I am 17 years old, slim and have curly, black hair and brown eyes. I’m serious by nature but all my friends say that I have great sense of humor. I enjoy going out with my friends and I like sports. I’ve always been interested in sports but my real passion is basketball. I don’t know whether I’m a typical American or not. I like fast food but I never say “Hi, man!” isn’t that what people think of the Americans do? I intend to go to Australia one day. I find its culture fascinating. I’m looking forward to having a penfriend there. I live with my mother and two brothers in a small town. My mother works in an office. The most interesting school subject for me is Geography. 2. A famous person profile. (b) Claudia Schiffer is a very successful German model. She has appeared on the covers and fashion pages of all the major fashion magazines and is one of the faces of Chanel. Claudia, now in her forties, is a very beautiful woman. She has a slim figure and is tall with very long legs. Her most stunning feature, though, is her attractive heart-shaped face with her sparkling blue eyes and straight nose. At the moment she has shoulder-length blond hair but its style and color are often changed to suit each modeling assignment. Not only is Claudia a professional model, but she is also a very successful businesswoman. She has her own fitness video and is a partner in the chain of “Fashion Cafes”. She is also very generous, spending a lot of her time working with various charity organizations helping children in need. Claudia is sociable too and likes being with famous people. When Claudia is not modelling or doing charity work, she likes reading and watching old films. By the way, Schiffer has appeared in a number of films and music videos. She also enjoys going to parties, but she rarely stays out late – she has three children. Although Claudia’s popularity as a model is pretty high, Claudia is so beautiful, talented and most of all intelligent that she will be famous for a long time to come.
3. A letter of information sample. (a) Dear Paula, Oh, how I missed being with you during the holidays this year! Everything in London is so different from Spain that I don't know if I'll ever get used to living here. I'm so glad that my father's job at the Spanish Embassy will only last until June. Then we will come home, and you and I can spend the summer on the beach. (I hope you'll spend your holiday in Spain, as usual.) I've already made some very nice friends, but don't worry - no one could ever replace you as my best friend! After school, I sometimes go to my friend Fiona's house. She enjoys listening to the same music and watching the same clips that you and I like. In fact, Fiona and I have tickets for Bon Jovi's concert next month. I wish you were coming with us! Life is very different here. Would you believe that we have to wear a uniform to go to school? It's awful! A blue skirt and a blazer, a white blouse and a ridiculous checked tie, not to mention a pair of horrible, long, white socks. Besides, there is nothing to do in the evening. All the shops close by 4.30 p. m. and pubs are only open till 11 p. m. That's all for now. I must start my homework for my English class tomorrow. 4. A letter of information sample. (b) 5 November 2008 Dear Sarah How has your holiday been so far? Mine has been going great! Now that I am back in Vietnam, I am enjoying every minute of it. Now I am in my hometown, forty kilometers away from Hanoi. Do you remember Leila, my cousin? She is getting married tomorrow, can you believe it? Time passes so fast! That is why I came back to my hometown; I am excited to help her arrange everything. Leila's home, where I am staying now, is on a farmland. It is very much different from my home in Hanoi. The countryside is so much more peaceful; cars and their annoying horns are rarely seen. There are a lot of wide spaces for teenagers to hang out, unlike in the city; I even got to fly a kite! Tomorrow is the big day, and all of us are going to be very busy. Everybody, except for Leila, has to get up at cock-crow to prepare some traditional food for the wedding. I am going to hit the kitchen too. I don't know how to cook, but I will try to learn something simple; and hopefully I will not break anything. In the afternoon, I will help Leila get dressed and put on makeup, before she goes out and greets her family and relatives who come and visit her house. The party takes place in the evening, at a local hotel. I promised Leila that I would help in the reception, so I guess I will wear my traditional "ao dai" like her, too. The wedding is going to be really memorable. I will be leaving for my home the day after tomorrow, and I will fly back to Singapore next week.
