Books play a very important part in our life. There is practically no family that doesn’t have a book. It is impossible to live without books. There are probably more books on our planet than men are living now. They help us in self-education and in deciding problems of our life. In ancient times books were all written by hand and few copies were made, because it took a very long time to write a whole book with a pen. The books were written and kept in monasteries with great care. For many years the number of books was very small. Just few people had books to read and study. Most people couldn’t even read. The invention of printing had changed a lot in history, in development of culture, science and literature. When we think of books we can divide them into 3 classes. Firstly, special books of different branches of knowledge. Secondly there are numerous reference books, dictionaries and encyclopedias. And thirdly books for reading at leisure. Why do we read? A lot of people read for entertainment. They read science fiction, detective stories, and adventure stories. I believe this sort of literature develop imagination, logical thinking, broaden our outlook. Serious books take a longer time to read. To a thinking reader they will give new food for reflection every time she or he reads it. As an old proverb says, “A man cannot live on bread alone”. Books are the source of information, knowledge, emotional experience, spiritual food for a man.
