Industrial
Industrial music also finds its roots in rock, punk, heavy metal, and grunge. The instrumentation is very strange for a rock based music, and this helps the overall sound of the songs. It is called “industrial” because the songs come off as sounding frankly like a song you’d hear while working in a factory because of its repetitious instrumental sections and drumbeats, its heavy distortion, and its overall eerieness.
Nine Inch Nails was and is one of the first and most popular industrial bands of all time (all six years it’s been around). Like most rock-based music types, it has been promoted towards male teenagers, and it is primarily male teenagers who buy the CDs. Nine Inch Nails have been popular ever since the release of their first album Broken in 1991, and it was with this album that industrial music began to rise.
Blues Rock Blues rock was founded amidst the reformation ofrock ‘n’ roll in the 1960s. Blues rock is basically rock more heavily influenced by the blues. It used the same basic instrumentation as rock, and most songs are sung about love, life, drugs, or the blues.
Blues rock’s most famous performer, Jimi Hendrix, was a god. He combined funk, blues, and rock guitar and his songs have an unshakable mystical vibe that leaves most amazed. Hendrix died of an overdose in a hotel room bed in 1970. He revolutionized rock guitar and rock music forever.
Alternative
Alternative, a rock-based music, is the most popular kind of music among white adolescents. It also uses the classic “rock instrumentation”. Alternative was introduced in the early 90’s, and as years passed, it started gaining more and more listeners. And as it slowly became more and more popular, radio stations started playing it, until finally it actually became the mainstream white music for the 90’s.
Grunge
Grunge is another rock-based music. It was introduced in Seattle, Washington. in the late 80’s. It is heavily influenced by all 60’s rock and 80’s punk. It is very much like alternative, except it is more progressive, a little harder, more emotional and fervent and it’s less bizarre in a terms of melody.
Grunge was started by two bands— Soundgarden, and Mother Love Bone. Both of these bands were not very popular until after Mother Love Bone’s singer Andy Wood died of a drug overdose and Mother Love Bone evolved into Pearl Jam (the other featured artist here). Grunge shot out of Seattle in ‘90 and ‘91 and wasrecognized by critics and listeners alike. Grunge had a few very strong years in the mid 90’s until Nirvana (the most popular grunge band)’s singer committed suicide; more recently though, Soundgarden broke up, and the remaining grunge bands have either abandoned grunge or broken up as well. Now, grunge is in its death bed.
Ska
Ska is a changed version of the Jamacian reggae-based music. It combines alternative and punk rock with some elements of reggae. It uses the instrumentation of reggae, but the melodic influence comes from punk and alternative. Lyrically it is simple, but musically it is incredibly complicated. Ska tends to be mellow, flowing, and yet full of energy.
Techno
Techno is a dance-based music that is influenced by disco, funk, and electronic music. Almost everything on any techno song is synthesized or computer-generated, including the vocals, and all of the “instruments” are played on a keyboard. It is very musically and lyrically repetitous. Absolutely every techno song is about a so-called “love” and the music is almost always a five-note synthesized theme played throughout the song repeated over and over in different keys. And if you haven’t noticed already through my obviously biased but factual description of techno, I HATE IT!!!
