Expressing wishes and regrets s To wish can be used as a simple verb: I wish you a Happy New Year. s wish + could or past simple/ continuous is used to talk about something you would like to be different, but can’t change. I wish I could speak Italian fluently! s wish + past perfect is used to express past regrets I wish I had attended that conference. s wish + would is used to express annoyance at the habits of others. I wish you wouldn’t take my car!
