So he came near and threw stones at her, and mocked her, and she looked at him with terror in her eyes, nor did she move her gaze from him.

And the Star-Child grew red with anger (и Звездный Ребенок покраснел от гнева; to grow (grew, grown) — расти; становиться, делаться), and stamped his foot upon the ground (и топнул ногой о землю), and said, 'Who art thou to question me (кто ты такой, чтобы задавать мне вопросы о том; art thou = are you) what I do (что я делаю)? I am no son of thine (я не твой сын; thine = yours) to do thy bidding (чтобы исполнять твои приказания; bidding — предложение цены; приказание, распоряжение; thy = your).'

And the Star-Child grew red with anger, and stamped his foot upon the ground, and said, 'Who art thou to question me what I do? I am no son of thine to do thy bidding.'

 

'Thou speakest truly (верно ты говоришь; speakest = speak),' answered the Wood-cutter (ответил Дровосек), 'yet did I show thee pity (и все же я пожалел: «проявил к тебе сострадание»; to show — показывать; проявлять, обнаруживать) when I found thee in the forest (когда я нашел тебя в лесу).'

And when the woman heard these words (и когда та женщина услышала эти слова; to hear (heard)) she gave a loud cry (и громко закричала; to give (gave, given), cry — крик), and fell into a swoon (и упала в обморок; to fall (fell, fallen)). And when the woman heard these words she gave a loud cry, and fell into a swoon. And the Woodcutter carried her to his own house, and his wife had care of her, and when she rose up from the swoon into which she had fallen, they set meat and drink before her, and bade her have comfort.

'And what signs didst thou find with him?' she cried. 'Bare he not upon his neck a chain of amber? Was not round him a cloak of gold tissue broidered with stars?'

 

'Truly (верно),' answered the Woodcutter (ответил Дровосек), 'it was even as thou sayest (все было точно так, как вы говорите; thou sayest = you say).' And he took the cloak and the amber chain (и он достал: «взял» плащ и янтарную цепочку) from the chest (из сундука) where they lay (где они лежали; to lie (lay, lain)), and showed them to her (и показал их ей).

So he ran in, filled with wonder and great gladness. But when he saw her who was waiting there, he laughed scornfully and said, 'Why, where is my mother? For I see none here but this vile beggar-woman.'

And the woman answered him, 'I am thy mother.'

 

'Thou art mad to say so (ты сумасшедшая, раз так говоришь),' cried the Star-Child angrily (воскликнул сердито Звездный Мальчик). 'The robbers stole thee from me, and left thee to die,' she murmured, 'but I recognised thee when I saw thee, and the signs also have I recognised, the cloak of golden tissue and the amber chain. Therefore I pray thee come with me, for over the whole world have I wandered in search of thee. Come with me, my son, for I have need of thy love.'

 

But the Star-Child stirred not from his place (но Звездный Мальчик не двинулся со своего места), but shut the doors of his heart against her (но закрыл перед ней двери своего сердца; to shut (shut) — затворять, закрывать), nor was there any sound heard (и не было слышно ни одного звука; to hear (heard)) save the sound of the woman (за исключением рыданий: «звуков» женщины) weeping for pain (плакавшей от боли).
