3. Course goal and objectives
Course goals:to tailor the English Language program to the students’ future careers and help students communicate successfully in English in a business environment.
Course objectives:
By the end of the course the students will improve their skills of:
- listening: comprehension and note-taking of authentic speech in business contexts;
- speaking: discussion of business-related issues, making presentations;
- reading: skimming and scanning of authentic business-related texts;
- writing: keeping up business correspondence (formal letter);
- life-long learning, leadership, critical thinking, decision-making, problem solving and team work.

5. Course description:
IYA 1103 Business Englishis aimed at the formation and development of listening, speaking, reading and writing skills on business-related topics, and development of such social skills as telephoning, making presentations, socializing and dealing with numbers. The language training is communicative, interactive, student-centered, outcome-oriented and heavily reliant on students' self-study work. The latter is organized as TSIS (business correspondence and project) and SIS (MEG and Practice File self-check exercises).
6. Academic policy
Students are forbidden to:
- come to class without a textbook or a printout of an e-book from dl.iitu.kz.
A student without a textbook gets a “0” mark for class participation;
- submit any tasks after the deadline. Late submissions shall be downgraded;
- cheat. Plagiarized papers shall not be graded;
- be late for classes. Three times' tardy amounts to one absence;
- retake any tests, unless there is a valid reason for missing them;
- use mobile phones in class;
- chew gum in class.
Students should always
- be appropriately dressed (formal/semi- formal styles are acceptable);
- show consideration for and mutual support of teachers and other students;
- let the teacher know of any problems arising in connection with English studies.
