Tenses in the active voice 1 a) Read the sentences describing the nurses' work in the morning: 1 The working day begins very early. 2 The nurses take the patients' temperature, fulfil the doctors' prescriptions. 3 They apply mustard plasters, cup the patients, give injections, make compresses, and give medicines. b) Put the verbs in brackets into the past simple using the correct tense forms: 1 Yesterday the nurses (to take) the patients' temperature.
2 a) Read the sentences describing the doctors' work: 1 Every day doctors in charge make the morning round. 2 They examine the patients and talk with them. 3 The doctors listen to their hearts and lungs, palpate the abdominal parts. 4 They check blood pressure. 5 They look at the tonsils, feel their puls and make the diagnosis. 6 They prescribe the treatment to every patient. b) Put the verbs in brackets into the correct tense-forms: 1 This doctor (to make) the morning round every day. He (to examine) the patients and (to talk) with them. 2 Yesterday this doctor (to examine) the patients with great care. He (to check) their blood.
3 Transform into the interrogative form: 1 A nurse comes to the patient to give him penicillin injections.
4 Transform the following sentences into the past simple making all the necessary changes: 1 Small changes in body water cause profound changes in functioning. 2 Within a few days or a week the changes usually disappear. 3 Pain develops early. 4 Within twelve to twenty-four hours the pain and fever subside and the tympanic membrane becomes less red and swollen. 5 At times the inflammation persists for several days.
5 Transform into the future simple: 1 Breathing fresh air helps much in recovering from any disease. 2 The article deals with the therapeutic use of antibiotics. 3 Ukrainian surgeons perform open heart operations. 4 The patient undergoes a special course of treatment at the hospital. 5 Scientists penetrate into the secrets of nature. 6 He trains himself to discretion and patience.
6 Translate the following sentences: 1 У мене велика рана на руці. 2 На моїй руці є припухлість (набряк). 3 Я відчуваю сильний біль тут. 4 Учора я не міг поворухнути цією рукою.5 У мене сильний біль внизу живота праворуч. 6 Цей гострий біль непокоїть мене. 7 У мене була нудота і блювання.
7 a) Read the doctor’s questions about localization of the pain: 1 Do you feel any pain here? 2 Where do you feel the pain? 3 Show me the place where you feel the pain. 4 In what region do you have your pain? b) Fill in the intervals with verbs in the correct form: 1 … you feel any pain yesterday? 2 Where … you feel that pain? 3 Show me the place where you … that pain yesterday 4 In what region … you … your pain?

9 Put questions to a nurse. 10 You are a pediatrician and receive sick children in a polyclinic. 1 You are talking with a sick boy's mother. Ask her: a) 1 Her boy's name and surname. 2 His age. 3 What persons their family consists of. b) 1 What troubles this mother in her boy's condition? 2 What's happened? 3 When he fell ill. 4 What signs she noticed. 5 What his temperature is. 6 If she called in a doctor. 7 What medicine she gave to her child. 8 If he was ill with any infectious diseases. 9 What infectious diseases he had. 10 If he has got a BCG vaccine.
11 Answer the following questions. Make each answer a sentence: 1 Can you give intravenous injections? 2 What is it easier to give intramuscular or intravenous injections? 3 How old were you when you entered the Institute? 4 Do you know much about measles? 5 Why is it important to give first aid on the spot?
12 Answer the doctor’s questions using the given phrases: 1 What was wrong with you yesterday? A high temperature. 2 What else troubles you? A sore throat. 3 What do you complain of? My headache.
13 You are in a cardiological department. The chief physician of the department will answer your questions.
