TO BUILD A FIRE 4 страница

When all was ready (когда все было готово), the man reached in his pocket for a second piece of birch-bark (человек засунул /руку/ в карман за вторым куском березовой коры; to reach — протягивать; дотягиваться). He knew the bark was there (он знал, /что/ кора была там), and, though he could not feel it with his fingers (и хотя он не мог почувствовать ее своими пальцами), he could hear its crisp rustling as he fumbled for it (он мог слышать ее шуршание, когда он рылся /в кармане, ища/ ее; crisp — хрустящий; твердый; rustling — шелест, шорох, шуршание). Try as he would (как он ни старался), he could not clutch hold of it (он не мог ухватить ее; to clutch — хвататься; сжимать; hold — захват; удержание). And all the time, in his consciousness, was the knowledge (и все это время в его сознании сидела мысль: «было знание») that each instant his feet were freezing (что /с/ каждым мгновением его ступни /все больше/ замерзают). This thought tended to put him in a panic (эта мысль стремилась повергнуть его в панику; to tend — иметь тенденцию; склоняться, тяготеть; to put — класть; помещать), but he fought against it and kept calm (но он боролся с ней и оставался спокойным; to keep — держать/ся/; сохранять/ся/; оставаться /в каком-либо состоянии/; to fight). He pulled on his mittens with his teeth (он натянул свои рукавицы зубами), and threshed his arms back and forth (и размахивал своими руками взад и вперед; to thresh = to thrash — молотить; колотить; ударять; метаться; arm — рука /от кисти до плеча/), beating his hands with all his might against his sides (ударяя ладонями изо всех своих сил по бокам: «сторонам»; hand — рука /кисть/). He did this sitting down (он делал это сидя), and he stood up to do it (а /потом/ он делал это стоя: «встал, чтобы делать это»); and all the while the dog sat in the snow (и все это время собака сидела в снегу), its wolf-brush of a tail curled around warmly over its forefeet (ее волчий пушистый хвост /при этом/ обвился, согревая, вокруг ее передних лап; brush — щетка; пушистый хвост; tail — хвост; warmly — тепло; over — над, выше), its sharp wolf-ears pricked forward intently as it watched the man (ее заостренные волчьи уши торчали настороженно вперед, в то время как она наблюдала /за/ человеком; to prick — /у/колоть/ся/; торчать, навострить /об ушах/; intently — внимательно, сосредоточенно). And the man, as he beat and threshed with his arms and hands (и человек, пока он бил и размахивал руками; arm — рука /от кисти до плеча/; hand — рука /кисть/), felt a great surge of envy as he regarded the creature (чувствовал, /как в нем поднимается/ огромная волна зависти, когда он разглядывал это существо) that was warm and secure in its natural covering (которому было тепло и надежно в его природном одеянии; secure — спокойный; безопасный, надежный, защищенный; covering — оболочка; укрытие).

consciousness [`kOnSqsnIs], wolf [wulf], secure [sI`kjuq]

When all was ready, the man reached in his pocket for a second piece of birch-bark. He knew the bark was there, and, though he could not feel it with his fingers, he could hear its crisp rustling as he fumbled for it. Try as he would, he could not clutch hold of it. And all the time, in his consciousness, was the knowledge that each instant his feet were freezing. This thought tended to put him in a panic, but he fought against it and kept calm. He pulled on his mittens with his teeth, and threshed his arms back and forth, beating his hands with all his might against his sides. He did this sitting down, and he stood up to do it; and all the while the dog sat in the snow, its wolf-brush of a tail curled around warmly over its forefeet, its sharp wolf-ears pricked forward intently as it watched the man. And the man, as he beat and threshed with his arms and hands, felt a great surge of envy as he regarded the creature that was warm and secure in its natural covering.

After a time (спустя какое-то время) he was aware of the first faraway signals of sensation in his beaten fingers (он почувствовал первые отдаленные признаки чувствительности: «сигналы ощущения» в своих избитых пальцах; to be aware of — знать, сознавать). The faint tingling grew stronger (слабое покалывание становилось /все/ сильнее; to grow — расти; делаться, становиться) till it evolved into a stinging ache that was excruciating (до тех пор, пока /не/ перешло в жгучую боль, которая была мучительной; to evolve — развивать/ся/; эволюционировать), but which the man hailed with satisfaction (но которую человек с удовлетворением приветствовал). He stripped the mitten from his right hand (он сорвал рукавицу со своей правой руки) and fetched forth the birch-bark (и вытащил березовую кору; to fetch — приносить; пойти за; forth — вперед; впредь; вовне, наружу). The exposed fingers were quickly going numb again (незащищенные пальцы быстро коченели снова; to go — идти; делаться, становиться /с последующим прилагательным или существительным/; numb — онемелый; окоченелый). Next he brought out his bunch of sulphur matches (потом он вытащил свою пачку серных спичек; bunch — связка, пучок, пачка /чего-либо однородного/). But the tremendous cold had already driven the life out of his fingers (но ужасный холод уже изгнал жизнь из его пальцев). In his effort to separate one match from the others (в попытке взять одну спичку: «отделить одну спичку от других»), the whole bunch fell in the snow (/у него/ вся пачка упала в снег). He tried to pick it out of the snow, but failed (он попытался вытащить ее из снега, но не смог: «потерпел неудачу»). The dead fingers could neither touch nor clutch (омертвевшие пальцы /не/ могли ни осязать, ни хватать). He was very careful (он был очень внимателен). He drove the thought of his freezing feet (он изгнал мысль о своих замерзающих ступнях), and nose (и носе), and cheeks (и щеках), out of his mind (из своей головы: «ума»; to drive out — выгонять), devoting his whole soul to the matches (посвятив = отдав всю свою душу спичкам). He watched (он /внимательно/ наблюдал), using the sense of vision in place of that of touch (используя зрение: «чувство зрения» вместо осязания: «чувства осязания»; that — тот; заменяет слово во избежание его повторения), and when he saw his fingers on each side the bunch (и когда он увидел свои пальцы на каждой /из/ сторон пачки), he closed them — that is, he willed to close them (он сомкнул их, то есть он хотел сомкнуть их; to close — закрывать; соединять, объединять), for the wires were down, and the fingers did not obey (ибо провода = связь /с ними/ ослабла, и пальцы не слушались /его/; to be down — ослабевать, снижаться). He pulled the mitten on the right hand (он натянул рукавицу на правую руку), and beat it fiercely against his knee (и /стал/ яростно бить ею = рукой по колену). Then, with both mittened hands (затем обеими руками, одетыми в рукавицы), he scooped the bunch of matches, along with much snow, into his lap (он зачерпнул = сгреб пачку спичек вместе с кучей снега на свои колени; much — много). Yet he was no better off (однако, легче ему не стало; to be better off — быть в более лучших, благоприятных условиях).

excruciate [Iks`krHSIeIt], separate [ гл. `sepqreIt, прил.,сущ. `seprIt], neither [`naIDq, `nJDq]

After a time he was aware of the first faraway signals of sensation in his beaten fingers. The faint tingling grew stronger till it evolved into a stinging ache that was excruciating, but which the man hailed with satisfaction. He stripped the mitten from his right hand and fetched forth the birch-bark. The exposed fingers were quickly going numb again. Next he brought out his bunch of sulphur matches. But the tremendous cold had already driven the life out of his fingers. In his effort to separate one match from the others, the whole bunch fell in the snow. He tried to pick it out of the snow, but failed. The dead fingers could neither touch nor clutch. He was very careful. He drove the thought of his freezing feet, and nose, and cheeks, out of his mind, devoting his whole soul to the matches. He watched, using the sense of vision in place of that of touch, and when he saw his fingers on each side the bunch, he closed them — that is, he willed to close them, for the wires were down, and the fingers did not obey. He pulled the mitten on the right hand, and beat it fiercely against his knee. Then, with both mittened hands, he scooped the bunch of matches, along with much snow, into his lap. Yet he was no better off.

After some manipulation (после нескольких манипуляций) he managed to get the bunch between the heels of his mittened hands (ему удалось зажать пачку между запястьями рук, одетых в рукавицы; to get — получить; heel — пятка; все, что напоминает пятку, например, часть ладони около запястья). In this fashion he carried it to his mouth (таким способом он донес ее до своего рта; fashion — образ, манера; мода). The ice crackled and snapped (лед затрещал и разломался) when by a violent effort he opened his mouth (когда неимоверным усилием он открыл свой рот; violent — сильный, неистовый, яростный). He drew the lower jaw in (он втянул нижнюю челюсть), curled the upper lip out of the way (приподнял верхнюю губу: «скрутил верхнюю губу с дороги»; to curl — завивать/ся/; кривить /губы/), and scraped the bunch with his upper teeth in order to separate a match (и /начал/ скрести пачку своими верхними зубами, для того чтобы взять: «отделить» одну спичку). He succeeded in getting one (ему удалось достать одну; to succeed — следовать за; достигать цели, преуспевать), which he dropped on his lap (которую он уронил на колени). He was no better off (/от этого/ ему не стало легче; to be better off — быть в более лучших, благоприятных условиях). He could not pick it up (он не мог поднять ее). Then he devised a way (потом он придумал один способ). He picked it up in his teeth and scratched it on his leg (он поднял = взял ее в зубы и /стал/ чиркать ею о свою ногу; leg — нога /от бедра до ступни/). Twenty times he scratched before he succeeded in lighting it (двадцать раз он чиркнул /ею/, прежде чем ему удалось зажечь ее). As it flamed he held it with his teeth to the birch-bark (пока она пылала, он, держа ее /в/ зубах, /поднес/ к березовой коре). But the burning brimstone (но /дым от/ горящей самородной серы) went up his nostrils and into his lungs (попал: «поднялся» /в/ его ноздри и /оттуда/ в легкие), causing him to cough spasmodically (заставляя его непроизвольно: «судорожно» закашляться; to cause — быть причиной, вызывать). The match fell into the snow and went out (спичка упала в снег и погасла).

violent [`vaIqlqnt], devise [dI`vaIz], cough [kOf]

After some manipulation he managed to get the bunch between the heels of his mittened hands. In this fashion he carried it to his mouth. The ice crackled and snapped when by a violent effort he opened his mouth. He drew the lower jaw in, curled the upper lip out of the way, and scraped the bunch with his upper teeth in order to separate a match. He succeeded in getting one, which he dropped on his lap. He was no better off. He could not pick it up. Then he devised a way. He picked it up in his teeth and scratched it on his leg. Twenty times he scratched before he succeeded in lighting it. The old-timer on Sulphur Creek was right (старожил на Салфур-Крике был прав), he thought in the moment of controlled despair that ensued (подумал он в момент /еле/ сдерживаемого отчаяния, которое последовало /за этим/; to control — управлять; контролировать; сдерживать): after fifty below, a man should travel with a partner (/если мороз/ за пятьдесят /градусов/ ниже нуля, нужно брать с собой в дорогу напарника: «человек должен путешествовать с партнером»). He beat his hands, but failed in exciting any sensation (он заколотил руками, но /у него/ не получилось вызвать какое-либо ощущение /в них/; hand — рука /кисть/). Suddenly he bared both hands (внезапно он оголил обе руки), removing the mittens with his teeth (снимая рукавицы зубами; to remove — передвигать; убирать; снимать). He caught the whole bunch between the heels of his hands (он зажал: «поймал» целую пачку /спичек/ между запястьями рук; heel — пятка; часть ладони около запястья). His arm-muscles not being frozen (мышцы его рук, не будучи замерзшими; arm — рука /от кисти до плеча/) enabled him to press the hand-heels tightly against the matches (позволили ему плотно прижать запястья рук к спичкам; to enable — давать возможность; делать возможным). Then he scratched the bunch along his leg (затем он чиркнул /всей/ пачкой по ноге). It flared into flame (она вспыхнула ярким пламенем; to flare — гореть ярким, неровным пламенем; ярко вспыхивать), seventy sulphur matches at once (семьдесят серных спичек сразу)! There was no wind to blow them out (/не/ было никакого ветра, /который мог бы/ задуть их). He kept his head to one side to escape the strangling fumes (он повернул: «держал» свою голову в одну сторону, чтобы спастись от: «избежать» удушающего дыма), and held the blazing bunch to the birch-bark (и держал пылающую пачку у березовой коры). As he so held it (/и/ пока он так держал ее), he became aware of sensation in his hand (он стал ощущать свою руку; aware — знающий, сознающий; sensation — ощущение, чувство). His flesh was burning (его плоть горела). He could smell it (он мог чувствовать ее запах). Deep down below the surface he could feel it (/где-то/ глубоко внутри: «внизу» под кожей: «поверхностью» он мог чувствовать это). The sensation developed into pain that grew acute (это ощущение развилось = превратилось в боль, которая стала острой). And still he endured it (и все же он терпел ее), holding the flame of the matches clumsily to the bark (неловко держа пламя спичек = пылающие спички у коры) that would not light readily (которая ни за что не хотела быстро загораться) because his own burning hands were in the way (потому что его собственные горящие руки были на /ее/ пути) absorbing most of the flame (поглощая почти все пламя; most — наибольший; большинство, большая часть).

control [kqn`trqul], tightly [`taItlI], acute [q`kjHt]

The old-timer on Sulphur Creek was right, he thought in the moment of controlled despair that ensued: after fifty below, a man should travel with a partner. He beat his hands, but failed in exciting any sensation. Suddenly he bared both hands, removing the mittens with his teeth. He caught the whole bunch between the heels of his hands. His arm-muscles not being frozen enabled him to press the hand-heels tightly against the matches. Then he scratched the bunch along his leg. It flared into flame, seventy sulphur matches at once! There was no wind to blow them out. He kept his head to one side to escape the strangling fumes, and held the blazing bunch to the birch-bark. As he so held it, he became aware of sensation in his hand. His flesh was burning. He could smell it. Deep down below the surface he could feel it. The sensation developed into pain that grew acute. And still he endured it, holding the flame of the matches clumsily to the bark that would not light readily because his own burning hands were in the way, absorbing most of the flame.

At last, when he could endure no more (наконец, когда он уже не мог больше терпеть; no more — больше не), he jerked his hands apart (он отдернул руки; to jerk — резко толкать; дергать; швырять; apart — врозь). The blazing matches fell sizzling into the snow (пылающие спички упали, шипя, в снег), but the birch-bark was alight (но березовая кора /уже/ горела; alight — зажженный; в огне, охваченный огнем). He began laying dry grasses and the tiniest twigs on the flame (он начал класть сухую траву и мельчайшие веточки на это пламя; tiny — очень маленький, крошечный). He could not pick and choose (он не мог быть /уж очень/ разборчивым: «не мог собирать и выбирать»), for he had to lift the fuel between the heels of his hands (так как ему приходилось поднимать топливо, /зажав его/ между запястьями рук; heel — пятка; часть ладони около запястья). Small pieces of rotten wood and green moss clung to the twigs (маленькие куски = кусочки гнилой/трухлявой древесины и зеленого мха цеплялись за веточки; to cling), and he bit them off as well as he could with his teeth (и он отгрызал их зубами, как мог: «так хорошо, как он мог»; to bite off). He cherished the flame carefully and awkwardly (он ухаживал /за/ этим пламенем бережно и неуклюже; to cherish — заботливо относиться; холить и лелеять). It meant life, and it must not perish (оно означало жизнь и не должно было погибнуть). The withdrawal of blood from the surface of his body (отток крови от поверхности его тела; withdrawal — отдергивание; уход; отзыв; изъятие) now made him begin to shiver (теперь вызывал у него озноб: «заставил его начать дрожать /от холода/»), and he grew more awkward (и он стал /еще/ более неуклюжим). A large piece of green moss fell squarely on the little fire (большой кусок зеленого мха упал прямо на разгорающийся: «маленький» огонек). He tried to poke it out with his fingers (он пытался выковырнуть его /из костра/ своими пальцами; to poke — тыкать; толкать; расковырять; out — наружу), but his shivering frame made him poke too far (но его дрожащее тело вынудило его ковырнуть слишком глубоко: «далеко»; frame — остов; тело), and he disrupted the nucleus of the little fire (и он разрушил зародыш маленького костра; nucleus — ядро; центр; зародыш), the burning grasses and tiny twigs separating and scattering (горящая трава и крошечные веточки разлетелись /в стороны/; to separate — отделять/ся/; to scatter — разбрасывать; рассыпать). He tried to poke them together again (он пытался столкнуть = собрать их снова вместе), but in spite of the tenseness of the effort (но несмотря на все /свои/ усилия; tenseness — интенсивность; напряженность), his shivering got away with him (его дрожи удалось взять над ним верх; to get away with — удаваться обмануть; уйти от наказания, выйти сухим из воды), and the twigs were hopelessly scattered (и веточки безнадежно рассыпались: «были рассыпаны /им/»). Each twig gushed a puff of smoke and went out (каждая веточка с шипением выпустила дымок и погасла; to gush — хлынуть; извергать/ся/; puff — выдох; облако /дыма, пара и т.п./; звук, издаваемый при выдохе или выпуске воздуха, пара и т.п. /пыхтение, шипение и т.д./). The fire-provider had failed (добытчик огня потерпел неудачу; provider — снабженец; поставщик). As he looked apathetically about him (когда он безучастно огляделся вокруг себя), his eyes chanced on the dog (ему на глаза попалась собака; to chance on/upon — случайно обнаружить, наткнуться), sitting across the ruins of the fire from him, in the snow (сидящая в снегу напротив него по ту сторону остатков костра; across — напротив; по ту сторону; ruins — развалины; руины; остатки, останки), making restless, hunching movements (/и/ делающая беспокойные, прогибающиеся движения; to hunch — толкать; сгибать/ся/; съеживаться), slightly lifting one forefoot and then the other (слегка приподнимающая /то/ одну переднюю лапу, то потом другую), shifting its weight back and forth on them with wistful eagerness (переминающаяся: «перемещающая свой вес на них туда и обратно» с тоскливым усердием).

withdrawal [wID`drL(q)l], squarely [`skweqlI], apathetically [xpq`TetIkqlI]

At last, when he could endure no more, he jerked his hands apart. The blazing matches fell sizzling into the snow, but the birch-bark was alight. He began laying dry grasses and the tiniest twigs on the flame. He could not pick and choose, for he had to lift the fuel between the heels of his hands. Small pieces of rotten wood and green moss clung to the twigs, and he bit them off as well as he could with his teeth. He cherished the flame carefully and awkwardly. It meant life, and it must not perish. The withdrawal of blood from the surface of his body now made him begin to shiver, and he grew more awkward. A large piece of green moss fell squarely on the little fire. He tried to poke it out with his fingers, but his shivering frame made him poke too far, and he disrupted the nucleus of the little fire, the burning grasses and tiny twigs separating and scattering. He tried to poke them together again, but in spite of the tenseness of the effort, his shivering got away with him, and the twigs were hopelessly scattered. Each twig gushed a puff of smoke and went out. The fire-provider had failed. As he looked apathetically about him, his eyes chanced on the dog, sitting across the ruins of the fire from him, in the snow, making restless, hunching movements, slightly lifting one forefoot and then the other, shifting its weight back and forth on them with wistful eagerness.

The sight of the dog put a wild idea into his head (вид собаки навел его на дикую мысль: «поместил дикую идею в его голову»). He remembered the tale of the man (он вспомнил рассказ о том человеке), caught in a blizzard (застигнутым снежной бурей), who killed a steer and crawled inside the carcass (который убил бычка и забрался: «заполз» внутрь туши; steer — кастрированный бычок; молодой вол), and so was saved (и так спасся: «был спасен»). He would kill the dog (он убьет собаку) and bury his hands in the warm body (и погрузит свои руки в /ее/ теплое тело; to bury — хоронить, зарывать в землю; прятать; погружаться) until the numbness went out of them (пока они не согреются: «пока окоченение /не/ уйдет из них»). Then he could build another fire (/и/ потом он сможет разложить новый костер; another — еще один; другой). He spoke to the dog, calling it to him (он заговорил с собакой, подзывая ее к себе); but in his voice was a strange note of fear that frightened the animal (но в его голосе слышалась: «была» незнакомая нотка страха, которая напугала животное), who had never known the man to speak in such way before (которое раньше никогда /не/ знало = не слышало, /чтобы/ человек говорил /с ней/ в такой манере). Something was the matter (что-то было не так; the matter — неладно, не так), and its suspicious nature sensed danger (и подозрительная натура собаки: «ее» почувствовала опасность) — it knew not what danger (она не знала, что /это за/ опасность), but somewhere, somehow, in its brain arose an apprehension of the man (но где-то, как-то, в ее уме возникло опасение перед человеком; to apprehend — понимать; опасаться; предчувствовать). It flattened its ears down at the sound of the man's voice (она прижала свои уши при звуке человеческого голоса; to flatten — выравнивать/ся/; расплющивать; повалить, примять; down — вниз), and its restless, hunching movements (и ее беспокойные, прогибающиеся движения; to hunch — толкать; сгибать/ся/; съеживаться) and the liftings and shiftings of its forefeet (и эти подъемы и переступания ее передних лап) became more pronounced (стали более выраженными; pronounced — резко выраженный; определенный, отчетливый, явный); but it would not come to the man (но она ни за что не хотела подходить к человеку). He got on his hands and knees and crawled toward the dog (он встал на четвереньки: «на кисти и колени» и пополз к собаке). This unusual posture again excited suspicion (эта необычная поза снова возбудила /в ней/ подозрение), and the animal sidled mincingly away (и животное /стало/ потихоньку пятиться /от него/; to sidle — /под/ходить бочком, робко, украдкой; away — прочь; mincing — жеманный; семенящий).

bury [`berI], suspicious [sqs`pISqs], sidle [saIdl]

The sight of the dog put a wild idea into his head. He remembered the tale of the man, caught in a blizzard, who killed a steer and crawled inside the carcass, and so was saved. He would kill the dog and bury his hands in the warm body until the numbness went out of them. Then he could build another fire. He spoke to the dog, calling it to him; but in his voice was a strange note of fear that frightened the animal, who had never known the man to speak in such way before. Something was the matter, and its suspicious nature sensed danger — it knew not what danger, but somewhere, somehow, in its brain arose an apprehension of the man. It flattened its ears down at the sound of the man's voice, and its restless, hunching movements and the liftings and shiftings of its forefeet became more pronounced; but it would not come to the man. He got on his hands and knees and crawled toward the dog. This unusual posture again excited suspicion, and the animal sidled mincingly away.

The man sat up in the snow for a moment (человек, /выпрямившись/, сел на минутку в снег; to sit up — приподняться и сесть; сидеть прямо; выпрямиться; moment — момент, минута, миг) and struggled for calmness (и старался /вернуть себе/ хладнокровие: «спокойствие»; to struggle — бороться; стараться изо всех сил). Then he pulled on his mittens, by means of his teeth (потом он натянул свои рукавицы посредством = при помощи своих зубов), and got upon his feet (и встал на ноги). He glanced down at first (сначала он посмотрел вниз; to glance — бросить взгляд; взглянуть мельком) in order to assure himself that he was really standing up (для того, чтобы убедиться, что он действительно стоит; up — указывает на переход в вертикальное положение), for the absence of sensation in his feet left him unrelated to the earth (ибо отсутствие ощущений в его ногах: «ступнях» лишало его связи: «оставляло его несвязанным» с землей). His erect position in itself (его выпрямленное положение само по себе) started to drive the webs of suspicion from the dog's mind (начало вытеснять паутину подозрений из собачьей головы: «ума»; to drive — везти; ехать; гнать); and when he spoke peremptorily (а когда он заговорил /с ней/ повелительным тоном), with the sound of whip-lashes in his voice (с нотками кнута в его голосе; sound — звук; смысл, суть, впечатление), the dog rendered its customary allegiance and came to him (собака показала свою привычную преданность и подошла к нему; to render — воздавать, отдавать; воспроизводить, изображать). As it came within reaching distance, the man lost his control (когда она подошла = оказалась в пределах /его/ досягаемости, человек потерял самообладание; to reach — протягивать; доставать; distance — расстояние). His arms flashed out to the dog (его руки метнулись к собаке; to flash — сверкать; быстро промелькнуть; мгновенно появиться; out — наружу; за пределы), and he experienced genuine surprise (и он испытал искреннее удивление) when he discovered that his hands could not clutch (когда обнаружил, что его руки не могли хватать; hand — рука /кисть/), that there was neither bend nor feeling in the fingers (что пальцы не сгибаются и не чувствуют: «что в пальцах /не/ было ни сгибания, ни ощущения»). He had forgotten for the moment that they were frozen (он забыл на мгновение, что они были обморожены) and that they were freezing more and more (и что они /все/ больше и больше замерзали). All this happened quickly (все это произошло быстро), and before the animal could get away (и прежде чем животное смогло убежать), he encircled its body with his arms (он схватил: «окружил» ее тело своими руками; arm — рука /от кисти до плеча/). He sat down in the snow, and in this fashion held the dog (он сел в снег и таким вот образом держал собаку; fashion — образ, манера; мода), while it snarled and whined and struggled (в то время как она рычала, скулила и вырывалась; to struggle — бороться; биться).

calmness [`kRmnIs], allegiance [q`lJG(q)ns], whine [waIn]

The man sat up in the snow for a moment and struggled for calmness. Then he pulled on his mittens, by means of his teeth, and got upon his feet. He glanced down at first in order to assure himself that he was really standing up, for the absence of sensation in his feet left him unrelated to the earth. His erect position in itself started to drive the webs of suspicion from the dog's mind; and when he spoke peremptorily, with the sound of whip-lashes in his voice, the dog rendered its customary allegiance and came to him. As it came within reaching distance, the man lost his control. His arms flashed out to the dog, and he experienced genuine surprise when he discovered that his hands could not clutch, that there was neither bend nor feeling in the fingers. He had forgotten for the moment that they were frozen and that they were freezing more and more. All this happened quickly, and before the animal could get away, he encircled its body with his arms. He sat down in the snow, and in this fashion held the dog, while it snarled and whined and struggled.

But it was all he could do (но это было все, /что/ он мог сделать), hold its body encircled in his arms and sit there (держать ее тело в своих руках и сидеть там; to encircle — окружать). He realized that he could not kill the dog (он понимал, что не сможет убить собаку). There was no way to do it (/не/ было никакого способа сделать это). With his helpless hands he could neither draw nor hold his sheath-knife (своими беспомощными руками он /не/ мог ни вытащить, ни держать свой охотничий нож; sheath-knife — нож в футляре; охотничий нож) nor throttle the animal (ни задушить животное). He released it (он отпустил собаку: «освободил ее»), and it plunged wildly away (и она, вне себя, бросилась прочь; wild — дикий; бешеный; необузданный), with tail between its legs, and still snarling (с поджатым хвостом: «с хвостом между своими лапами» и все еще рыча). It halted forty feet away and surveyed him curiously (она остановилась в сорока футах от /него/ и посмотрела /на/ него с любопытством; to survey — исследовать; рассматривать; обозревать), with ears sharply pricked forward (/ее/ уши /при этом/ резко торчали вперед). The man looked down at his hands in order to locate them (человек посмотрел вниз на свои кисти, с тем чтобы определить их местонахождение), and found them hanging on the ends of his arms (и обнаружил, /что/ они висят на концах его рук). It struck him as curious (это поразило его своей необычностью: «как необычное») that one should have to use his eyes (/то/, что приходится пользоваться глазами; one — один; также употребляется в неопределенно-личных предложениях) in order to find out where his hands were (с тем чтобы найти свои руки: «выяснить, где были его руки»). He began threshing his arms back and forth (он начал размахивать своими руками взад и вперед; to thresh = to thrash — молотить; колотить; ударять; метаться; arm — рука /от кисти до плеча/), beating the mittened hands against his sides (хлопая руками: «кистями», одетыми в рукавицы по своим бокам; to beat — бить, колотить). He did this for five minutes, violently (он делал это яростно в течение пяти минут), and his heart pumped enough blood up to the surface to put a stop to his shivering (и его сердце подкачало достаточно крови к коже: «поверхности», чтобы положить конец = остановить его дрожь). But no sensation was aroused in the hands (но никаких ощущений /не/ появилось: «/не/ было вызвано» в его кистях). He had an impression that they hung like weights on the ends of his arms (у него было /такое/ впечатление, что они висели на концах рук словно гири), but when he tried to run the impression down (но когда он попытался уловить, /что же/ это /было за/ ощущение: «впечатление»; to run down — настигнуть; разыскивать, находить), he could not find it (он /даже/ не смог найти его).
