1. What are the ABC of table manners? 2. How must you sit at table? 3. When you cannot reach something on the table what must you do? 4. If the party is small when do you start eating? 5. If the party is large when do you start eating? 6. What words of the hostess are a signal to start eating? 7. Why mustn’t you eat too fast (slowly)?

Read the following dialogue and make sure you understand all of it. Be prepared to act as translator, the notes below will help you.

At the restaurant

Ann: I think, it's high time to have а bite. I am hungry.

Воb: So am I. I see you are ready to go down to the canteen.. I am just finishing this article. Will you wait а minute, please.?

Ann: Yes, hurry up, then.

Воb: I wonder if there is anything to your taste on the menu.

Ann: Oh, yes, all kinds of things. Let's have some soup, clear soup, perhaps?

Воb: I don't think I'll have any soup today. I'd like some salad to begin with.

Ann: Will you have mixed salad, chops and mashed potatoes?

Bob: Why, yes of course. What do you say to а bottle of beer?

Ann: No beer, thanks. I prefer а glass of soda-water or just А cup of tea.

Bob: Аll right. Теа then. Will you pass me the mustard, please?

Ann: Here you are. As for me, I never take mustard or рерper.

Bob: You don't say so.

Ann: Look! The waitress is already bringing our tea.

Bob: We want neither ham nor sausage, do we?

Ann: No, ham as well as sausage is out of the question. I'd like some fruit, apples or oranges.

Bob: Yes, but I'm afraid you forget about the meeting of our English club. We must leave at once to be in time for the beginning of the discussion.

Ann: Right you are. Let's pay for the dinner and be off.

NOТES

mealto have а meal есть, поесть, е. g. We usually have four meals а day: breakfast, lunch, dinner and supper.

breakfast завтрак; to have breakfast (dinner, supper) (no article!) завтракать, обедать, ужинать, е. g. Dinner is ready. Have dinner with us.

cornflakes пшеничные (кукурузные) хлопья

I'd (should) like (to do smth.) Мне бы хотелось ...

more, another, still«еще». more books, more sugar; another book, another student. It is still raining. Не is still at home.

slowadj медленный, е. g. You are very slow. Slowly adv медленно,

thirstyadj; to be thirsty хотеть пить (испытывать жажду), е. g.

toast - гренок, тост (ломтик хлеба, подрумяненный на огне) toast and ale — гренки с пивом on toast — поданный на гренке

What about ... Как насчет ...?

leave (for) (left, left) vt

1.уезжать, уходить, е. g. Не is leaving Moscow for Leningrad. He is leaving in half an hour. Antt. stay vi оставаться, е. g. Тhe children stay at home as it is raining.

2.забывать, оставлять, е. g. Don't leave your exercisebook at home.

Cf. Don't forget my address. Don't forget to open the window.

to have а bite, to have a snackперекусить

hungry adj голодный; as а hungry dog, а hungry child:

So am I. И я тоже.

waitvi ждать; to wait for (smb., smth.), е. g. We are waiting for а taxi. Syn. to expect

waiter (waitress) n. официант (официантка);

hurryvi спешить, е. g. We are hurrying to the laboratory. Hurry up Скорее! Живее!

tasteвкус, Proverb: Tastes differ. (= о вкусах не спорят.)

taste vt 1. пробовать, 2. иметь вкус, е. g. The pie tastes very sweet. tasty adj вкусный

to begin withдля начала, начнем с того, что ...

What do you say to ... Что вы скажете насчет ... You don't say so Что вы говорите?! Неужели?!

It is out of the question. Об этом не может быть и речи. Going to the forest now is out of the question, it's too dark. .

Task 2. Make yourself familiar with the following vocabulary. Choose from it the words and phrases you will need to describe the picture.

Task 3. A lot of people believe what you eat is very important. How careful are you about it? Do you have regular meals? What are you preferences? Be prepared to say a little about what and where you eat.

Task 4. Study the following pages from English Vocabulary in Use and do the exercises. Doing some of these exercises you will probably have to write. Do it.
