And so it went — with mutinous men, wild dogs, and a trail that broke the heart. He fought the men to stay with him, fought the dogs to keep them away from the eggs, fought the ice, the cold, and the pain of his foot, which would not heal. As fast as the young tissue renewed, it was bitten and seared by the frost, so that a running sore developed, into which he could almost shove his fist. In the mornings, when he first put his weight upon it, his head went dizzy, and he was near to fainting from the pain; but later on in the day it usually grew numb, to recommence when he crawled into his blankets and tried to sleep. Yet he, who had been a clerk and sat at a desk all his days, toiled till the Indians were exhausted, and even outworked the dogs. How hard he worked, how much he suffered, he did not know.
Being a man of the one idea (он был человеком одной идеи), now that the idea had come (и теперь, когда эта идея пришла /ему в голову/), it mastered him (она овладела им; to master — овладевать; руководить, управлять). In the foreground of his consciousness was Dawson (центральное место в его сознании был = занимал Доусон; foreground — самое важное место, центральная позиция), in the background his thousand dozen eggs (на втором плане /была/ его тысяча дюжин яиц), and midway between the two his ego fluttered (а посредине между ними двумя трепыхалось его «эго» /его «я»/), striving always to draw them together to a glittering golden point (все время стараясь свести их в одной сверкающей золотой точке). This golden point was the five thousand dollars (золотой точкой были пять тысяч долларов), the consummation of the idea and the point of departure for whatever new idea might present itself (воплощение идеи и исходная точка для того, что бы ни представляла любая новая идея = для любой новой идеи). For the rest, he was a mere automaton (в остальном же он был не более, чем автомат/полным автоматом; mere — не более чем, всего лишь; абсолютный, полный). He was unaware of other things (он не замечал остального), seeing them as through a glass darkly (видя его = все словно в тумане через стекло; darkly — в темноте; тускло; смутно, неясно), and giving them no thought (и не придавая ему = ничему внимания; thought — забота; внимание). The work of his hands he did with machine-like wisdom (ручную работу он выполнял с разумностью машины = с автоматизмом машины); likewise the work of his head (равно как и умственную работу). So the look on his face grew very tense (таким образом, выражение его лица стало очень напряженным), till even the Indians were afraid of it (пока даже индейцы не стали бояться его /этого выражения лица/), and marvelled at the strange white man who had made them slaves (и не удивлялись странному белому человеку, который сделал их рабами) and forced them to toil with such foolishness (и заставлял их с такой безрассудностью трудиться сверх меры).
