The Belarusian education system

Pre-school education is not compulsory in Belarus but around 70% of children do attend nursery or kindergarten before they start school.

School education is divided into three levels: primary (4 years), basic (9 years) and secondary (11 years). A child can be admitted to school at 6 or 7 years of age. The academic year begins on the 1st of September and lasts till the end of May. It is divided into 4 terms and has 4 vocation periods: autumn, winter, spring and summer ones. There are two official languages within the education system in Belarus: Russian and Belarusian.

Basic education is compulsory for all children. At the end of basic education, a Certificate of Basic Education is awarded. Ninth grade graduates have three possibilities: 1) Third stage of school education (10-11th grades(=high school)); 2) Vocational/technical establishments; 3) Technicums. Vocational and technical education is provided by schools where students acquire professional and vocational skills together with general secondary education.

General secondary education is provided by general secondary schools, gymnasiums and lyceums. Gymnasiums provide general secondary education at a higher level. Lyceums provide vocationally-oriented education. As a rule, lyceums use the teachers and educational facilities of universities and research institutes. The new curriculum includes 17 teaching courses. The maximum study load is 40 class hours per week in senior school stages. School-leavers are given a Certificate of Secondary Education.

Completion of a high school or professional certificate allows students to apply to continue their education at the university level. Belarus has one of the highest student-to-population ratios in Europe. The higher education system in Belarus is seen as prestigious due to its high quality and affordability.

Higher education institutions(=HEIs) can be either private or state operated:

Education in public HEIs is free of charge for students who passed the entrance competition. In private HEIs, all students pay tuition fees. Most courses run(=last) for 5 years (in all fields except in Medicine-6 years course of study) and students can choose to study full time, at evening classes or by correspondence. Grants are available for full-time students and scholarships are awarded to very gifted students.

There are four main types of higher education establishments to choose from

1. classical university

2. profile university or academy

3. institute

4. higher college

Higher education is under the supervision of the Ministry of Education, which is responsible for the accreditation and licensing of HEIs and developing and applying the State Educational Standards.
