ORDERING SPARE PARTS AND GENERAL SUPPLIES TEXT WORDS AND EXPRESSIONS
TEXT When a ship has пш out of some spare parts or is short of supplies the Chief Engineer sends a telex to the agent at the next port of call in which he indicates the spares the ship needs and the quantity required. This telex is based on the written request prepared by the fourth, third and second engineers. As a rule the following items may be included into the fourth engineer's written request: a) impellers for the boiler circulating pump; b) packings material (rubber, klingirit, paranit), c) water and steam packings; d) cocks for the sanitary system; e) refractory bricks, clay (for a boiler furnace); f) thermostat; g) atomizers for boiler burner nozzles; h) ignition electrodes; i)bearings; k) band brakes for winches; 1) oil of different grades, ra) antifouling compound marine. n) chemicals for water analysis laboratory: silver, sulphuric and hydrochloric acids, etc. The third engineer orders the following equipment: b) injector for the diesei generator, c) piston rings; d) bearings with babbit soldering; e) air inlet valves; f) exhaust and inlet valves; g) a cylinder liner; h) oil pump drive gears; i) cylinder covers. As the second engineer is in charge of the main engine his request may include the following items; a) main engine piston rings; b) pistons, cylinder liners; c) cylinder covers; d) exhaust valves; e) oil for the main engine; f) tools for the ship's lathe; g) copper and steel wire of different diameter; h) ball bearings; i) spares for pumps; k) cleaning rags; 1) cast iron, bronze, steel and other metals for making spares. On receipt of the telex the agent sends a reply containing all the necessary information about the availability, price and terms of delivery of the spares required. On the ship's arrival at the port the Chief Engineer sometimes has to meet with the shipchandler personaly to show him the samples of the spares he needs and ю discuss some problems. As a result of the talks several amendments may be made about the quantity, quality, spares with the same characteristics but from another company, parts of other modification. A special document called Delivery List is prepared and considered to be an official pass at the port territory. Some time later the shipchandler brings the bill which must be signed by the Captain Chief Engineer and storeman.
