Ukrainians in different times demonstrated their highest intellectual level in numerous branches of science, technology and arts. World-famous are the names of Ukrainian hetmans Dmytro Vyshnevetskyi, Severyn Nalyvaiko, Petro Sagaidachnyi, Pylyp Orlyk and, of course, Bohdan Khmelnytskyi, who was an important political figure, highly educated person, brilliant diplomatist of the 17^th century. He stood at the head of Ukrainian people during the liberation war against foreign oppression.Ukrainian literature is an inexhaustible well of our people’s poetic soul. The literary activity of Taras Shevchenko, Lesia Ukrainka, Ivan Franko, Marko Vovchok, Panas Myrnyi and others made Ukrainian literature famous all over world.The famous Ukrainian musicians are Semen Hulak-Artemovskyi, Mykola Lysenko, who was the first Ukrainian classical composer and the author of9 operas (“Christmas Night”, “The Drowned Woman”, “Natalka Poltavka”, “Taras Bulba”, “Eneida”). Lysenko treated the wide school of Ukrainian composers. Among them are Leontovych, Stepovyi, Stotsenko, Revutskyi. Ukraine gave the world many outstanding scientists. Ivan Puliui, born in Ternopil region, was the first to discover invisible X-rays some years earlier than W.Roentgen! Ihor Sikorskyi designed the first multiengine planes and some new models of helicopters. Petro Kapitsa, who comes from Volyn, was awarded the Nobel Prize, and is an outstanding scientist in the field of nuclear physics. Oleksa Bilaniuk from Transcarpathia discovered particles which moved quicker than light and were later called tahions. Rocket and space engineering in Ukraine is linked with many famous names of inventors. Serhii Koroliov, born in Zhytomyr, is an outstanding creator of the practical space engineering. Valentyn Hlushko was a general designer of rockets; Volodymyr Chelomei headed the creation of the carrier rockets. Other famous names in this branch of science are Oleksandr Zasiadko, Kostiantyn Kostiantynov, Mykola Kybalchych, Yurii Kondratiuk,who made calculations for the first manned flight to the Moon, Ihor Bohachevskyi and Mykhailo Yarymovych, who even helped Americans to solve the problems of astronaut’s flight from the Moon to the Earth.
