Instincts
Storchevoy M. A. Corporate Social Responsibility. 2013 Topic 3. Where Do Norms Come From?
A New Evolutionary Model of Man Instincts
The instincts determine: 1) fundamental goals (needs, tastes ….) 2) low-level programs (“in case of danger – run” etc.)
It is like HARDWARE in computer – all basic functions are embedded in chips and can not be changed during the life of the “organism”.
All emotions of man – fear, anger, sympathy etc. – are programmed at this biological level.
Intellect
Rational choice
Culture 1. Supplements instincts 2. Reinforces instincts 3. Blocks instincts
Instincts
1. Set fundamental goals 2. Set “low-level” programs
Storchevoy M. A. Corporate Social Responsibility. 2013 Topic 3. Where Do Norms Come From?
A New Evolutionary Model of Man Culture
The second level of “choice” – culture (various norms which every human gets during childhood and socialization)
They serve three functions: 1) Supplement instincts 2) Reinforce instincts 3) Block instincts
In other words, they ADAPT instincts to a certain (first of all, social) environment
This is like SOFTWARE in computer – it is downloaded into the hardware and adapts it capabilities to certain needs.
