The third Toronto International Choral Festival brought to Toronto the highest quality of amateur and professional choirs from four continents, all the regions of Canada and a special focus on the culturally diverse choral talent in Ontario and the Greater Toronto Area. The Festival's Education Outreach Program directly connected these marvelous choirs with students across the Greater Toronto Area by way of workshops, open rehearsals, performances and Internet communication.

The choral talent, which converged on Toronto for a three-week period in June of 2002, presented a special opportunity to share the experience, and sense of community for young people in the G.T.A. The Joy of Singing 2002 provided an Education Outreach Program geared for both elementary and secondary students. The education program was designed to strengthen the emerging children and youth choir movement-already with strong roots in the Toronto area. More importantly, it presented an opportunity to share with young minds the potential that exists beyond and within our borders. It is a rare event that brings such a wealth of talent to one place for a short duration and allows others to benefit on a scale that will last a lifetime.

The Education Outreach Program will provide means through which students can experience the core components of music education: listening, creating, and performing, using the resources of the Joy of Singing 2002 Festival. To the greatest extent possible, choirs will still be available to students through website/electronic communication, and study guides.

The most striking feature of the library and information scene in the UK in the past decade has been the widespread penetration on information technology. Computer-based systems and services, sophisticated microcomputers, new media for storing and transmitting text and data, and enhanced telecommunications facilities are increasingly used. The effects are seen in the development of computerised catalogues, integrated library management systems, (for stock and circulation control, budgeting, acquisition, and interlibrary loan administration), computer-based co-operation systems, and the use of online databases, word processing, electronic publishing, electronic mail and facsimile transmission. In particular, the widespread availability of personal computers and of relatively cheap information-handling software has made it possible for even the smallest libraries to take advantage of computer-based techniques. The growing acceptance of information technology in libraries has changed the way in which they operate, giving greater emphasis to professional activities, and less to clerical operations.

Danish Library Centre for Integration

DLCI is a national resource centre for all Danish public libraries, supporting their service to ethnic and linguistic minorities. The support includes:

  • Collections of books and other media (music, videos, audiobooks, language courses) for lending through the local public libraries.
  • Promotion of public library services to linguistic minorities on a national level.
  • Advice and information on multilingual library services: acquisition, cataloguing, selection of newspapers and periodicals etc.
  • Joint acquisition- and cataloguing programme for all libraries.

All Danish public libraries should provide library services to ethnic and linguistic minorities - adults as well as children. This service should include materials in the mother tongue - to support the maintaining of their language and contact to their original culture.

The collection includes 134,000 items. Nearly 50 languages are represented. Collections are maintained in 30 languages.

The largest languages are in Albanian, Arabic, Bosnian/Croatian/Serbian, Kurdish, Persian, Polish, Tamil, Turkish, Urdu and Vietnamese.

The collections consist primarily of books. The large collections also include music on CD's and cassettes and audiobooks. In Arabic, Bosnian/Croatian/Serbian, Hindi, Persian, Tamil, Turkish and Urdu video and DVD-film collections are also available.

Selection of the items reflects the overall aim of this service – to help users keep contact to their original language and culture and include:

  • National literature, modern and classic.
  • Books reflecting the current trends in society and culture.
  • Books for children to stimulate language ability and strengthen the knowledge of the culture of origin.

DLCI is not open to the general public. All lending is through the public libraries.

The collections are registered in the Danish national union catalogue: www.bibliotek.dk.

Some of the catalogues are bilingual, i.e. in the Arabic catalogues the bibliographical records are in both romanized form and in Arabic.
