And ever did his Soul tempt him with evil, and whisper of terrible things. Yet did it not prevail against him, so great was the power of his love.

And after the year was over, the Soul thought within himself, `I have tempted my master with evil, and his love is stronger than I am. I will tempt him now with good, and it may be that he will come with me.'

So he spake to the young Fisherman (тогда она заговорила с молодым Рыбаком) and said, `I have told thee of the joy of the world (я рассказала тебе о радостях мира), and thou hast turned a deaf ear to me (и ты не слушал меня: «ты повернул ко мне глухое ухо»; deaf — глухой, глуховатый). Suffer me now to tell thee (позволь мне теперь рассказать тебе; to suffer — страдать; позволять, дозволять) of the world's pain (о страданиях мира; pain — боль; страдание, огорчение, горе), and it may be that thou wilt hearken (и, может быть, это ты выслушаешь). For of a truth (по правде говоря), pain is the Lord of this world (страдание является Властителем этого мира), nor is there anyone who escapes from its net (и нет никого, кто может избежать его сетей; to escape — бежать /из заключения/; избежать /опасности/). There be some who lack raiment (есть такие, у которых нет одежды; to lack — испытывать недостаток, нуждаться, не иметь /чего-либо/), and others who lack bread (а другим не хватает хлеба). There be widows who sit in purple (есть вдовы, одетые в пурпурные /одежды/: «которые сидят в пурпуре») and widows who sit in rags (и вдовы в лохмотьях; rag — тряпка; отрепья, лохмотья).

deaf [def] hearken ['hQ:kqn] escape [I'skeIp] raiment ['reImqnt]

purple ['pq:p(q)l] rag [rxg]

So he spake to the young Fisherman and said, `I have told thee of the joy of the world, and thou hast turned a deaf ear to me. Suffer me now to tell thee of the world's pain, and it may be that thou wilt hearken. For of a truth, pain is the Lord of this world, nor is there anyone who escapes from its net. There be some who lack raiment, and others who lack bread. There be widows who sit in purple, and widows who sit in rags.

To and fro over the fens go the lepers (туда и сюда по болотам ходят прокаженные), and they are cruel to each other (и они жестоки друг к другу). The beggars go up and down on the highways (нищие/попрошайки ходят взад и вперед по большим дорогам), and their wallets are empty (и котомки их пустые; wallet — бумажник; дорожная сумка). Through the streets of the cities walks Famine (по улицам городов гуляет Голод; famine — голод /стихийное бедствие/), and the Plague sits at their gates (и у их ворот сидит Чума). Come, let us go forth (давай же, пойдем /в путь/) and mend these things (и исправим все эти вещи; to mend — чинить, штопать; улучшить, исправить), and make them not to be (и сделаем так, чтобы их больше не было). Wherefore should'st thou tarry here (зачем же тебе жить/сидеть здесь) calling to thy love (взывая к своей возлюбленной), seeing she comes not (видя, что она не приходит) to thy call (на твой зов; call — крик; зов, оклик)? And what is love (и что такое любовь), that thou should'st set this high store upon it (что ты так высоко ее ценишь; store — запас, резерв; значение, важность)?'

fen [fen] leper ['lepq] cruel ['kru:ql] beggar ['begq] famine ['fxmIn]

plague [pleIg]

To and fro over the fens go the lepers, and they are cruel to each other. The beggars go up and down on the highways, and their wallets are empty. Through the streets of the cities walks Famine, and the Plague sits at their gates. Come, let us go forth and mend these things, and make them not to be. Wherefore should'st thou tarry here calling to thy love, seeing she comes not to thy call? And what is love, that thou should'st set this high store upon it?'

But the young Fisherman answered it nought (но молодой Рыбак ничего ей не ответил), so great was the power of his love (так велика была сила его любви). And every morning he called to the Mermaid (и каждое утро он звал Русалочку), and every noon he called to her again (и каждый полдень он снова звал ее), and at night-time he spake her name (и ночью он произносил ее имя). Yet never did she rise out of the sea to meet him (и все же она ни разу не поднялась из моря ему навстречу), nor in any place of the sea could he find her (и ни в каком месте в море он не мог найти ее), though he sought for her in the rivers of the sea (хотя он и искал ее в морских реках/потоках; to seek (sought)), and in the valleys that are under the waves (и в долинах, что раскинулись под волнами), in the sea that the night makes purple (и в море, которое ночью становится пурпурным; to make smb., smth. + прилагательное — превращать, приводить в какое-либо состояние, делать каким-то), and in the sea that the dawn leaves grey (и в море, которое рассвет оставляет серым).

power ['paVq] sought [sO:t] valley ['vxlI]

But the young Fisherman answered it nought, so great was the power of his love. And every morning he called to the Mermaid, and every noon he called to her again, and at night-time he spake her name. Yet never did she rise out of the sea to meet him, nor in any place of the sea could he find her, though he sought for her in the rivers of the sea, and in the valleys that are under the waves, in the sea that the night makes purple, and in the sea that the dawn leaves grey.

And after the second year was over (после того, как закончился второй год), the Soul said to the young Fisherman at night-time (как-то ночью Душа сказала молодому Рыбаку), and as he sat in the wattled house alone (когда он в одиночестве сидел в /своем/ плетеном доме; to wattle — строить из прутьев; плести), `Lo! now I have tempted thee with evil (послушай, я уже искушала тебя злом), and I have tempted thee with good (и искушала тебя добром), and thy love is stronger than I am (и твоя любовь сильнее меня). Wherefore will I tempt thee no longer (поэтому я больше не буду искушать тебя), but I pray thee (но я молю тебя) to suffer me to enter thy heart (позволить мне войти в твое сердце), that I may be one with thee (чтобы я могла быть с тобой единым /целым/; one — один; единый, одинаковый) even as before (так же, как и раньше).'

`Surely thou mayest enter (конечно же, ты можешь войти),' said the young Fisherman, `for in the days (потому как в те дни) when with no heart thou didst go through the world (когда без сердца ты ходила по миру) thou must have much suffered (ты, должно быть, много страдала).'

pray [preI] even ['i:v(q)n] before [bI'fO:]

And after the second year was over, the Soul said to the young Fisherman at night-time, and as he sat in the wattled house alone, `Lo! now I have tempted thee with evil, and I have tempted thee with good, and thy love is stronger than I am. Wherefore will I tempt thee no longer, but I pray thee to suffer me to enter thy heart, that I may be one with thee even as before.'

`Surely thou mayest enter,' said the young Fisherman, `for in the days when with no heart thou didst go through the world thou must have much suffered.'

`Alas (увы)!' cried his Soul (закричала Душа), `I can find no place of entrance (я не могу найти входа: «места входа»), so compassed about with love is this heart of thine (настолько окружено любовью твое сердце; compass — компас; окружность, to compass — окружать).'

`Yet I would (все же мне бы хотелось) that I could help thee (чтобы я мог помочь тебе),' said the young Fisherman.

And as he spake (и, когда он говорил) there came a great cry of mourning from the sea (из моря послышался громкий: «сильный» крик печали; mourning — печать, горе, скорбь; траур), even the cry (именно такой крик) that men hear (который люди слышат) when one of the Sea-folk is dead (когда умирает один из Морских Обитателей; dead — мертвый, умерший). And the young Fisherman leapt up (и молодой Рыбак подскочил; to leap (leapt)), and left his wattled house (и оставил свой плетенный домик; to leave (left)), and ran down to the shore (и побежал к берегу; to run (ran, run)).

entrance ['entrqns] compass ['kAmpqs] mourning ['mO:nIN]

`Alas!' cried his Soul, `I can find no place of entrance, so compassed about with love is this heart of thine.'

`Yet I would that I could help thee,' said the young Fisherman.

And as he spake there came a great cry of mourning from the sea, even the cry that men hear when one of the Sea-folk is dead. And the young Fisherman leapt up, and left his wattled house, and ran down to the shore.

And the black waves came hurrying to the shore (и черные волны неслись к берегу; to hurry — спешить, торопиться), bearing with them a burden (принеся с собой какую-то ношу; burden — ноша, тяжесть, груз) that was whiter than silver (которая была белее, чем серебро). White as the surf it was (она была бела, как прибой = как пена), and like a flower (и, подобно цветку) it tossed on the waves (ее подбрасывало на волнах; to toss — бросать, кидать; подбрасывать). And the surf took it from the waves (и прибой принял: «взял» ее у волн; to take (took, taken)), and the foam took it from the surf (и пена приняла ее у прибоя), and the shore received it (и берег принял ее), and lying at his feet (и лежащим у его ног) the young Fisherman saw the body of the little Mermaid (молодой Рыбак увидел тело маленькой Русалочки; to see (saw, seen)). Dead at his feet it was lying (мертвое, у его ног оно лежало).

burden [bq:dn] surf [sq:f] foam [fqVm]

And the black waves came hurrying to the shore, bearing with them a burden that was whiter than silver. White as the surf it was, and like a flower it tossed on the waves. And the surf took it from the waves, and the foam took it from the surf, and the shore received it, and lying at his feet the young Fisherman saw the body of the little Mermaid. Dead at his feet it was lying.

Weeping as one smitten with pain (рыдая, как человек, охваченный/убитый горем; to smite (smote, smitten) — ударять, бить; поражать) he flung himself down beside it (он бросился ниц рядом с ним; to fling (flung)), and he kissed the cold red of the mouth (и целовал ее холодный красный рот: «холодную красноту рта»), and toyed with the wet amber of the hair (и перебирал ее влажные янтарные волосы; to toy — вертеть в руках). He flung himself down beside it on the sand (он бросился рядом с ним на песок), weeping as one trembling with joy (рыдая, как человек, дрожащий от радости), and in his brown arms (и своими смуглыми руками; brown — коричневый; смуглый, загорелый) he held it to his breast (он прижал ее к своей груди; to hold (held) — держать). Cold were the lips (холодны были ее уста), yet he kissed them (но он целовал их). Salt was the honey of the hair (солон был мед ее волос: «солью был мед волос»), yet he tasted it with a bitter joy (и все же он вкушал его с горькой радостью; to taste — пробовать, отведать). He kissed the closed eyelids (он целовал закрытые веки), and the wild spray that lay upon their cups (и соленые брызги, что лежали на них; to lie (lay, lain); cup — чашечка /цветка/) was less salt (были менее солеными) than his tears (чем его слезы).

smitten ['smIt(q)n] toy [tOI] honey ['hAnI] eyelid ['aIlId]

Weeping as one smitten with pain he flung himself down beside it, and he kissed the cold red of the mouth, and toyed with the wet amber of the hair. He flung himself down beside it on the sand, weeping as one trembling with joy, and in his brown arms he held it to his breast. Cold were the lips, yet he kissed them. Salt was the honey of the hair, yet he tasted it with a bitter joy. He kissed the closed eyelids, and the wild spray that lay upon their cups was less salt than his tears.

And to the dead thing he made confession (и этому мертвому созданию он признался; confession — признание /своей вины/). Into the shells of its ears (и в раковины ее ушей: «ушей этого создания») he poured the harsh wine of his tale (он влил терпкое вино своей истории; harsh — грубый, жесткий; резкий, неприятный). He put the little hands round his neck (он обвил ее маленькими ручками свою шею: «он положил ее маленькие руки вокруг своей шеи»), and with his fingers (и своими пальцами) he touched the thin reed of the throat (он коснулся тонкой тростинки ее шеи). Bitter, bitter was his joy (горькой, горькой была его радость), and full of strange gladness was his pain (и полной странной радости была его печаль).

confession [kqn'feS(q)n] pour [pO:] throat [TrqVt]

And to the dead thing he made confession. Into the shells of its ears he poured the harsh wine of his tale. He put the little hands round his neck, and with his fingers he touched the thin reed of the throat. Bitter, bitter was his joy, and full of strange gladness was his pain.

The black sea came nearer (черное море подошло ближе), and the white foam moaned like a leper (и белая пена стонала, как прокаженный). With white claws of foam (белыми когтями пены) the sea grabbled at the shore (море хваталось за берег; to grabble — нащупывать; хватать). From the palace of the Sea-King (из дворца Морского Царя) came the cry of mourning again (снова раздался вопль печали/скорби), and far out upon the sea (и далеко в море) the great Tritons blew hoarsely upon their horns (большие Тритоны хрипло трубили в свои раковины: «рожки»; to blow (blew, blown) — дуть, веять /о ветре/; играть на духовом инструменте; horn — рог; духовой музыкальный инструмент).

`Flee away (беги прочь), said his Soul, `for ever doth the sea come nigher (потому что море подходит все ближе; nigh — близко, рядом), and if thou tarriest (и если ты замешкаешься) it will slay thee (оно убьет тебя). Flee away (беги прочь), for I am afraid (потому что я боюсь), seeing that thy heart is closed against me (видя, что твое сердце закрыто для меня) by reason of the greatness of thy love (по причине величия/силы твоей любви). Flee away to a place of safety (беги прочь, в безопасное место; safe — безопасный). Surely thou wilt not send me without a heart (ты конечно же не отправишь меня без сердца) into another world (в мир иной)?'

The black sea came nearer, and the white foam moaned like a leper. With white claws of foam the sea grabbled at the shore. From the palace of the Sea-King came the cry of mourning again, and far out upon the sea the great Tritons blew hoarsely upon their horns.

`Flee away, said his Soul, `for ever doth the sea come nigher, and if thou tarriest it will slay thee. Flee away, for I am afraid, seeing that thy heart is closed against me by reason of the greatness of thy love. Flee away to a place of safety. Surely thou wilt not send me without a heart into another world?'

But the young Fisherman listened not to his Soul (но молодой Рыбак не слушал своей Души), but called on the little Mermaid (он взывал к маленькой Русалочке) and said, `Love is better than wisdom (любовь лучше мудрости), and more precious than riches (и гораздо драгоценнее, чем /все/ богатства), and fairer than the feet of the daughters of men (и прекраснее, чем ноги у дочерей человеческих). The fires cannot destroy it (пламя/огонь не могут разрушить ее), nor can the waters quench it (и вода не может уничтожить ее; to quench — гасить, тушить; подавлять, уничтожать /чувства/). I called on thee at dawn (я звал тебе на рассвете), and thou didst not come to my call (и ты не пришла на мой зов). The moon heard thy name (луна слышала имя твое; to hear (herd)), yet hadst thou no heed of me (хотя ты не обращала на меня внимания; hadst thou = you had, heed — внимание, забота). For evilly had I left thee (ибо злодейски я оставил тебя; to leave (left)), and to my own hurt (и к своему собственному вреду) had I wandered away (ушел я прочь; to wander — бродить, странствовать). Yet ever did thy love abide with me (но все же твоя любовь всегда пребывала со мною), and ever was it strong (и всегда она была сильна), nor did aught prevail against it (и ничто не восторжествовало над нею; aught — нечто, кое-что; что-нибудь), though I have looked upon evil (хотя я смотрел и на злое) and looked upon good (и смотрел на хорошее). And now that thou art dead (а теперь, когда ты мертва; thou art = you are), surely I will die with thee also (я, конечно, тоже умру с тобою).'

But the young Fisherman listened not to his Soul, but called on the little Mermaid and said, `Love is better than wisdom, and more precious than riches, and fairer than the feet of the daughters of men. The fires cannot destroy it, nor can the waters quench it. I called on thee at dawn, and thou didst not come to my call. The moon heard thy name, yet hadst thou no heed of me. For evilly had I left thee, and to my own hurt had I wandered away. Yet ever did thy love abide with me, and ever was it strong, nor did aught prevail against it, though I have looked upon evil and looked upon good. And now that thou art dead, surely I will die with thee also.'

And his Soul besought him to depart (и его Душа умоляла его уйти; to depart — отбывать; уходить, покидать), but he would not (но он не /ушел/), so great was his love (настолько велика была его любовь). And the sea came nearer (и море подошло ближе; to come (came, come)), and sought to cover him with its waves (и пыталось накрыть его своими волнами; to seek (sought)), and when he knew (и когда он понял; to know (knew, known) — знать; осознавать, понимать) that the end was at hand (что конец близок; hand — рука, at hand — близко, рядом, под рукой) he kissed with mad lips (он целовал своими неистовыми губами; mad — сумасшедший; бешеный, неистовый) the cold lips of the Mermaid (холодные губы Русалочки) and the heart that was within him brake (и сердце, что было внутри /него/, разбилось = разорвалось; to break (broke, уст. brake, broken) — ломать, разбивать, разрывать). And as through the fulness of his love (и, когда от полноты его любви; through — через, сквозь; по причине, благодаря) his heart did break (разорвалось его сердце), the Soul found an entrance and entered in (Душа нашла вход и вошла в него; to find (found)), and was one with him even as before (и стала с ним единым /целым/, также, как и раньше). And the sea covered the young Fisherman (и море накрыло молодого Рыбака) with its waves (своими волнами).

depart [di:'pQ:t] fulness ['fVlnIs] within [wI'DIn]

And his Soul besought him to depart, but he would not, so great was his love. And the sea came nearer, and sought to cover him with its waves, and when he knew that the end was at hand he kissed with mad lips the cold lips of the Mermaid and the heart that was within him brake. And as through the fulness of his love his heart did break, the Soul found an entrance and entered in, and was one with him even as before. And the sea covered the young Fisherman with its waves.

And in the morning (а утром) the Priest went forth to bless the sea (вышел Священник, чтобы благословить/перекрестить море), for it had been troubled (потому что оно накануне взбушевалось: «взволновалось»). And with him went the monks (и с ним шли монахи) and the musicians (и музыканты = певчие), and the candle-bearers (и служки со свечами: «и носильщики свечей»; to bear — переносить; носить, нести), and the swingers of censers (и служки с кадильницами: «и те, кто размахивают кадильницами»; to swing — качать, колебать; раскачивать, размахивать), and a great company (и многочисленное общество /молящихся/; company — общество, компания).

And in the morning the Priest went forth to bless the sea, for it had been troubled. And with him went the monks and the musicians, and the candle-bearers, and the swingers of censers, and a great company.

And when the Priest reached the shore (и, когда Священник пришел к берегу) he saw the young Fisherman (он увидел молодого Рыбака) lying drowned in the surf (который лежал в прибое, утонувший; to lie (lay, lain), to drown — тонуть), and clasped in his arms (и сжатым в его объятиях; to clasp — застегивать /на пряжку/; сжимать, обнимать) was the body of the little Mermaid (было тело маленькой Русалочки). And he drew back frowning (и он отступил назад, нахмурившись; to draw (drew, drawn)), and having made the sign of the cross (и, осенив себя крестным знамением), he cried aloud (он громко воскликнул) and said, `I will not bless the sea (я не буду благословлять ни море) nor anything that is in it (ни что, что в нем). Accursed be the Sea-folk (будь прокляты Морские Обитатели), and accursed be all they (и будут прокляты все те) who traffic with them (кто имеют с ними дело; to traffic — торговать; иметь дело). And as for him (а что касается его) who for love's sake forsook God (который ради любви отказался от Бога; to forsake (forsook, forsaken) — оставлять, покидать; отказываться от чего-либо), and so lieth here (и поэтому лежит здесь) with his leman (со своей возлюбленной) slain by God's judgment (умерщвленный Божьим судом; judgment — слушание дела в суде; приговор, решение суда), take up his body (поднимите его тело) and the body of his leman (и тело его возлюбленной), and bury them in the corner of the Field of the Fullers (и схороните их в углу Поля Сукновалов = т.е. за пределами кладбища; fuller — валяльщик, сукновал, fuller’s field — поле сукновалов — площадка, на которой было все необходимое для работы сукновалов: земля сукновалов (fuller's earth) — особая глина и мыло сукновалов (fuller's soap) — щелочное мыло из растительной золы; сравн. potter’s field — кладбище для бедняков и бродяг), and set no mark above them (и не устанавливайте над ними никакого знака; mark — знак; метка, пометка), nor sign of any kind (вообще никакого знака; sign — признак, примета; вывеска, указатель; kind — сорт, класс, разряд; род, вид), that none may know (чтобы никто не мог узнать) the place of their resting (того места, где они покоятся). For accursed were they in their lives (ибо и при их жизни были они прокляты), and accursed shall they be (и будут они прокляты) in their deaths also (также и в /их/ смерти).'

And when the Priest reached the shore he saw the young Fisherman lying drowned in the surf, and clasped in his arms was the body of the little Mermaid. And he drew back frowning, and having made the sign of the cross, he cried aloud and said, `I will not bless the sea nor anything that is in it. Accursed be the Sea-folk, and accursed be all they who traffic with them. And as for him who for love's sake forsook God, and so lieth here with his leman slain by God's judgment, take up his body and the body of his leman, and bury them in the corner of the Field of the Fullers, and set no mark above them, nor sign of any kind, that none may know the place of their resting. For accursed were they in their lives, and accursed shall they be in their deaths also.'

And the people did (и люди сделали так) as he commanded them (как он приказал им), and in the corner of the Field of the Fullers (и в уголке Поля Сукновалов), where no sweet herbs grew (где не росли никакие душистые травы/растения; sweet — сладкий; душистый), they dug a deep pit (они вырыли глубокую яму = могилу; to dig (dug) — копать, рыть), and laid the dead things within it (и положили в нее мертвые создания = тела; to lay (laid)).

And when the third year was over (а когда прошло: «закончилось» три года), and on a day that was a holy day (в день церковного праздника; holy — святой, священный), the Priest went up to the chapel (Священник отправился в часовню; to go (went, gone)), that he might show to the people (чтобы показать людям) the wounds of the Lord (раны Господа), and speak to them (и поговорить с ними) about the wrath of God (о гневе Господнем).
