Task I. Before watching the film, make sure you know the following words and word combinations:

B. While watching.

Task II. State whether the following sentences are true or false. Make the false expressions sound true:

1. The modern approach to motivating employees is based on the idea that employees are just company’s assets or resources.

2. According to Maslow’s theory, human behavior is affected by unsatisfied needs.

3. According to Hertzberg, working conditions, salary, company policies and job security are the most important factors that motivate people to work harder.

4. Fortunately, there is one way to motivate people.

5. Managers usually have to take four steps to motivate their staff:

a) they need to establish a set of principles that will guide employees;

b) they need to create an environment that is conducive to motivation of employees;

c) they need to appraise their workers after they have performed any task;

d) they must communicate efficiently with their staff.

6. It is not so vital for most people to be committed, to be involved, to feel they are accomplishing something important.

7. Generally, workers should feel a certain degree of independence and at the same time feel they are a part of a team.

8. There are three theories connected with managers’ assumptions – theories X, Y and Z:

a) theory X states that people are hard-working and responsible;

b) theory Y states that people are lazy, they don’t have a desire to grow;

c) theory Z states that if we want to change something in people and their attitude to their jobs we should first change something in the whole organization, its structure and overall policies.

9. A good manager cannot do a lot to motivate people. He / she can just create an environment in which he / she will motivate his / her employees.

10.Managers have to motivate public sector employees a little bit differently than private sector employees. They have to give them a raise at Christmas time and all other perks.

 

Task III. Divide the following factors into two groups: a) maintenance factors; b) motivators:

working conditions, achievement, responsibility, salary, company policies, recognition, interesting work, job security, advancement

 

Task IV. Basing on the film, choose critical ingredients necessary to build motivation:

high salary, good work environment, fringe benefits, clear personal philosophy, planning, goal-setting, leadership, strategic decisions, measurement, effective communication

 

Task V. Translate the sentences into Russian:

1. A personal philosophy, an environment where motivation can flourish are two of the factors necessary to build motivation. The third critical ingredient is communication.

2. Through more positive direct communications employees not only become aware that their manager is accessible to them – they get reinforcement, approval and praise.

3. Any constructive feedback can provide a strong foundation for motivation of employees.

4. As we see, motivation is not something that can simply be obtained by “Dangling a carrot in front of the rabbit’s nose”. Creating motivation of workers involves many different factors that vary from manager to manager and from organization to organization.

5. By giving the worker an opportunity to contribute, to solve problems the company is effectively saying that he or she is important.

6. There are lots of various reasons why people pursue a career and the biggest mistake that the manager can make is to assume that everyone basically wants the same thing.

7. Motivation problems, however, are not limited to large private sector companies. They affect the public sector as well.

8. To maintain high motivation among a large body of sophisticated and well-educated employees requires a team of managers who are well trained, who understand the complexity of business and are sensitive to the needs of employees.

9. Of course, the role of management is extremely vital in creating an atmosphere of high motivation and maintaining it at all levels of the organization.

10. The manager can take some time to send memos out, awarding the performance, sending copies of those memos to other people in the managerial chain, and all this helps the employee to know that he / she is meeting the manager’s expectations and he will continue to do so.

 

C. Follow-up activities.

Task VI. What would motivate you in a job? Put the following list in your order of preference:

- a boss you respect and admire

- money

- some fringe benefits you can get

- your colleagues’ respect

- work conditions

- a feeling of personal growth

- a chance to be promoted

- a desire to contribute to your company

- self-esteem

- public recognition

 

Task VII. Give a brief summary of the film using this plan:

a) traditional approach to motivation;

b) Abraham Maslow’s theory of motivation;

c) Frederick Hertzberg’s motivation theory;

d) three important factors in motivation;

e) theories X, Y, Z and their characteristics;

f) motivation in private and public sectors.
