Roles 1,2 You are Southern girls (see pp. 51-52). You are proud of being Southerners and want to become real ladies. You have a strong sense of regional identity and think that the South is superior to other US regions. See also pp. 49-50 and 44-45.

Roles 3,4. You come from New England (see p.53).You are typical Yankees with a strong sense of cultural and social superiority. You believe that your region has always been at the helm of progress. See also pp. 43-44.

Roles 5,6. You are Middle Westerners, typical prosperous farmers (see p. 54). You consider the Middle West the American heartland and believe that the Middle West is the most “American” of all regions. See also p.46.

Roles 7,8. You are from California (see p. 55). You think that California is not just a state, but a state of mind, and consider yourselves quintessential Americans. You believe that California is a dreamland and are happy to enjoy your wealthy and free lifestyle here.

The participants of the role play try to persuade each other in the superiority of their home regions.

Америка – это обширная страна. Хотя распространение единой американской культуры способствовало процессу «американизации» всей нации, в стране можно выделить четыре основных региона. Северо-восток всегда стоял во главе экономического и социального прогресса в США. Он превосходит другие регионы в культурной и экономической сферах, хотя в последнее время его доминирование постепенно сокращается.

Юг – это процветающая территория США, сохранившая почтение к своему прошлому. Тем не менее, многие южане соперничают с северянами (выступают против них), а их поражение в Гражданской войне до сих пор вызывает чувство горечи и обиды. Южане больше других обращают внимание на социальный статус.

Запад считается «законодателем мод» в сфере постиндустриального развития. Непрекращающаяся враждебность жителей Запада к Вашингтону и восточным регионам, к сожалению, также является печальной (огорчительной) особенностью данной части страны. Средний Запад – процветающий сельскохозяйственный регион, где разумная политика по налоговым льготам помогает фермерам сохранять и приумножать свои доходы.

Несмотря на региональные различия, привычка американцев менять место жительства оказала значительное влияние на смешение региональных культур.
