Brief Description of Technology
The Technocenter «LT», together with a number of Russia’s leading Oncology Centers, is presently developing a pilot model for the examination of human tissue through optic fiber. The given device provides pre- and post-operative methods for the diagnosis and prognosis of oncological breast pathologies and their treatment. The diagnostic methods in use today are of varying diagnostic efficiency and have a number of other shortcomings (e.g., need for biopsy, radiation influence, lengthy analysis etc.).
Our device differs from its known analogues in its high diagnostic efficiency (75 - 95%), the possibility to make a diagnosis according to morphologic classifications and to forecast treatment results, the possibility to define patient-individual sensitivity to chemical preparations and speed of examination (3 - 10 minutes). Tissue is probed by laser through a disposable needle with a built-in fiber. The device has already been tested at the Novosibirsk Oncology Dispensary, where 50 patients suffering from breast cancer were examined.
Legal Aspects
The applications to receive a Russian patent have been handed in (priority # 96114745 from August 6, 1996). The necessary documentation needed in order to receive an official permit for clinic trials and device certification is under preparation.
Special Facilities in Use and Their Specifications
Light sources, optic probe compatible with Æ 1,4 mm «Johnson & Johnson» catheter, computer with corresponding software.
