The Modal Verb Would (Will) Will and would are considered to be the forms of the same verb. Its original meaning is volition. However, in some of their meanings the use of willis equal only to would which denotes an actual fact in the past; in other meanings will is found alongside would which expresses unreality in the present or serves as a more polite form of will. The modal verb would has a short form ‘d. Negatives,questions and short answers are formed in the usual way. · This colour wouldn’t suit me, would it? · Would you buy it? – No, I wouldn’t. Compare these two replies. · We’re going to have a barbecue. – Oh, that’ll be nice (‘ll=will) · We’re thinking of having a barbecue. – Oh, that’d be nice (‘d=would) Here will refers to a future situation, a barbecue which will definitely take place, while would refers to a possible situation, a barbecue may or may not take place. With would, there is often a phrase or clause explaining the situation that the speaker is imagining. · You wouldn’t be much use in a crisis. · No one would pay taxes if they didn’t have to. Will is used to express: - future · The post will be here soon. - supposition about present or future situations. · The letter will be somewhere in a file. Will + Perfect Infinitive expresses certainty about the past. · We can’t go and see them now. They will have gone to bed.
Would is used to express: - a possible situation · A holiday would be great - looking forward from the past · No one knew what would happen next. - something that was to be expected. In Russian it is rendered as этого и следовало ожидать. · Paula is very brave. – Yes, she would be brave. Both Will and Would are used to express: 1. habitual or recurrent action. In addition to indicating a habitual action, will (would) in this case implies willingness, personal interest on the part of the doer
Moreover, would is used with the same meaning as used to. It refers to repeated actions and events in the past.
