***I*** A: Let’s go out to eat. B: That sounds like fun. A: Where do you want to go? B: Let me think a minute. A: I feel like Chinese. B: That sounds delicious. A: I know a good Chinese restaurant. B: How far away is it? A: It’s only 10 minutes from here. B: Do we need reservations? A: Oh, no. We can walk right in. B: Let’s go now. I’m hungry!
***II*** A: I love salads. B: Me too. A: I usually eat a simple salad. B: What do you put in it? A: Just lettuce, tomato, and celery. B: Is that all? A: I add some pepper and salt. B: I always put cheese in my salads. A: Yes, cheese is nice. B: What kind of dressing do you use? A: I pour lots of French dressing on top. B: Me too. French dressing is so delicious!
***III*** A: Do you see that Italian restaurant over there? It looks very nice. Let’s go in and have lunch. I hope the food will be delicious there. B: I know this restaurant. I was here last month with my friend. The Italian food is excellent here. They have a large choice of different national Italian dishes on the menu. But you also can order other European meals. A: Do we have to make reservations in advance? B: No, at lunch time it’s not necessary! A: I hope the service is also good there. B: Sure. The waiters always observe good manners. A: So, they really have a cosy atmosphere. I like that table in the corner. And what about you? B: So do I. A: And the music is so relaxing! B: Yes, we’ll have a nice chat and a nice lunch, I hope! A: Surely, we will! B: Let’s take our seats. Where is our menu? What do they offer for lunch today? A: For the main course I will take spaghetti with fish, shrimps and cheese. For dessert I like strawberry ice-cream and tea. B: And I will start with pasta with tomatoes, sweet basil and parmigiano. For afters I will take milkshake with fruits. Fruit looks very fresh and delicious. A: Would you like to drink tea or coffee? B: No, I won’t. Milkshake will be enough for me. A: Everything is delicious here! B: You haven’t tasted their pizza yet! A: I’ll necessarily come here again with my husband! B: You won’t regret it!
***IV*** A: This looks like a nice restaurant. B: Yeah, it is. I come here all the time. A: Let’s sit over there. B: OK. A: Can you pass me a menu please. B:Sure. What are you going to have to drink? A: I’m going to have a glass of beer. How about you? B: I think I’ll have a glass of wine. A: Do you want to order an appetizer first? B: Not really, maybe we can just order some bread. A: OK. What are you going to have to eat? B: I’m not sure. I haven’t decided yet. Can you recommend something? A: Sure, I’ve had the steak and the lobster before. They’re both very good. B: I think I’ll have the lobster. What are you going to have? A: I’m not that hungry. I think I’m just going to have a salad. B: I’m going to WC. When the waitress comes back, will you order for me? A: Sure. No problem.
***V***
A: What shall we have? A full course, I suppose? I’m awfully hungry. B: So am I. And I’m thirsty, too. A: Then let’s have a glass of mineral water first or some orange juice. B: I prefer orange juice with ice. A: Waiter! Iced orange juice and a glass of mineral water, please. Now let’s see the menu. And here is the wine card, too. How about some hard drinks? B: I wouldn’t mind having a brandy. A: So it’s one brandy. And it’s whisky and soda for me. What do you suggest for an appetizer? B: A salad would do, I think. A: And I think I’ll have shrimps. Now for the soup. B: Shall we have chicken broth? A: I’d better take tomato soup. By the way, they have a wide choice of fish and meat courses. B: I won’t have any fish course. I’ll just try the roast beef. A: And I don’t want any meat. I’d rather order salmon. Now what is there for dessert? What do you say to ice-cream? B: Well, I don’t mind. ***VI*** W: Order, gentlemen. What will you start with? A: Wait a minute! Can we have the menu? W: Here you are. A: There’s not much on the menu here. What do you recommend? W: You can have mixed salad for an appetizer. A: That’s good. And what kind of soup do you have? W: Chicken soup. Vegetable soup. Onion soup. A: Chicken soup, please. What meat dish will you recommend? W: We have beef steak, roast beef, fried chicken, turkey and pork chops. A: I’d like to have the roast beef and turkey for my friend. W: What’s for dessert? A: We’ll order dessert later. May we call you, say, in half an hour? W: Sure, you may.
***VII***
W: What would you like to drink? A: I think, I could do with a mug of beer. What kind of beer do you have? W: Lots of. I would recommend Carlsberg or Guinnes. A: Do they differ much? W: Sure. They are different. A: And the prices? W: Those are about the same. A: OK. I’ll try both.
***VIII***
A: Would you like a little wine? I ordered half a bottle to go with fish. B: Oh, with pleasure. What sort of wine? A: Dry and white. Please give me some bread. B: Here you are. Help yourself to the salad. A: Thanks. Just a little. It’s delicious, isn’t it? B: Yes, and the meat is overdone, I’m afraid. A: How much is the tip here in this restaurant? B: I don’t know for sure. Five per cent, I think. A: OK. I’ll call the waiter. May I have the bill, please? ***IX*** Waiter: Good evening. Two for dinner? Nick: Yes, that’s right. Waiter: Where would you like to sit? Nick: Could we have a table near the window, please? Waiter: Come with me, please (leading the guests to a table for two). Nick: Could we have the menu? Waiter: Certainly, here you are. Would you like something to drink while you're looking at the menu? Lucy: Mineral water for me, please. Waiter: And for you, sir? Nick: A glass of orange juice, please. Waiter: Sure, I'll bring your drinks in a minute. Nick: Would you like an appetizer? Oysters, lox, smoked herring, or avocado? Lucy: Does it come with the dinner? Nick: No, it's a la carte. Lucy: Let's see... the dinner includes salad, an entree, vegetables and potatoes as side dishes, a dessert, and coffee. That's more than enough. Nick: Okay. We'll order a dinner without an appetizer. What about the entree? What would you like - veal, roastbeef, steak or chicken? Lucy: We have chicken at home rather often. When we eat out, I'd like to get something we don't eat at home. As for me, I'd like to have a steak. Nick: So would I. Waiter: Are you ready to order now? Nick: Yes. Can we start with the salad? Waiter: Certainly, sir. What kind of dressing would you like? Nick: Just olive oil and vinegar for both of us. Waiter: And for your entree? Nick: Two steaks, please. Waiter: Rare, medium, or well done? Nick: Medium, please. Lucy: Is there a choice of vegetables and potatoes? Waiter: No, ma'm, I'm sorry. We serve a daily special. Today we have mashed potatoes. The vegetable of this day is asparagus. Nick: It's all right with me. What about you? Lucy: It's okay. Waiter: Would you like to see the wine list? Nick: We'd like a carafe of Chablis. Waiter: Fine. Will you order your dessert now? Nick: Can we order it later? Waiter: Of course. ***X*** Waiter: Good afternoon. Table for two? Dave: Yes, please. Waiter: Smoking or non-smoking? Sarah: Non-smoking. Waiter: Right this way.
They walk to a table. Dave and Sarah sit down and the waiter gives them menus. After 7 minutes, the waiter returns.
Waiter: Are you ready to order? Dave: I think so, but can I ask? What is Beef Stroganoff? Waiter: It’s beef cut into small pieces and served in a sour cream and white wine sauce. Dave: Ok, that sounds good. I’ll have that. Waiter: Excellent. And that comes with your choice of French fries, fried mushrooms, or rice. Dave: I’ll have rice. Waiter: Anything to start? Dave: I’ll have the French Onion soup. Waiter: OK. And what can I get you? Sarah: Is the Spaghetti and Meatballs very large? Waiter: Yes, it’s a big portion. Sarah: Oh, I’m not very hungry. Waiter: Then can I recommend the Chicken with Mushrooms? That comes with noodles, but it’s not too big. Sarah: Ok. I’ll take Chicken and Mushrooms. And a salad to start. Waiter: Very good. And what can I get you to drink? Dave: A Coke, please. Sarah:I’ll have orange juice. Waiter: Oh, I’m afraid we’re out of orange juice. But we have pear, apple, grape, and kiwi-banana. Sarah: Kiwi-banana? That sounds interesting. I’ll try that. Waiter:Excellent. I’ll be back with your drinks in a minute.
