PATTY Patty is a nurse. She’s got a hard job because she works in the hospice unit of a large hospital. The people in her ward know that they will die. They have diseases that cannot be cured. Patty likes her job because she helps patients and makes them more comfortable. She checks her patients every day when she comes in. She comes into their rooms with a bright smile and a cheerful voice. She says “Good morning”, and she has a conversation with them. Sometimes her patients can’t talk at all. Sometimes her patients complain about the difficult night they had. They tell her about their aches and pains. Mostly, they are happy to see her. Sometimes they talk about the past. Often they talk about their fears. Patty listens. She knows she has an important job. It’s difficult for the patients to talk to their families about death. They don’t want to upset people who love them. But Patty is not a member of the family. So they feel comfortable with Patty, and they talk about dying. Patty is a good listener. She thinks that is one of the most important parts of her job. Even though she doesn’t like to get too friendly with her patients, she always does. And she always feels sad when they die. She has a hard job.
