1. Explain the meanings of the following combinations of words a) as free word combinations and b) as phraseological units (Бабич Г.Н. Lexicology: A Current Guide = Лексикология английского языка. – М.: Флинта Наука, 2009. – С. 108, #6).
2. Using various dictionaries, compare the grammatical valency of the following words: worth and worthy; observance and observation; affect and effect, moral and morale, respectfully and respectively, policy and politics, conscience, conscious, consciousness and conscientious.
3. Here are some English words. Give words of the same root in Russian. Compare their valency: situation, surprise, chance, partner, risk, challenge, satisfaction, business.
4. From the lexemes in brackets choose the correct one to go with each of the synonyms given below: acute, keen, sharp (knife, mind, sight); abysmal, deep, profound (ignorance, river, sleep), diminutive, miniature, petite, petty, small, tiny (camera, house, speck, spite, suffix, woman); brisk, nimble, quick, swift (mind, revenge, train, walk).
5. State the type of transference on which the meaning of the given phraseological units is based: dance to someone's tune; daylight robbery; in the doghouse; go to pieces; have goose pimples; tell a white lie; keep a stiff upper lip; live in clover; a pen pusher; pick someone's brains; poker face; save your breath; Shank's pony; shop till you drop; slap on the wrist.
6. Classify the italicized phraseological units into: 1) phraseological fusions; 2) phraseological unities; 3) phraseological combinations. Contexts will help you to understand the meaning of phraseological units. In case of difficulty consult a dictionary (Бабич Г.Н. Lexicology: A Current Guide = Лексикология английского языка. – М.: Флинта Наука, 2009. – С. 109-110, #10a).
7. Here are some phrases which include the adjective green. Which of them are idiomatic? Consider their Russian equivalents in terms of degrees of idiomaticity: green fingers /thumbs; green light; green room; green with envy; green belt; to be green; green around the gills; green grass; green stuff; he green-eyed monster; of the green color; the rub of the green.
