THE KOMI REPUBLIC
The Komi Republic is situated in the Northeast of Europe. The territory of the republic is rather large. It is more than 415 thousand square kms. And its population is more than 1 million people. Our Republic is famous for its forests. Almost all the territory of the republic is covered with woods and only some places are fields and meadows. The country’s nature is very original and unique. The woods are rich in animals and birds. In summer they are full of berries and mushrooms. There are some high places in our Republic. They are the Urals, stretching from the north to the south, the Timan stretching from the south-east to the north-west. There are many beautiful lakes with green, wooden and grassy shores and great powerful woods all around. The biggest rivers of the Republic are the Vychegda, the Sysola, and the Pechora. They all flow to the north of our country. Their banks attract people by considerable variety, from the picturesque fir-trees to the grassy hills and to the vast swamps. The Komi Republic is rich in mineral resources. There are great deposits of gas, oil and coal. Main gas deposits are located near Ukhta and Vuktyl. Our gas is sent to many parts of our country and abroad. But the real treasure is oil. The rich oil fields are located in the north of our republic. The chief coal fields are in Vorkuta, Pechora, and Inta. Our Republic has a highly developed industry. In the central part of our republic and in Vorkuta limestone and brick earth are produced. They play an important role in the economy of our republic as are widely used in building. Our timber is sent to many countries of the world. It is produced in numerous timber enterprises by the forest teams. Lumber is produced in sawmills. In Syktyvkar there is the greatest in Europe Timber Industrial Complex. It produces paper, cardboard and other paper products.

MOSCOW Moscow is the capital of Russia, its political, economic, commercial and cultural centre. It was founded 8 centuries ago by Prince Yuri Dolgoruky. Historians have accepted the year of 1147 as the start of Moscow’s history. Gradually the city became more and more powerful. Now Moscow is one of the largest cities in Europe. Its total area is about nine hundred square kilometres (ancient Moscow occupied the territory of the present-day Kremlin). The population of the city is about 12 million. The heart of Moscow is Red Square, the central and the most beautiful square in Moscow. Here one can see the Cathedral of St.Basil the Blessed, or St.Basil’s cathedral, erected by architects Postnik and Barma to commemorate Russia’s conquest of the Kazan kingdom in 1552. It is a masterpiece of Russian architecture. Tourists can see the monument to Minin and Pozharsky. In was designed by Ivan Martos in 1818 in memory of the Russian victory over the Polish invaders in 1612. The History Museum on Red Square is a magnificent building, besides, it is one of the major scientific and educational institutions where we can follow the life of Russian people since ancient times. But first of all everybody knows Red Square because the Kremlin is situated there. The Kremlin is the oldest historical and architectural centre of Moscow. Its three magnificent cathedrals, the Bell Tower of Ivan the Great, palaces and Spassky Tower with the clock attract the tourists’ attention. The Tzar cannon and the Tzar-bell, the biggest cannon and bell in the world, are also in the Kremlin.

RUSSIA
The Russian Federation is the largest country in the world. It occupies about one-seventh of the earth’s surface. Russia covers the eastern part of Europe and the northern part of Asia. Its total area is about 17 million square kilometres. The country is washed by 12 seas of 3 oceans: the Pacific, the Arctic and the Atlantic. In the south Russia borders on China, Mongolia, Korea, Kazakhstan, Georgia and Azerbaijan. In the west it borders on Norway, Finland, the Baltic States, Belorussia, the Ukraine. It also has a sea border with the USA. The population of Russia is 145,5 million people. 83 per cent are Russians. There are 1030 towns and cities in Russia. Moscow is the capital and the biggest city with a population of about 9 million people. There is hardly a country in the world where such a variety of scenery and vegetation can be found. We have steppes in the south, plains and forests in the midland, tundra and taiga in the north, highlands and deserts in the east. Russia is located on two plains. They are the Great Russian Plain and the West Siberian Lowland. There are several mountain chains on the territory of the country: the Urals, the Caucasus, the Altai and others. The largest mountain chain, the Urals, separates Europe from Asia.
