Tenses in the active voice

1 a) Read the sentences describing the nurses' work in the morning:

1 The working day begins very early. 2 The nurses take the patients' temperature, fulfil the doctors' prescriptions. 3 They apply mustard plasters, cup the patients, give injections, make compresses, and give medicines.

b) Put the verbs in brackets into the past simple using the cor­rect tense forms:

1 Yesterday the nurses (to take) the patients' temperature.
2 They (to fulfil) the doctors' prescriptions. 3 The nurses (to cup)
the patients and (to apply) mustard plasters. 4 Than nurse (to give)
medicines to the patients. 5 She (to make) a compress to a patient.

 

2 a) Read the sentences describing the doctors' work:

1 Every day doctors in charge make the morning round. 2 They examine the patients and talk with them. 3 The doctors listen to their hearts and lungs, palpate the abdominal parts. 4 They check blood pressure. 5 They look at the tonsils, feel their puls and make the diagnosis. 6 They prescribe the treatment to every patient.

b) Put the verbs in brackets into the correct tense-forms:

1 This doctor (to make) the morning round every day. He (to examine) the patients and (to talk) with them. 2 Yesterday this doctor (to examine) the patients with great care. He (to check) their blood.

 

3 Transform into the interrogative form:

1 A nurse comes to the patient to give him penicillin injections.
2 A physician listens to the patient's heart and lungs and measures his blood pressure. 3 The nurse takes the patient's temperature. 4 The professor wrote many scientific works. 5 The cellular fraction consists of red blood cells, white blood cells and blood platelets. 6 The normal coagulation time is from three to five minutes. 7 Plasma is the fluid portion of the blood.

 

4 Transform the following sentences into the past simple making all the nece­ssary changes:

1 Small changes in body water cause profound changes in function­ing. 2 Within a few days or a week the changes usually disappear. 3 Pain develops early. 4 Within twelve to twenty-four hours the pain and fever subside and the tympanic membrane becomes less red and swollen. 5 At times the inflammation persists for several days.

 

5 Transform into the future simple:

1 Breathing fresh air helps much in recovering from any disease. 2 The article deals with the therapeutic use of antibiotics. 3 Ukrainian surgeons perform open heart operations. 4 The patient undergoes a special course of treatment at the hospital. 5 Scientists penetrate into the secrets of nature. 6 He trains himself to discretion and patience.

 

6 Translate the following sentences:

1 У мене велика рана на руці. 2 На моїй руці є припухлість (набряк). 3 Я відчуваю сильний біль тут. 4 Учора я не міг поворухнути цією рукою.5 У мене сильний біль внизу живота праворуч. 6 Цей гострий біль непокоїть мене. 7 У мене була нудота і блювання.

 

7 a) Read the doctor’s questions about localization of the pain:

1 Do you feel any pain here? 2 Where do you feel the pain? 3 Show me the place where you feel the pain. 4 In what region do you have your pain?

b) Fill in the intervals with verbs in the correct form:

1 … you feel any pain yesterday? 2 Where … you feel that pain? 3 Show me the place where you … that pain yesterday 4 In what region … you … your pain?

 

8 Explain the use of to do in each sentence:

1 Did you speak to him? No, I didn't.2 Do stay with usa little longer. 3 Where does he live? 4 He will do it by himself. 5 Don't open the window. 6 What did he do there? 7 I am sorry you don't know my brother.—But I do know him.

 

9 Put questions to a nurse. Fill in the intervals with verbs in the correct form:

1 What... this patient's temperature? 2... you give him the drugs yesterday? 3 How... times did... give him these tablets? 4 Did you... him mustard plasters on the back? 5 When... you cup him last week? 6... you fulfil all my prescriptions every day? 7 Have a laryngologist... him today? 8 What … he say?

 

10 You are a pediatrician and receive sick children in a polyclinic.

1 You are talking with a sick boy's mother. Ask her:

a) 1 Her boy's name and surname. 2 His age. 3 What persons their family consists of.

b) 1 What troubles this mother in her boy's condition? 2 What's happened? 3 When he fell ill. 4 What signs she noticed. 5 What his temperature is. 6 If she called in a doctor. 7 What medicine she gave to her child. 8 If he was ill with any infectious diseases. 9 What in­fectious diseases he had. 10 If he has got a BCG vaccine.

 

11 Answer the following questions. Make each answer a sentence:

1 Can you give intravenous injections? 2 What is it easier to give intramuscular or intravenous injections? 3 How old were you when you entered the Institute? 4 Do you know much about measles? 5 Why is it important to give first aid on the spot?

 

12 Answer the doctor’s questions using the given phrases:

1 What was wrong with you yesterday? A high temperature. 2 What else troubles you? A sore throat. 3 What do you complain of? My headache.

 

 

13 You are in a cardiological department. The chief physician of the department will answer your questions. Ask him as follows:

a) General facts about the department.

1 How many wards there are in this department. 2 If they have large or small wards. 3 If they have additional out-houses. 4 What devices, apparatus one can see.

b) Their patients.

1 How many patients this department houses. 2 What diseases their patients have. 3 If they have patients suffering from rheumatism, hypertonicity, ischemic diseases and others. 4 If their patients pay for their treatment.

c) Their method of treatment.

1 What modern methods of treatment they use. 2 If they use the method of detoxication of the human organism. 3 If they use ultra-violet and laser rays for the treatment of blood. 4 What methods they practice for the examination of the patients. 5 If they use ultra-sound method. 6 If they practice radio-immunological methods. 7 If they use endoscopy. 8 If they have a cardiograph. 9 How they treat active rheumatism, hypertonicity and others.

d) The students’ work.

1 If the medical students have practice at their department. 2 What procedures the students do. 3 Who teaches the students to fulfil different procedures. 4 What tasks their practical programme includes. 5 If the students fulfil their tasks.

 

14 Translate the following questions:

1 На що ви скаржитесь? 2 Що сталося? 3 Що ще непокоїть вас? 4 На що ви скаржилися вчора? 5 Що вас непокоїло?

Конструкція to be going (to)

І am going to read this book. Я збираюся (маю намір) прочитати цю книгу.

 

15 Translate the following:

1 He is reading a book now. I am going to read too. 2 They are working in a laboratory at present. We are going to work in the laboratory too. 3 The therapeutist is examining his patients now. The pediatrician is going to examine these children. 4 These nurses are giving the drugs to the patients now. This nurse is going to give the drugs to the patients too. 5 The patients are having their dinner at present. 6 The students are going to have their dinner too.

 

16 Answer the questions according to the model:

A.: I have already published my findings. Have you?

B.: I have not published my findings

I’ll have published them by the end of the month

1 I have already changed my method of research. Have you? 2 I have already counted the red blood cell. Have you? 3 They have completed their investigations. Have they?

 

17 Supply already or yet:

1 The scientists have introduced this term. 2 The researchers have not found out the origin of this disease. 3 The people have estimated the importance of this great discovery. 4 They have not published the book on their discoveries.

 

18 Explain the use of the definite time in each sentence:

1 a) I am waiting for the results of my blood analysis. б) I have been waiting for the results of my blood analysis for an hour. 2 a) The surgeon is examining the patient. б) The surgeon has been examining the patient for half an hour. 3 a) The nurse is giving the injections. б) The nurse has been giving the injections for two hours. 4 Professor Petrov delivered the lecture in Physiology yesterday. 5 Professor Petrov has already delivered the lecture in Physiology. 6 Professor Petrov has not yet delivered the lecture in Physiology. 7 Yesterday we got interesting findings after our experiments on animals. 8 We have just got some interesting findings after our experiments on animals. 9 We have not yet got any interesting findings after our experiment on animals.

 

19 Choose the correct form:

Mrs. Wood has hurt her arm. She is at the doctor’s.

Doctor: Does your arm hurt when you move it, Mrs. Woods?

Mrs. Woods: Yes, a little. It’s hurting/It’s been hurting me for about a week now. I fell/I was falling off a ladder when I cleaned/I was cleaning the windows at home last Tuesday. Are you thinking/Do you think that I’ve broken/I’ve been breaking my arm, doctor?

20 Translate the following:

1 The doctor had finished the examination of the patients when we came there. 2 What are these students waiting for? 3 Did the doctor make exact diagnose of the illness? 4 They were discussing this question at 6 o'clock yesterday. 5 They will be working at the surgical department from 9 till 12 o'clock tomorrow. 6 This Institute developed unique methods for the treatment of this disease. 7 Have you ever used this method of treatment? 8 Vascular surgery has made great progress. 9 We know that this professor had invented a new apparatus. 10 Does this doctor work at your hospital? 11 At present he is performing an operation.

 

21 Choose the necessary form of the verb:

23 Translate the following sentences, note the use of different tense forms:

26 Rearrange the words to obtain the correct word order:

28 Translate the doctor’s questions:

30 a) Read the sentences used by a doctor during the examination:

1 Open your mouth, please. 2 Say “Ah”. 3 Strip to the waist. 4 Breathe deeply. Don’t breathe. 5 Stand quietly. 6 Lie down on the coach. 7 Show me where have you pain. 8 Dress now.

b) Say your indications and requests to your patient using the correct form of the verb:

to take the temperature, to show the tongue, to stand quietly, to strip to the waist, to breathe deeply, to lie down on the coach.

 

31 You are giving the sick boy's mother some instructions and advices. Put the verbs in the suitable form:

1 To apply cups (mustard plasters) on her child. 2 To give the prescribed medicine. 3 To give hot milk or hot tea with raspberry jam. 4 To make her boy an enema. 5 To keep her boy in bed. 6 To make his analyses of blood and urine. 7 To control his temperature. 8 To pay more attention to his feeding. 9 To give him some vitamins. 10 To visit the pediatrician after some days.

32 Give your instructions using the verbs in the correct form:

To the child: 1 to come here; 2 to take off your shirt; 3 to breathe deeply; 4 to turn round; 5 to lie down on the coach; 6 to stand up; 7 to open your mouth; 8 to show your tongue.

To his mother: 1 to take your child in your lap; 2 to take off his shirt; 3 to dress him; 4 to apply mustard plasters and cupping-glasses every other day; 5 to keep him in a bed; 6 to give him the medicine; 7 to give him to drink hot milk.

 

33 Give the doctor’s instructions:

1 (to ask) the doctor to come here. 2 (to give) the medicine to this patient. 3 (to examine) these patients, please. 4 (to fill in) this case history. 5 (to help) this boy to use the thermometer. 6 (not to pick up) this medicine.

 

34 Translate the following:
