Wales is a small country. In the north and west it is washed by the Irish Sea and in the south by the Bristol Channel. Its total area is 8006 square miles and the population is about 2,8 million people. The ancient capital of Wales is Caernarvon, where the British Monarch’s eldest son is traditionally crowned Prince of Wales. Wales is divided into 13 counties but 70 per cent of the population resides in 3 industrial counties of the South: Glamorgan, Monmouth and Carmathen. Agriculture is the main occupation in other 10 counties in Mid-Wales and North-Wales. 2. Glamorgan is the biggest of 3 industrial counties in the south with nearly one-half of the total population of Wales. Its main industries are coal-mining, iron and steel, engineering. About 2/3 (two-thirds) of the population live in the South Wales coastal area, where 3 biggest towns are located: Swansea, Cardiff and Newport. 3. Cardiff is the modern national capital of Wales with the population of 280.000 people. It is the largest city in industrial South Wales. It became important due to coal mining and iron industries. Today the cargoes, it candles, are mainly imports to be distributed throughout South Wales. On imported grain it was developed flour milling as well as other food processing industries. Cardiff has got a modern shopping center where you can buy everything you wish. Cardiff valleys are the heart of Welsh coal and steel industries. 4. The main port of Wales is Milford Hayen, which is situated in the very south-west, due to its oil tanker traffic. It is one of the leading oil terminals of Britain. Refineries grew up on opposite shores and Milford Hayen became an important refining center. Petroleum is fed through a pipeline to a refinery near Swansea. Swansea is an important container port. And there is one of the biggest castles in Europe including a famous leaning tower. It was built by Normans to defend themselves against the Welsh. Swansea and Newport shared coal exports too. 5. South Wales is a region of contrasts. The industrial area where Swansea, Cardiff and Newport are located, is not far from sandy beaches and busy holiday resorts. Mid Wales is rather sparsely populated. Along the coast are many fishing ports. North Wales has several impressive castles built by English kings. Переведите устно 5 абзац и вопрос к нему.
