But his Soul answered (но его Душа ответила), `Nay, but let us tarry (нет, но давай остановимся /в городе/; to tarry — пребывать, останавливаться), for the night is dark (потому как ночь темная) and there will be robbers on the way (а на дороге будут разбойники; robber — грабитель, разбойник, вор).'

So they entered in and passed through the streets, but nowhere could the young Fisherman find the river or the inn that stood by its side. And the people of the city looked curiously at him, and he grew afraid and said to his Soul, `Let us go hence, for she who dances with white feet is not here.'

But his Soul answered, `Nay, but let us tarry, for the night is dark and there will be robbers on the way.'

And the young Fisherman answered him (и молодой Рыбак ответил ему), `I can find no inn in this city (я не могу найти в этом городе ни одного постоялого двора), nor have I any kinsman (и нет у меня ни одного родственника) who might give me shelter (который мог бы дать мне кров).'

`Are we not all kinsmen (разве мы все не родственники)?' said the merchant (сказал купец). `And did not one God make us (и не один ли Бог создал нас)? So he sat him down in the market-place and rested, and after a time there went by a hooded merchant who had a cloak of cloth of Tartary, and bore a lantern of pierced horn at the end of a jointed reed. And the merchant said to him, `Why dost thou sit in the market-place, seeing that the booths are closed and the bales corded?'

And the young Fisherman answered him, `I can find no inn in this city, nor have I any kinsman who might give me shelter.'

`Are we not all kinsmen?' said the merchant. `And did not one God make us? Therefore come with me, for I have a guest-chamber.'

 

So the young Fisherman rose up (тогда молодой Рыбак поднялся /на ноги/; to rise (rose, risen)) and followed the merchant to his house (и последовал за купцом в его дом). And when he had passed through a garden of pomegranates and entered into the house, the merchant brought him rose-water in a copper dish that he might wash his hands, and ripe melons that he might quench his thirst, and set a bowl of rice and a piece of roasted kid before him.

And after that he had finished, the merchant led him to the guest-chamber, bade him sleep and be at rest. And the young Fisherman gave him thanks, and kissed the ring that was on his hand, and flung himself down on the carpets of dyed goat's-hair. And when he had covered himself with a covering of black lambs-wool he fell asleep.

 

And three hours before dawn (и за три часа до рассвета), and while it was still night (пока все еще была ночь), his Soul waked him (его Душа разбудила его; to wake — просыпаться; будить), and said to him (и сказала ему), `Rise up (вставай) and go to the room of the merchant (и иди в комнату купца), even to the room in which he sleepeth (прямо в комнату, в которой он спит), and slay him (и убей его), and take from him his gold (и забери у него его золото), for we have need of it (потому что мы нуждаемся в нем).'

And the young Fisherman rose up (и молодой Рыбак поднялся) and crept towards the room of the merchant (и прокрался в комнату купца; to creep (crept) — ползать; красться), and over the feet of the merchant (и в ногах купца) there was lying a curved sword (лежал кривой меч; to lie (lay, lain); curve — кривая линия; кривизна, изогнутость), and the tray by the side of the merchant (и на подносе рядом с купцом; side — стена; место рядом) held nine purses of gold (было девять кошелей с золотом; to hold (held) — держать; вмещать). And the young Fisherman rose up and crept towards the room of the merchant, and over the feet of the merchant there was lying a curved sword, and the tray by the side of the merchant held nine purses of gold. And he reached out his hand and touched the sword, and when he touched it the merchant started and awoke, and leaping up seized himself the sword and cried to the young Fisherman, `Dost thou return evil for good, and pay with the shedding of blood for the kindness that I have shown thee?'

 

And his Soul said to the young Fisherman (и его Душа сказала молодому Рыбаку), `Strike him (ударь его),' and he struck him so (и он ударил его так; to strike (struck, stricken)) that he swooned (что он упал замертво: «упал в обморок»), and he seized then the nine purses of gold (и тогда он схватил девять кошелей золота), and fled hastily through the garden of pomegranates (и поспешно понесся по гранатовому саду; to flee (fled) — бежать, спасаться бегством), and set his face to the star (и обратил свое лицо к звезде) that is the star of morning (то была Утренняя Звезда /Венера/).

And when they had gone a league from the city (и когда они отошли на целое лье от города), the young Fisherman beat his breast (молодой Рыбак ударил себя в грудь; to beat (beat, beaten)), and said to his Soul (и сказал своей Душе), `Why didst thou bid me slay the merchant (почему ты приказала мне убить купца; to bade (bid, bidden)) and take his gold (и забрать его золото)? Surely thou art evil (ты, несомненно, злая).'

But his Soul answered him (но его Душа ответила ему), `Be at peace (будь спокоен), be at peace.'

And when they had gone a league from the city, the young Fisherman beat his breast, and said to his Soul, `Why didst thou bid me slay the merchant and take his gold? Surely thou art evil.'

But his Soul answered him, `Be at peace, be at peace.'

 

`Nay (нет),' cried the young Fisherman (закричал молодой Рыбак), `I may not be at peace (я не могу быть спокоен), for all that thou hast made me to do (потому что все, что ты заставила меня сделать) I hate (мне ненавистно: «я ненавижу»). Thee also I hate (тебя я тоже ненавижу), and I bid thee tell me (и прошу тебя сказать мне) wherefore thou hast wrought with me (почему ты поступила со мною; to work (worked, wrought) — работать; действовать, поступать) in this wise (таким образом; wise — способ).'

And his Soul answered him (и его Душа ответила ему), `When thou didst send me forth (когда ты отослал меня) into the world (в мир) thou gavest me no heart (ты не дал мне сердца), so I learned to do all these things (поэтому я научилась делать все эти вещи = поступать так) and love them (и полюбила их).'

`Nay,' cried the young Fisherman, `I may not be at peace, for all that thou hast made me to do I hate. Thee also I hate, and I bid thee tell me wherefore thou hast wrought with me in this wise.'

And his Soul answered him, `When thou didst send me forth into the world thou gavest me no heart, so I learned to do all these things and love them.'

 

`What sayest thou (что ты говоришь)?' murmured the young Fisherman (прошептал молодой Рыбак).

`Thou knowest (ты знаешь),' answered his Soul (ответила его Душа), `thou knowest it well (ты хорошо это знаешь). Hast thou forgotten (разве ты забыл; to forget (forgot, forgotten)) that thou gavest me no heart (что ты не дал мне сердца)? I trow not (я полагаю, что нет; trow — арх. верить; полагать, думать). And so trouble not thyself nor me (поэтому не тревожься сам, и не тревожь меня), but be at peace (а будь спокоен), for there is no pain (потому что нет таких страданий; pain — боль; страдание, огорчение) that thou shalt not give away (которых ты не даруешь/не раздашь), nor any pleasure (и нет таких удовольствий/наслаждений) that thou shalt not receive (которых ты не получишь).'

Come, let us go to another city, and make merry, for we have nine purses of gold.'

 

But the young Fisherman took the nine purses of gold (но молодой Рыбак взял эти девять кошелей с золотом; to take (took, taken)), and flung them down (и бросил их наземь; to fling (flung)), and trampled on them (и растоптал их).

`Nay,' he cried, `but I will have nought to do with thee (я не хочу иметь с тобой никакого дела), nor will I journey with thee anywhere (и никуда не пойду /путешествовать/ с тобой), but even as I sent thee away before (и точно также, как я отослал/прогнал тебя прежде), so will I send thee away now (так же я отошлю/прогоню тебя и сейчас), for thou hast brought me no good (потому что ты не принесла мне ничего хорошего; to bring (brought)).'
