The University of Manchester with over 35,000 students studying and more than 10,000 staff is the largest single-site University in the United Kingdom. The University of Manchester counts more than 20 Nobel laureates among its current and former alumni, faculty, and researchers, including physicist Niels Bohr, economist Arthur Lewis, and chemist John Polyani. The university, with roots tracing back to 1824, formally merged with UMIST (founded in 1851 as Owens College) in 2004. The merger presented a unique opportunity to rethink the very idea of a modern university and formulate a blueprint for the future. The University of Manchester is intent on becoming one of the top research universities of the world.


It receives more applications from prospective students than any other university in the country. The school offers degrees in some 75 undergraduate and 60 postgraduate programmes, including accounting and finance, law, medicine, physics, and astronomy. A postgraduate degree at the University of Manchester is an excellent route to better career prospects. Postgraduate studies are becoming more and more popular; 25% of all final year students now consider staying on at University (UK Graduates Career Survey 2005).

The academic year at The University of Manchester runs from September to June. It is divided into of two semesters of teaching, with vacations at Christmas and Easter.

The academic structure of the University of Manchester is made up of Faculties and Schools. There are four Faculties, each of which is divided into a number of Schools:

· Faculty of Medical and Human Sciences

· Faculty of Engineering and Physical Sciences

· Faculty of Humanities

· Faculty of Life Sciences (unusually consisting of a single school).

The university has established a number of prestigious interdisciplinary research institutes in addition to existing specialist research centres and groups: Aerospace Research Institute, Biomedical Imaging Institute, Dalton Nuclear Research Institute and others.

The University provides a range of services which support its main activities of teaching and research. These include academic support services such as library and computing facilities, student support services and administrative services.

The administration of The University of Manchester is provided by a number of central administrative directorates (Estate, Finance, Human Recourses, Planning and Academic Services, Sports, Trading and Residential Services) and divisions (Communications, International Development, IT Services, Development and Alumni, and others) reporting to the Registrar and Secretary. The Registrar and Secretary is Head of the Administration and reports to the President of the University.

The President and Vice-Chancellor is the chief executive officer of the University under the delegated authority of the Board of Governors. The President and Vice-Chancellor is responsible for the effective and efficient management of the University, for the conduct of its business generally and for the achievement of institutional objectives.

The UK’s top rated Career Service provides information advice and guidance service to current students and staff of The University of Manchester and recent graduates (within three years). It allows to research career options, find out about employers, look for work experience and much more. Employers have rated Careers Service as the best in the UK for the past five consecutive years and rank The University of Manchester as the 5th most preferred university in the world from which to recruit.

The University Language Center provides a wide range of courses and services to students, stuff and members of the public. It offers courses in some 18 languages for personal, professional and academic purposes at various levels. The University Language Center is also in charge of the multimedia language learning facilities which serve all of the students.

The University's library, the John Rylands University Library, is one of the largest academic libraries in the country. It holds more than four million separate items, including some of the greatest printed books and manuscripts. It also has the largest collection of electronic recourses of any in the UK.

IT Services is organised in line with the devolved administrative model for the University supporting the Faculties, Schools, research institutes and central administration. Their mission is to create integrated, responsive, client-centric IT services for The University of Manchester.

Sport, Trading, Accommodation and Residential Services (STARS) is responsible for the running and upkeep of student residences, the provision of student catering, the marketing, sale and operation of conferences and events at the university, and all aspects of sport. There are many different clubs and societies operating within the University of Manchester. Common areas include sports, hobbies, politics and religion. Today the University has more than 80 health and fitness classes.

The University has the UK’s largest alumni community and is in contact with more than 212,000 of its former students spread across 200 countries. Many of the graduates hold positions of seniority in business, academia, politics, industry and the media.

The University of Manchester cultural assets offer a range of outstanding attractions with something for everyone (The Manchester Museum, The Whitworth Art Gallery, The University's Contact Theatre).
