ACTION

Nevigramon is a synthetic chemotherapeutic agent, unique in its chemical structure. It is particularly active against certain gram-negative bacteria as Estherichia coli and several Proteus species. It is also active, but to a less extent; against other coliform bacteria, Aerobacter and Klebsiella species, certain Pseudomonas strains, as well as Neisseria, Brucella, Salmonella and Shigella.

Nevigramon proved to be active also against organisms resistant to other antibacterial agents. Upon oral intake it is readily absorbed from the intestines and is mainly excreted in the urine. Its antibacterial activity is independent of the urine's pH.

INDICATIONS

Acute and chronic urinary tract infections caused by gram-negative pathogens; cystitis, pyelitis, pyelonephritis, urethritis. Its use may also be attempted hi cases of colt dyspepsia, enterobacterial infections and brucellosis.

SIDE EFFECTS

There is evidence of Nevigramon to be well tolerated. Reactions of minor importance as nausea, vomiting, rash, urticaria, and diarrhoea may occasionally occur. Side effects on behalf of the nervous system as headache, dizziness, visual disturbances, excitement, depression, were reported in but few instances.

CONTRAINDICATIONS

Hepatic and renal impairment Epileptic seizures in the history.

PRECAUTION

The use of Nevigramon for the treatment of pulmonary infections caused by Klebsiella has to take place with utmost caution because of the hazard of respiratory depression.

Caution is indicated with the use of Nevigramon in early pregnancy. It should not be used in infants under one month of age. When present in the urine» the drag can produce false positive test for glucose.

Nevigramon should not be given concomitantly with Nitrofurantoin, since this combination tends to reduce the bacteriostatic effect.

The average daily dose for adults is four times 2 capsules (4 g) for at least one week, preferably for two weeks. Thereafter, if long-term treatment is indicated, the daily dose may be reduced to 2 g. Children may be given 60 mg/kg of body-weight daily, divided in two to four single doses.
