New World of Tourism

1__________

1 Worldwide, visitors flock to locations like Gettysburg, Pearl Harbor, Iwo Jima, Myanmar, Ypres and Normandy, regions and communities that have been nearly decimated by war and are now benefiting from the tourist dollar.

2 This industry was increased by flight logistics, technology, and the motivation to travel abroad. Many who had fought in Europe and Asia had a desire to return to areas where they had stayed. They wanted to show their families new places and say goodbye to fallen comrades.

3 Most tourists are interested in seeing history made 'real'. Seeing the ruins of a town make the war a reality to those who were not involved in the fighting. For some veterans of war, returning to these places may provide the opportunity to reach closure on a tragic period of life.

4 There is an intense feeling one experiences at such sites. Visitors simply stand in awe and visit an information centre on the grounds. Tour operators rarely see a tourist who is seeking a morbid experience. Rather, tourists are filled with respect for the dead.

5 A small number of tour operators accompany visitors to active areas, such as those located in Israel or Afghanistan. These tours are difficult to find and the tourists are not of the same type as those who visit the historical sites.

2____________

6 Judging by the surge since 2001 in the number of times this has appeared as a subject matter or in a session title in tourism industry conferences and programs, we can see that it is valued by tourism industry professionals as one of the most popular niches in the world's tourism industry. This makes sense, given recent consumer focus on healthy and organic eating and the simple fact that all travellers must eat. Not every visitor goes shopping or visits museums, but all travelers eat. For anyone who doubts, look at the increase in cooking shows featured on The Travel Channel or travel shows featured on The Food Network as examples.

7 It is not just experiences of the highest calibre - that would be gourmet tourism. This is perhaps best illustrated by the notion that it is about what is 'unique and memorable, not what is necessarily pretentious and exclusive'. Similarly, wine tourism, beer tourism and spa tourism are also regarded as subsets of culinary tourism.

8 Surgeon& Safari introduced medical tourism to South Africa in 1999, offering personalised rejuvination packages at the Orient-Express Hotels' Africa Collection. The packages includes either surgical or non-surgical procedures, with recuperation at the company's Westcliff Hotel in Johannesburg and Mount Nelson in Cape Town.

9 Established to provide a personalised experience for clients wanting surgery in complete privacy, Surgeon & Safari combines recuperation packages featuring pampering health and beauty treatments with luxury_ surroundings. Guests have the option of embarking on an exciting safari following their treatment as well at Orient-Express' Gametrackers camps in Botswana. Sample the elegant locations of the hotels, the Westcliff's proximity to local surgeons and clinics, and each property's layout and sense of privacy.

10 Surgeon & Safari works with leading plastic surgeons in private practise, and its personalized program includes liaison with a registered surgeon, on-line consultations, pre-/post surgical appointments, airport meet and greet, and special rates at either The Westcliff or Mount Nelson Hotels for the one to two-week recovery stay.

11 The Lake District Not known for anything except being poor and remote when little Willie Wordsworth was sent there by his uncle. His poems turned it into an 18th century tourist destination and it hasn't looked back since. His Dove Cottage is worth visiting.

12 Kununurra The big movie destination of 2009, helped along by the fact this it is virtually inaccessible. After the launch of 'Australia', there are a variety of tours to the remote north of Western Australia and the stunning landscapes of Kimberley. One 1,875km route takes followers to Darwin, Kakadu National Park, Katherine Gorge, Kununurra, El QuestroWildnerness Park, Halls Creek and Broome.

13 New Zealand You can't actually market someone from a fantasy tale, but it didn't stop the South Island after the success of Peter Jackson's The Lord of the Rings trilogy around the world. At one stage 'Welcome to Middle Earth' was plastered on the advertising boards at the airport.
