But the Star-Child stirred not from his place, but shut the doors of his heart against her, nor was there any sound heard save the sound of the woman weeping for pain.

And at last he spoke to her, and his voice was hard and bitter. 'If in very truth thou art my mother,' he said, 'it had been better hadst thou stayed away, and not come here to bring me to shame, seeing that I thought I was the child of some Star, and not a beggar's child, as thou tellest me that I am. Therefore get thee hence, and let me see thee no more.'

 

'Alas! my son (увы, сын мой),' she cried, 'wilt thou not kiss me (не поцелуешь ли ты меня; wilt thou = will you) before I go (перед тем, как я уйду)? For I have suffered much (я ведь так настрадалась; to suffer — страдать, испытывать) to find thee (чтобы найти тебя).'

And the Linnet answered (и Коноплянка ответила), 'Thou hast clipt my wings (ты подрезал мои крылья; thou hast clipt = you have clipped, to clip — стричь, подрезать) for thy pleasure (для своего удовольствия). How should I fly (как я могу /теперь/ летать)?'

And to the little Squirrel (и маленькой Белочке) who lived in the fir-tree (которая жила на сосне), and was lonely (и была совсем одна; lonely — одинокий), he said, 'Where is my mother (где моя мать)?'

And the Squirrel answered (и Белочка ответила), 'Thou hast slain mine (ты убил мою /мать/; thou hast = you have, to slay (slew, slain) — убивать, умерщвлять). Dost thou seek to slay thine also (ты ищешь свою мать, чтобы и ее убить; dost thou = do you, thine = yours)?'

And another (и другой), who held a yellow banner in his hand (который держал в руке желтое знамя; to hold (held) — держать), said to him, 'Who is thy mother (кто твоя мать), and wherefore art thou seeking for her (и почему ты ищешь ее)?'

And he answered (и он ответил), 'My mother is a beggar (моя мать — нищенка) even as I am (точно также, как и я), and I have treated her evilly (и я очень плохо обошелся с ней; to treat — обращаться, обходиться), and I pray ye (и умоляю вас) to suffer me to pass (позволить мне пройти) that she may give me her forgiveness (так, что она, может быть, даст мне свое прощение = простит меня), if it be that she tarrieth in this city (если случилось так, что она живет в этом городе; to tarry — пребывать, останавливаться, жить).' And an old and evil-visaged man (и один старик, со злобным лицом; - visaged — как компонент сложных слов — имеющий какое-то лицо или вид, visage — лицо, внешний вид) who was passing by (который проходил мимо) called out (вызвался), and said, 'I will buy him for that price (я куплю его за эту цену),' and, when he had paid the price (и, когда он заплатил деньги: «цену»), he took the Star-Child by the hand (он взял Звездного Мальчика за руку) and led him into the city (и повел его в город; to lead (led) — вести, показывать путь).

One is of white gold (одна /монета/ из белого золота), and another is of yellow gold (другая из желтого золота), and the gold of the third one is red (а третья — из красного/червонного: «а золото третьей монеты красное»). And the Star-Child went out of the gate of the city (и Звездный Мальчик вышел за ворота города), and came to the wood (и пришел в тот лес) of which the Magician had spoken to him (о котором ему говорил Волшебник; to speak (spoke, spoken)).

Now this wood was very fair to look at from without (а снаружи этот лес выглядел очень красивым/светлым: «на этот лес было очень приятно смотреть снаружи»; fair — честный; чистый, ясный, красивый), and seemed full of singing birds (и казался наполненным поющими птицами; full — полный; наполненный) and of sweet-scented flowers (и благоухающими цветами; sweet — сладкий, свежий, душистый, scent — запах, аромат), and the Star-Child entered it gladly (и Звездный Мальчик радостно вошел в него). Yet did its beauty profit him little (но красота леса: «его красота» принесла ему мало пользы; to profit — приносить пользу, быть полезным), for wherever he went (ибо, куда бы он ни пошел) harsh briars and thorns (колючие шиповники и терновники; harsh — грубый, резкий; thorn — колючка, колючее растение) shot up from the ground (вырастали из земли; to shoot (shot) up — вздыматься, взмывать) and encompassed him (и окружали/обступали его), and evil nettles stung him (и жгучая: «злая» крапива жгла его; to sting (stung) — жалить, жечь), and the thistle pierced him (и чертополох колол его; to pierce — пронзать, протыкать) with her daggers (своими /колючками/-кинжалами), so that he was in sore distress (так что он испытывал сильнейшую/острую боль; sore — болезненный; крайний, острый; distress — горе, беда; сильное недомогание, боль). Nor could he anywhere find (и он не мог нигде найти) the piece of white gold (монету из белого золота) of which the Magician had spoken (о которой сказал Волшебник), though he sought for it (хотя он и искал ее; to seek (sought)) from morn to noon (с утра до полудня), and from noon to sunset (и с полудня до заката солнца).
