serial – a story on TV or radio which is broadcast in separate parts
series – a set of TV or radio broadcasts on the same subject or using the same characters but in different situations
According to the British Film Institute the following rules of children’s admission to films have been established:
(U) – universal admission
(PG) – (parental guidance) children admitted but parents are warned that the film contains some material they may prefer their children not to see
(15) – no children under 15 years old
(18) – no one admitted under 18 years old
II. Decide which programmes from the TV schedule you would like to watch:
· Deduce as much information as you can about each programme.
- Write your final viewing schedule.
III. TV programmes are often accompanied with blurbs giving descriptions of these programmes. Match the blurbs with the titles of the programmes:
1. Liza Tarbuck hosts the last in the series of the big-money game show offering contestants the chance to win thousands of pounds by impressing a panel of judges, who whittle down the hopefuls according to information collected over the course of several rounds. Can the judges make the decision without prejudice?
2. South Yorkshire’s traffic police take part in Operation Mermaid, targeting trucks and vans used by gangs.
3. The second installment of Tuesday’s new reality show, continuing the story of Liverpudlian hairdresser Katy and Chelsea glamour model Natalie’s life swap.
4. Tim Marlow assesses Catherine the Great’s contribution to St Petersburg’s cultural heritage, including an art collection that boasts Rembrandts and Gainsboroughs.
5. Nick Halling and Russell Chamberlain introduce game two of the Stanley Cup final between Tampa Bay Lightning and Calgary Flames, who won Tuesday’s opener.
6. Sporting happy families, or maybe not, as Ian Wright and his adopted son, Shaun Wright-Phillips of Manchester City, take on cricketer Alec Stewart and his father Mickey.
7. A luxurious apartment in London’s Chelsea is among tonight’s final batch of properties to be both viewed and valued. Sally Mean hosts, Michael Holmes contributes pointers and market expertise.
8. How various people came face-to-face with various beasts and survived to tell the tale. Zoologist Nigel Marven is at least an enthusiastic host.

IV. In conjunction with the TV guide newspapers frequently print a short summary of the films being shown on that particular day. Choose three films you have seen recently and write a similar summary, giving:
- the title
- the names of the main stars
- a description of the plot (maximum 20 words)
- a film rating («average, ««good, «««excellent)
