Advantages and disadvantages of living in the country and in the city.

(1)

There is a tendency in the modern society to abandon the country and to migrate to the city. More and more people, especially young and well educated, decide to live in large metropolises rather than in small towns or villages. The main factor that influences their decision is unemployment problem which is very acute in the country. The city offers many opportunities to young people. First of all, they can attend there the best universities and use the best learning resources which will allow them to develop their knowledge and skills. Good educational background increases their chances to find employment in good companies which will offer them lucrative posts. People who are ambitious and want to be successful and pursue their careers find in the city many possibilities to realize their potential and to gain the best professional experience. Besides, large modern metropolises provide their inhabitants with limitless sources of entertainment. Young people can socialize in cafes, pubs, clubs or discos or take part in various cultural events, like for example concerts, art exhibitions or spectacles in the theatre. Moreover, they can enjoy shopping in large shopping centres or department stores. All these charms and attractions of the city are appealing to young people, however when they start their own families they usually start missing peacefulness and tranquillity of country life. As they become older, people are tired with the hectic and stressful city life and often decide to move outside the city. However, country life, although more quiet and peaceful, has also disadvantages.

One of the drawbacks of living in the country is poor quality of education in schools there. Country schools usually do not have good facilities like for example gyms or computer rooms. Besides, students have often problems with finding studying materials as the access to the Internet still is not widespread there. Moreover, children develop their natural talents since they cannot attend any additional lessons or courses.

The most serious problem of living in the country is the problem with finding a job. There are no companies or factories that would offer people employment. Therefore most dwellers of the country are farmers who have to work very hard in the fields to earn their living. Those who are lucky enough, find work in nearby towns but then there is a problem with commuting as the communication network is not developed well in the country.

Another bad side of country life is lack of entertainment. There are no cafes or cinemas where people could spend their free time and socialize with their friends.

Obviously, living in the country also has many advantages. First of all, countryside is not polluted therefore you can breath there fresh air. Besides, there is hardly any road traffic thus you can enjoy silence in the country. You can also relax and go for a nice walk in the forest or in the meadows. What is more important, in the country people can grow their own fruit and vegetables which are healthier than those you can buy in the greengrocer's in the city.

Another advantage of country life is the fact that it is safer than life in a metropolis. In small towns or villages, crime rate is usually very low and people do not need to be afraid of having their house broken into or of being attacked and robbed in the street.

In addition, it seems that in the country the relationship between people are more genuine as people are more friendly and open there.

All things considering, it is obvious that both country and city life have their advantages and disadvantages. Some people find metropolises more exciting and appealing than small towns but others prefer beauty and tranquillity of the countryside. The choice whether to live depends on every person's character and preferences.

People usually get used to places where they live. Some people claim they would die of boredom if they had to live in the country but for others it is the fulfilment of their dreams. The truth is, however, that both country and city life have their advantages and disadvantages.

One of the most important advantages of country life is its peacefulness. There are less cars than in the city therefore there is no noise of traffic and you can enjoy listening to beautiful singing of nightingales on spring or summer evenings. Besides, the country is beneficial for our health. Since there is no industrial pollution in the country, air is clean and fresh and there. It is also possible to grow you own fruit and vegetables which are much healthier than those you buy from the greengrocer's. Another good side of living in the country is the fact that people are more friendly and helpful and there is a strong sense of community between them. In addition, the country is much safer than the city-there are few accidents and the crime rate is low.

Although living in the country has a lot of advantages, there are also many drawbacks. One of them is lack of entertainment and sport facilities. As there are no cinemas, theatres, swimming pools or tennis courts in the country, people living there must travel to the city in search for the entertainment or the opportunity to practice sports. Moreover, life there can be very hard. Country people are dependent on the soil they cultivate since the main source of their income is farming. Farming involves a lot of hard work in the fields and also some level of uncertainity because the crops could be destroyed by heavy rain or drought. Those who live in a village but work in the city experience another drawback of country live which is commuting. Often there are no good transport connections and travelling to and from the city every day can be very uncomfortable.

When it comes to the city life, it seems much more appealing. First of all, it gives better opportunities for education and work. There are many good schools and libraries which provides students with study materials. Moreover, children have more possibilities to develop their natural talents as they can attend various courses or practise sports. In addition, city offers many sources of entertainment; you can go to the cinema or theatre, visit a museum or ZOO or simply have a cup of coffe with your friends in a nice cafe. Besides, there are a lot of interesting shops which have on sale a wide range of various goods.

However, the city life has not only good sides but also bad ones. First of all, the costs of living are very high. Moreover, streets are dangerous at night because crime and violence are widespread. Another serious drawback is that there is a lot of pollution caused by the industry and there are not enough green areas in the city. Despite good transport connections, very often travelling in the city is not easy because of traffic jams. In addition, heavy traffic is the source of noise which have a harmful influence on human health. In addition, the fast pace of the city life often creates stress and leads to many health problems like, for example, heart diseases. Taking everything into consideration, it is obvious that both the city and the country have some good and also some bad sides. It seems to me that the country life is appealing to people who have spent their whole life in the city and are tird with noise, crowd, pollution and violence. They are attracted to the country's tranquility and the beauty of its landscapes. However, most young people born and brought up in villages dream about living in a big city which offers them better life and gives so many opportunities for self-fulfilment and achieving a success.

Adavantages and disadvantages of living in the country and in the city. (3)

Though Indian is mainly a land of villages, there are many cities as well in the country. Some of the cities like Delhi, Mumbai and Kolkata are very big. They have a population of several millions. Life in these big cities is quite different from the life in a village. Let us here consider, in brief, the life in a big city and point out some of its important advantages and disadvantages.

In big cities we find good arrangements for education. Big colleges even universities, are found here. Even a person of ordinary means can give his sons and daughters the highest education according to their financial capacity. There are also a very large number of schools both for boys and girls in very city. They also provide well-equipped libraries and reading rooms for public use. Such arrangements do not exist in small towns and villages.

Cities also provide ample medical facilities. In every city, there are good hospitals in which the poor get free medicines and treatment. Many well-qualified private doctors are also there to serve the sick and the suffering. Lack of such medical arrangement is a drawback of villages.

Besides this, cities also provide many fine opportunities for amusement and recreation. In every city there are a number of cinema houses and theatres, where we can enjoy the best pictures and dramatic performance. There are also a number of restaurants and hotels where we can get food, tea, etc, of the finest quality. There are also many parks and gardens where we can enjoy natural beauty at is best. The markets of the city, specially when brilliantly lighted at night, are better than many exhibitions and fairs.

The most important advantages of cities is the availability of avenues of employment. They are centres of trade and commerce. There are big offices as well as large number of factories and mills. Persons with every kind of qualification can easily find jobs to suit them. No such opportunities exist in villages where the people depend mostly on agriculture.

There are many other advantages of city life. City people are more cultured and refined. There we find opportunities to mix with people from every corner of the country as also from foreign countries. We meet people who have different nature, different ideas, and different ways of living and thinking. In this way, our outlook is broadened and our views enlarged.

Cities have many disadvantages also. The remark of the English poet Cowper "God made the country and man made the town" is quite true. In the City, we cannot enjoy the beauties of nature, as we can do in villages. City life is artificial. Man lives cut off from nature. He cannot appreciate the charms of birds and flowers, or the beauty of the day-dawn and the sunset as in villages.

City life is extremely unhealthy. Air pollution, water pollution and sound pollution have converted the city life into hell. The smoke coming out a number of factories makes the atmosphere dirty. The sky is always covered with black clouds. The people get no opportunity to breathe free and pure air, or to enjoy clear sunshine. Beside this, food in the cities is dirty and adulterated. We cannot get pure milk and ghee. The food sold in the market is entirely unwholesome and unfit for consumptions. The villages suffer from no such drawbacks.

One has to face many difficulties in a big city. Life is every costly. People have to live with pomp and show. A simple life, like that of the villages, is impossible in the city. Beside, the cities are over-crowded and people get very little accommodation. Rates are high and newcomers have to put up with a great deal of hardship. Distances are long and much time is wasted in going from one place to another.

People in the city do not have much sympathy for others. There is no fellow-feeling. That sympathy and close interdependence which is so marked in villages life is entirely lacking in the city. Such is the life in big city. That is why many people do not like to live there. Others prefer it owning to its medical and cultural advantages. It is all a matter of taste. I, myself, like to live in a village in the close vicinity of a city so that I may enjoy the pleasures both of the city and the country.
