties and is still spreading. Nowadays traveling abroad is very popular.

And before you go abroad:

> Learn about the places you plan to visit. Familiarize yourself with local laws and customs in those areas. (Consult your library, a travel agent, airline, or the tourist bureaus of the specific countries you plan to visit). Keep track as well of what is being reported in the media about any recent developments.

> Don't take anything you would hate to lose. Leave at home all unnecessary credit cards, expensive jewelry, or irreplaceable family objects.

> Pack an extra set of eyeglasses. Carry these and any medicines you need in your carry-on luggage. Take along a copy of the prescription for necessary medicines and the generic name of the drug.

> Lock you luggage and put your name and address inside each piece.

> Leave a copy of your route with family or friends at home should they need to contact you in an emergency.

> Normal common sense should prevail when traveling abroad, just as it would at home. Be especially cautious in, or avoid situations where you are more likely to be victimized such as crowded subways, train stations, market places, festivals.

> Find out about local rules and obey them.

GOING THROUGH THE PASSPORT AND CUSTOMS CONTROL

When you leave Ukraine, you will be asked to present the customs declaration. Foreigners may not leave the country with hryvna or hard currency in excess of the amount declared on arrival. Ukrainian citizens may not leave the country with more than $1,000 and 85 hryvnas. Artwork can be good value in Ukraine. Prices are much lower than in the West. The government prohibits the export of art or antiques produced before 1945. In order to export works of fine art produced after 1945 you need to obtain a license from the Culture Department of the Kyiv City. When you arrive in Great Britain by plane you first go through the passport control. A clerk gives you an arrival card and you fill it in: you write your full name, address, the purpose of your visit to Britain and the town where you will stay. Then you come up to the immigration officer who stands at a counter. You give him your arrival card and your passport. After studying your photo and visa the immigration officer may ask you about the purpose of your visit, how long you are going to stay in Britain and some other questions. If your passport is in order he gives it back to you and you go to collect your luggage. After that you are to go through the customs in the next room. If you only have things, which are duty free, you may go through the green gate and the customs officer will let you go outside. If you have some things to declare you go through die red gate where the customs officer may ask you to open your suitcase and examine your luggage. If you have things liable to duty you'll have to pay for them. Only after that die customs officer will mark your things and let you go.
