TOPIC. 3. TRAINING

 

I. OBJECTIVES OF SPORT TRAINING


Ex.1. The following slogans are from a magazine article called "Getting into Shape: Why Exercise?" Read each slogan and decide what it is about.

3. Jump and Kick, Don't Be Sick

4. Don't Worry, Be Happy

Ex. 2. With a partner decide which slogan from the previous exercise goes with each of the sentences.

a) Exercise improves blood circulation; so more oxygen gets to your brain.

b) Exercise helps you look and feel younger and maybe even live longer.

c) Exercise releases feel-good chemicals in the brain—called endorphins, so when you exercise you feel better.

d) Strength training builds stronger muscles, so you won't have any more aches and pains!

e) Aerobic activities make your heart stronger.

f) Work out for about 30 minutes in the late afternoon and you will get a good night's sleep.

g) Use different stretching exercises for better flexibility—make your muscles move easily.

h) Running, walking, swimming or jumping are a few ways to prevent cancer, arthritis and other diseases.


Which sport for which person?

Ex.3. Read about each of the following people and decide which sport(s) each one would probably enjoy. Complete the following sentences.

Don would probably enjoy.... Jenny would probably like.... Shelley would probably prefer.... Jonathan.... Antonio.... Abbey....

· Don, 45 – a businessman with very little free time but thinks that staying in shape is worth the effort; does not like the outdoors.

· Jenny, 25 – likes nature and the outdoors; enjoys being alone for long periods of time; thinks that personal challenges are important.

· Antonio, 16 – likes the water, works out every day after school; enjoys competition; expects the best from himself and from others; does well under pressure; hopes to become a professional athlete.

· Jonathan, 24 – thinks that winning is important and is prepared to train hard to beat his opponent; does not enjoy team sports.

· Shelley, 14 – works well in a team and would probably get along with teammates; expects a lot of herself and does her best when there are strong opponents on the other side.

· Abbey, 14 – likes sports for the fun of the game; competition is not important to her; runs once or twice a week before school; wants to become more involved in team sports and join a school team.

Compare your answers with a partner. Think of one sport you like playing or watching. Explain what you like about the sport and what that shows about the sport. Write your answer in your notebook.

 

Humor in cartoons is expressed by using word that has more than one meaning. This is called a pun or play on words.

Ex.4. Look at the two cartoons and read the captions. Use the dictionary definitions and write the correct meaning(s) for each of the words below in your notebook.

Cartoon Word   Dictionary Definitions  
Cartoon 1   run (line 1) run (line 2) - move quickly with your legs - cause to be in operation; use like a machine - go on a regular basis (e.g. The bus runs every 30 minutes.)

How does the pun help express the message of the cartoon?

Which cartoon best expresses the ideas of physical fitness? Discuss.

Ex.3. Read the list of words and expressions. Mind your pronunciation. Consult the dictionary if necessary.

train verb to prepare for a sporting competition, or prepare someone for a sporting competition, usually with a planned programme of appropriate physical exercises

trainer noun same as personal trainer

trainers plural noun shoes designed to be worn during athletic activities or exercising, but worn with casual clothing for any activity(= training shoes)

training noun the process of improving physical fitness by exercise and diet

training arena noun the place in which an athlete trains, which may differ in important ways from the contest arena

training cycle noun for a professional athlete, a phase of training which is repeated at regular intervals

training effect noun an increase in muscle strength or size caused by training

training manual noun a book that gives practical advice on exercise and training

training programme noun a coordinated programme of exercise designed to make an athlete fit for competition

training response noun an increase in aerobic capacity, strength, flexibility or body shape caused by exercise

training routine noun the usual exercises that an athlete performs each time he or she trains

training session noun a period of time during which an athlete trains, either alone, with a trainer or with their team

training to failure noun the practice of performing an exercise until it is physically impossible to do another rep

training zone noun the heart rate range within which a person should aim to exercise for maximum effect
