Teaching and learning philosophy and methodology
Classes are student-centred and process-based where the instructor creates a learning environment that facilitates skill enhancement. Students drive the process by establishing specific learning outcome goals, independently developing and choosing learning strategies, and evaluating their peers’ and their own progress.
Learner-centred instruction will encourage students to take responsibility for their own language skill development and help them to gain confidence in their ability to speak and use English in different speaking situations. Teachers should support students by encouraging them to bring the content from students’ fields of study into the classroom with the idea of teaching the students how to learn through the use of learning strategies. This should be done through daily group discussions, frequent presentations, in-depth research using library and on-line resources, debates and critical analysis of arguments. Chosen content and tasks should be integrated to promote the students’ desired learning objectives. The classes will be speaking-intensive, although reading and writing and listening and note-taking will be required as a language flows from one medium to another as a whole.
